Chapter 2

The silence stretched between us like a taut wire, ready to snap. Marcus's hands trembled as he held the deed, his eyes scanning the document over and over as if the words might rearrange themselves into something more palatable.

Brenda broke first.

"This is ridiculous!" She slammed the wooden spoon down on the counter, her accent thickening with agitation. "You are waitress! You serve coffee and pie! How you have money for house? Must be Marcus's name somewhere!"

I set down my champagne glass with deliberate care, the crystal singing against the marble. "Seven years of bank statements say otherwise."

I walked to the desk in our—my—living room, pulling out a thick manila folder I'd organized with the same methodical precision I'd used to budget every penny of Marcus's education. Bank statements, mortgage payments, investment portfolios—all bearing my name, my social security number, my signature.

"Here." I spread the papers across the coffee table like a dealer revealing a winning hand. "January 2017 through December 2023. Every deposit from the diner, every overtime shift, every tip I saved instead of spending on myself. Every loan payment I made while you studied."

Brenda's face flushed red as she scanned the documents, her earlier confidence cracking. Marcus stood frozen, still clutching the deed.

"The down payment on this house? Sixty thousand dollars from my savings account." I tapped a highlighted line. "The monthly mortgage? Automatically deducted from my checking. The car payments? Mine. The credit cards that got you through medical school? All in my name, with my credit score taking the hit every time you maxed them out."

Marcus finally found his voice, but it came out strangled. "Ivy, you're being unreasonable. We can work this out. Brenda can stay somewhere else while we—"

"While we what?" I laughed, the sound sharp enough to cut glass. "While you figure out how to have your cake and eat it too?"

His expression shifted, the mask of apologetic concern sliding away to reveal something uglier underneath. "You want to play hardball? Fine." His voice dropped to the tone he used with difficult patients. "You kick me out, I'll tell everyone what you really are. A desperate, pathetic woman who threw herself at a medical student and couldn't take a hint. I'm a doctor now, Ivy. People respect me. They'll believe me when I tell them how obsessive and unstable you've become."

The threat hung in the air between us. For a moment, I felt the old familiar twist of anxiety in my stomach—the same feeling I'd had countless times when Marcus would subtly undermine my confidence, make me question my own perceptions.

Then I smiled.

"That's funny," I said, pulling out my phone. "Because I have something that might complicate that narrative."

I scrolled through my voice memos, finding the folder I'd labeled "Insurance." Seven years of accidentally-on-purpose recording conversations. Marcus talking to his hometown friends on speakerphone while I pretended to sleep. Late-night calls with Brenda when he thought I was at work.

I pressed play.

Marcus's voice filled the room, tinny but unmistakably his: "She's so ugly, but God, she's useful. Like having my own personal ATM that also does laundry."

Brenda's laughter echoed from the speaker, followed by her voice: "And she believes you love her?"

"Please. Look at her, then look at me. I'm going to be a doctor. She serves pie for a living. The only thing I love about her is her credit score."

I stopped the recording. Marcus's face had gone white.

"There are hours of these," I said conversationally. "You telling your parents how you 'fooled a stupid American woman into paying for everything.' You and Brenda laughing about my 'pathetic attempts to be sophisticated' when I tried to learn about wine for your medical school events. You planning your 'real' wedding while I worked double shifts to pay for your board exam fees."

Brenda was backing toward the door now, her earlier bravado completely evaporated. Marcus looked like he might be sick.

"So please," I continued, "tell everyone what an obsessive, unstable woman I am. I'll be happy to provide audio evidence of what you really think about the woman who funded your entire career."

The grandfather clock in the hallway—another purchase I'd made to help Marcus feel like he was living the life he deserved—began to chime. Eleven-thirty.

"You have thirty minutes," I said. "Pack what you can carry. Everything else stays here until I decide what to do with it."

Marcus tried one more time. "Ivy, please. Be reasonable. Where are we supposed to go?"

"That sounds like a 'you' problem."

The next thirty minutes passed in a blur of frantic packing and whispered arguments between Marcus and Brenda. I sat on the couch, sipping my champagne and watching them stuff belongings into garbage bags like they were fleeing a crime scene.

At exactly midnight, the locksmith I'd called earlier rang the doorbell.

"Perfect timing," I said, opening the door for the burly man with his toolkit.

Marcus and Brenda stood in the hallway, surrounded by hastily packed bags, looking lost and disheveled. The man who'd once told me I should be grateful he'd chosen me now looked like exactly what he was—a fraud who'd been caught.

"This isn't over," he said, but his voice lacked conviction.

"Yes, it is."

I watched from the living room window as they dragged their bags down the sidewalk, Brenda on her phone trying to call an Uber while Marcus stood under the streetlight looking back at the house—my house—with something that might have been regret.

The locksmith finished his work with professional efficiency. "All set, ma'am. New keys, new deadbolt. Nobody's getting in here without your say-so."

After he left, I stood in the sudden silence of my reclaimed space. Seven years of shared memories surrounded me, but they felt different now—like artifacts from someone else's life.

My phone buzzed. Chelsea's name appeared on the screen.

"I saw your Facebook post about Marcus graduating," her voice was careful, probing. "Everything okay? You sounded weird in your message."

I looked around the apartment—the champagne stain on the rug, the scattered legal documents on the coffee table, the faint smell of Brenda's cooking still lingering in the air.

"I'm fine," I said, surprised to find I meant it. "Better than I've been in seven years."

"Are you sure? You sound different."

"I am different."

After I hung up, I scrolled through my contacts until I found a number I hadn't dialed in seven years. My finger hovered over it for a long moment before I pressed call.

The phone rang twice before a familiar voice answered, cautious but warm.

"Dad," I said, my voice steady and sure. "It's me. I'm ready to come home."
