Chapter 2

The bell above the café door jingled, a brittle sound that usually meant tips or trouble.

Selene Aragon balanced a tray of steaming cups in her hands, weaving between crowded tables with the grace of someone who’d been doing this for far too long. The scent of bitter coffee and cheap pastries clung to her apron. Outside the wide windows, the streets of the Industrial Slums simmered under gray clouds and the metallic tang of smog.

It was just another day. Another shift. Another small fight to survive.

She placed a cappuccino in front of a weary-looking dockworker and forced a smile. “Here you go. Careful, it’s hot.”

The man grunted his thanks. Selene turned away, her smile fading the second her back was to him. By the time she reached the counter, her shoulders already ached, her throat was dry, and her mind buzzed with worries she couldn’t shove aside.

Rent was due in three days. Her grandmother’s medication had run out yesterday. And her paycheck, after deductions, wouldn’t stretch far enough.

She shoved those thoughts down. One more shift. One more day. That was how she lived now—like the city had her by the throat and she had no choice but to keep breathing in the smoke.

“Selene, table four!” her manager barked.

She turned, plastering another smile on her lips. But then the doorbell chimed again, and the air in the café seemed to change.

A hush rippled through the small space. The customers’ chatter faltered, replaced by low murmurs and the scrape of chairs. Selene frowned, following their stares.

A man had entered. Tall, sharp, and immaculately dressed, his dark suit tailored to perfection. His presence seemed to bend the space around him, commanding attention without a word. Two bodyguards lingered at the door, scanning the room with cold precision.

Selene’s pulse skipped. Men like that didn’t belong here. Not in the slums.

The man’s gaze swept across the café, unhurried, as though he was used to everything bowing before him. And then his eyes landed on her.

Selene froze.

They were the same eyes she remembered from a night ten years ago—eyes that burned even through smoke and fire.

No. It couldn’t be.

“Selene Aragon,” he said, his voice smooth and low, carrying across the café like a knife cutting silk.

The tray in her hands nearly slipped. “I—I’m sorry, do I know you?” she managed, forcing her tone to remain polite, casual.

A faint smile curved his lips. “You don’t remember me? I suppose I’ve changed.”

He stepped closer. Customers shifted uncomfortably, pretending not to stare but unable to look away. Selene’s stomach tightened. The years had carved sharpness into him—his jaw clean, his posture radiating control, his presence unsettling in its confidence.

Cyrus Navarro.

The name came to her suddenly, carried by memory like smoke creeping back under a door. A boy coughing beneath a dead tree. A promise whispered in ash.

Her blood ran cold.

“You…” Her voice caught, and she quickly looked down, fiddling with her tray. “You’re mistaken. I think you have the wrong person.”

But Cyrus only laughed softly. “No. I never forget a face. Especially not yours.”

The café door swung open again, letting in a gust of polluted air, but Selene hardly noticed. She forced her feet to move, retreating behind the counter. Her manager shot her a curious glance but said nothing, too busy eyeing Cyrus’s expensive suit.

Cyrus leaned casually against the counter, far too close. “I told you I’d find you again, didn’t I?”

Selene’s throat tightened. She remembered the words—ridiculous, childish, spoken in the middle of chaos. Words she had laughed at. Words she had let fade.

Yet here he was, as if he had been carrying them like scripture all these years.

“Mr. Navarro,” she said stiffly, her voice steady despite the tremor in her chest. “If you’re here for coffee, I’ll take your order. If not, I’m busy.”

He studied her for a long moment, as if savoring her defiance. Then he said smoothly, “An espresso. Black. Strong.”

Selene busied herself behind the machine, the hiss of steam masking the pounding of her heart. She could feel his gaze on her, heavy and unrelenting.

When she set the cup before him, his fingers brushed hers deliberately. “Still fearless,” he murmured.

She jerked her hand back. “You should drink before it gets cold.”

Cyrus chuckled, sipping leisurely. “I see life here hasn’t been kind to you. Working long hours for scraps, barely keeping afloat. You deserve more.”

Selene stiffened. “I don’t need your pity.”

“Not pity,” he corrected smoothly. “Admiration. You’ve survived. But you don’t have to struggle anymore. Not if you let me take care of you.”

The words were low, intimate, dangerous. Selene’s stomach churned.

Before she could reply, one of the bodyguards leaned down to whisper in his ear. Cyrus nodded, finishing his espresso in one swallow. He set the cup down with deliberate care and rose.

“I’ll be back,” he said simply, his eyes locking with hers. “Don’t run, Selene. You know I’ll always find you.”

As he swept out, Selene caught a murmur ripple through the café: “Isn’t he the one who’s supposed to be engaged already?” She didn’t want to know the answer.

Then he was gone, his entourage sweeping him back into the polluted streets.

The café erupted into whispers, customers buzzing about the heir of the Navarro dynasty. But Selene stood frozen, her hand trembling against the counter.

Ten years ago, she had thought his promise was nothing more than a child’s fantasy.

Now, it felt like a noose tightening around her neck.
