Chapter 3

Adrian's lead bodyguard lowered his rifle first, and the others followed rather than start a firefight inside the hotel. Dante’s security team moved in immediately, clearing the corridor and escorting Adrian and his men toward the service elevators at gunpoint. Before I could step into the private elevator waiting for Dante and me, a sharp voice cut through the heavy quiet of the hallway.

"Running away with a stray dog won't change anything, Vivienne."

Camilla stood by the lounge doors, smoothing down the hem of her satin bridesmaid dress. She had fixed her lipstick, but the smug, venomous tilt of her mouth remained unchanged.

"You really thought walking away would break his heart?" Camilla asked, stepping closer with folded arms. "Adrian never intended to end things between us. Today was just paperwork to him."

I stopped, turning to face her. "Is that what you tell yourself while wearing my bridal stockings?"

Camilla scoffed, unbothered. "He bought me the penthouse on Mercer Street last week. Exactly ten minutes from your new marital estate. The plan was always the same: you play the elegant, respectable Mrs. Romano at the charity galas, and I stay in his bed where he actually wants me."

The cruelty in her voice was casual, like she was reading items off a grocery list.

"He never loved you," Camilla added, smiling coldly. "He just needed a clean, obedient name for his family's reputation."

Before I could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. Adrian broke away from the elevator bank, shoving past one of Dante's guards.

"Camilla, shut your mouth and get out of here," Adrian snapped, his face pale and furious.

Camilla blinked, startled by his tone, before backing away into the shadows of the lounge.

Adrian turned toward me, his hands raised in surrender. For the first time in eight years, I saw desperation in his eyes.

"Vivienne, listen to me," he pleaded, stepping into my path. "We can fix this. I'll get rid of the apartment on Mercer Street today. I'll cut Camilla off completely. I won't ever see her again. Just come back to the chapel."

I looked at him, searching his face for any genuine remorse. All I saw was a man scrambling to protect his image.

"If I hadn't forgotten the stockings," I said, my voice eerily calm, "if I hadn't walked into that suite twenty minutes before the ceremony... how long were you planning to keep her in that apartment?"

Adrian hesitated. He swallowed hard, adjusting the collar of his shirt.

"Why ruin a marriage over something you never needed to know?" he asked.

The sentence hung in the air, cold and definitive.

Eight years of devotion, patience, and loyalty evaporated in a single second. His answer made it brutally clear: he didn't regret breaking my trust. He only regretted that I found out.

"Goodbye, Adrian," I said.

I turned my back on him and stepped into the elevator beside Dante. The doors slid shut, cutting off Adrian's desperate calls before he could take another step.

Twenty minutes later, the black SUV pulled into the underground garage of a fortified glass high-rise downtown.

Dante's safe house was spacious and silent, decorated in charcoal gray and polished stone. He left me in the master suite, instructing his staff to bring fresh clothes and medical supplies.

I walked into the adjoining bathroom and locked the door. Standing before the mirror, I unbuttoned Dante's black shirt and let it slide off my shoulders.

The heavy satin corset from my wedding gown had dug deep into my ribs. While Dante had cut through the front laces with his combat knife, the thick metal boning had twisted along my back during our scuffle, leaving raw, bruised scrapes against my skin. A sharp piece of broken wire was caught in the lining near my shoulder blade.

I reached behind my back, trying to pry the metal loose, but every tug pulled sharply against the inflamed skin. I winced, my fingers slipping.

The bathroom door clicked open.

Dante stepped inside, a small pair of medical shears in his hand. He had stripped off his tactical vest, wearing only a gray henley that clung to his broad chest.

"You're going to tear your skin open," he said.

"I can handle it," I said, trying to reach behind myself again.

Dante didn't argue. He simply stepped up behind me, his tall frame blocking the overhead light. His presence filled the small space, smelling of clean soap and cedarwood.

"Stay still," he commanded in a quiet murmur.

His left hand rested gently against the curve of my waist to steady me. His touch was warm and steady against my cold skin. With his right hand, he brought the shears up and snipped the trapped wire, cutting the remaining satin away with precise, clean snips.

As his knuckles grazed the bare curve of my spine, the memory of his weight against me on the vanity counter rushed back. The air between us grew thick and heavy.

My pulse jumped, thudding hard against my ribs. A quiet shiver ran down my spine, and my skin flushed beneath his gaze.

Dante pulled the last piece of metal free, setting the shears on the marble counter with a soft clink.

His eyes met mine in the mirror, his gaze dropping to the flush on my chest and the parted line of my lips. The look in his eyes told me he knew exactly what his touch was doing to me.

He didn't pull me against him. He didn't lean down to claim my mouth.

Instead, Dante removed his hand from my waist and took a full step backward, creating space between us.

"Earlier, you were angry," Dante said, his gray eyes steady and dark. "Next time, I want you because you want me."

I held my breath, the intensity of his words settling deep into my chest.

Before I could answer, a firm knock sounded on the bedroom door.

Dante turned away and walked out into the main room. I quickly pulled on a soft cashmere sweater and trousers from the dressing table, then followed him into the living area.

A man in a sharp charcoal suit stood near the fireplace, clutching a black leather briefcase.

"Don Vescari," the man said with a respectful nod, before turning his attention entirely to me. "Miss Bellini. My name is Arthur Vance. I was your late mother's private attorney."

I paused, caught off guard. "My mother passed away ten years ago."

"Yes," the lawyer replied, opening his case and retrieving a thick manila folder stamped with a heavy red wax seal. "Her instructions were absolute. This trust was placed under a strict generational lock. It could only be unsealed and delivered into your hands on the morning of your twenty-sixth birthday."

Today was my birthday. The day Adrian had chosen for our wedding so he could pretend it was a double celebration.

Arthur placed the envelope on the low glass table between us.

Dante stepped forward, glancing down at the red seal. In the center of the wax was a distinct, engraved crest: a striking double-headed serpent coiled around a silver dagger.

For the first time since I had met him, Dante's expression completely changed. His eyebrows pulled tight, his gray eyes widening with sudden recognition.

"Do you know what your mother left you?" Dante asked, his voice low and unusually sharp.

I shook my head, staring at the wax emblem. "She told me it was a small family fund for emergencies."

Dante let out a low, humorless chuckle. He reached down, picked up the sealed document, and slid it directly across the glass into my hands.

"That isn't an emergency fund, Vivienne," Dante said, looking straight at me. "That is the Bellini Continental Trust. It holds enough power to bankrupt the man you almost married."
