Chapter 5

The cab drops me at the apartment at three-fifteen. I pay. Tip. Walk through the lobby without looking at the night doorman.

The elevator is a mirror on three sides. I see myself from every angle. Hospital gown wrinkled under my coat. Hair damp from rain I don't remember walking through. Face pale under the fluorescent lights.

I look like someone who just lost something.

I step out on our floor. Unlock the door. The apartment is dark and silent.

Barrett isn't home yet. Still at the hospital. Still with her.

I don't turn on the lights. I walk to the kitchen table and sit. Pull my Moleskine from my bag. Open it to the speech I started three weeks ago.

I read it once. Then I tear the page out. Crumple it. Drop it on the floor.

I turn to a clean page.

I write for two hours. My hand moves steady across the paper. No crossing out. No hesitation. The words come like they've been waiting.

When I finish, I read it back. Once. Twice.

It's not a plea. It's not an accusation.

It's a verdict.

I close the notebook. Pick up my phone. Text Diana: *We're doing it. I need the full audio package ready for the ceremony.*

Three dots appear immediately. Then: *I'll have it by Monday. You sure?*

I type: *I'm sure.*

I set the phone down. Walk to the bedroom. Lie on top of the covers.

Somewhere across the city, Barrett is still touching her ankle.

I close my eyes.

I don't sleep.

---

Monday morning, Diana meets me at the station before my show. She's carrying a laptop and a small equipment case.

We go to the production booth. Lock the door.

She opens the laptop. Pulls up a file labeled *GM_Final_Audio.mp3*. "Two minutes, fourteen seconds. I cleaned the background noise. Boosted the dialogue. It's crystal clear."

She plugs into the studio monitors. Looks at me. "Ready?"

I nod.

She hits play.

Barrett's voice fills the room. Warm. Intimate. The voice I used to love.

*"Stuck in emergency surgery. Don't wait up."*

Then the Christmas Eve laugh. Unmistakable. Slightly too loud. Slightly too long.

Then his whisper through the office door: *"She's asleep. She goes to bed at ten like clockwork. It's honestly kind of relentless."*

Then Leilany. Breathy. Dismissive. *"She's so boring, Barrett. Honestly, I don't know how you survived seven years with that woman."*

Barrett laughing. Really laughing. *"You're not wrong. God, you're not wrong."*

The file ends.

Silence fills the booth.

Diana closes the laptop. Looks at me. "He's finished."

I don't answer. I don't need to.

She hands me the USB drive. "This is formatted to patch directly into the venue's system. I already confirmed with my tech contact. You plug it in, hit play, and it goes straight to the main speakers and the broadcast feed. They won't be able to cut it."

I slip the drive into my bag. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me." She stands. "Just promise me you'll let me watch from backstage."

"Front row," I say. "I want you to see his face."

---

The morning of the Golden Mic Awards, my phone lights up at eight-thirty.

Barrett: *Proud of you. Sorry I can't make it—procedure running long.*

I read it twice. Set the phone face-down on the vanity.

I finish my makeup. Foundation. Concealer. Contour. Lipstick the color of a line drawn in the sand.

The dress hangs on the back of the bathroom door. Black. Simple. No embellishments. It fits like armor.

I step into it. Zip it myself. Turn to the mirror.

My hair is swept back. My shoulders are bare. I look like a woman who has already won.

I pick up my clutch. Inside: the USB drive. The divorce agreement, signed by my attorney. My Moleskine.

Everything I need.

I take one last look at the apartment. Our apartment. The place I color-coded and organized and kept perfect for seven years.

I don't feel sad.

I feel nothing.

I close the door behind me.

---

The venue is the Beacon Theatre. Red carpet. Photographers. A line of black cars dropping off nominees in gowns and tailored suits.

I step out of my car. Smile for the cameras. Answer questions from a reporter with a microphone.

"Hope! How does it feel to be nominated?"

"Incredible. I'm so grateful."

"What are you most excited about tonight?"

I tilt my head. Smile wider. "The speech."

Inside, the lobby glitters. Champagne. Laughter. Colleagues I've known for years. They hug me. Congratulate me. Tell me I look stunning.

I thank them. I laugh at the right moments. I am warm and gracious and perfectly composed.

No one notices the clutch in my hand.

No one notices the way I straighten the program on the table beside me.

No one notices anything.

Backstage, I find Diana. She's wearing black too. Her face is calm. Her eyes are sharp.

"You good?" she asks.

I nod. "Everything in place?"

"Tech's ready. Your mic is live. The USB port is stage left, behind the podium. Plug it in, hit the button, and it plays."

"How long until my category?"

"Forty minutes."

I exhale. "Okay."

She squeezes my hand once. "You've got this."

I squeeze back. "I know."

The house lights flicker. The audience begins moving toward their seats.

I walk to the wings. Stand in the shadows. Watch the stage through the gap in the curtain.

The host takes the podium. The show begins.

I count the categories. One. Two. Three.

My phone buzzes.

Barrett: *Procedure's done. Grabbing dinner. Love you.*

I don't reply.

I silence my phone. Slip it back into my clutch.

On stage, the host opens an envelope. Reads a name. Someone walks up. Accepts their award. Thanks their team.

Applause.

Another category. Another winner.

I count the recessed lights above the stage. One, two, three, four.

Then I hear it.

"And now, for Best Late-Night Broadcast Personality—"

I step forward.

Diana catches my eye from across the wings. Nods once.

I nod back.

The host unfolds the card.

"Hope Allen."

The audience erupts.

I walk onto the stage.

The lights are blinding. The applause is a wave. I see faces I know. Faces I don't.

I reach the podium. Accept the award. It's heavier than I expected.

I set it down. Adjust the microphone.

The applause fades.

I pull the USB drive from my clutch.

The audience waits.

I smile.

"Thank you," I say. "I have something I'd like to share."

I plug in the drive.

I press play.
