Chapter 5

The night outside was dark and silent, but the city's distant hum did little to calm my racing heart. David and I moved quickly through narrow alleyways, keeping to the shadows. My hands clutched his arm, seeking comfort, seeking safety-but all I found was the weight of fear pressing down on me.

"Where are we going?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the pounding of my pulse.

"Somewhere safe," David replied without hesitation, his eyes scanning the streets ahead like a hawk. "Someplace he won't find us. I have a friend who can help. Someone I trust completely."

I nodded, though the pit of dread in my stomach wouldn't let me relax. Trust. That word felt fragile, almost meaningless, given everything that had happened. And yet... here I was, following David blindly through the night, hoping he knew what he was doing.

We turned a corner, and David suddenly pressed me against the wall. His hand on my back was firm, protective.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"Move quietly," he whispered. "He's close."

My eyes widened. "Close? How close?"

"Too close for comfort," David admitted, his jaw tight. "He's been following us since the apartment. I think he's testing us... seeing how far we'll go before he makes his move."

I felt my knees weaken. "David... I don't know if I can do this."

"You can," he said firmly, tilting my chin so I'd meet his gaze. "And you will. Because I'm not letting anything happen to you. Not tonight. Not ever."

The words were like a lifeline, yet the fear remained, gnawing at the edges of my resolve. I nodded, gripping his hand tightly, letting his strength anchor me as we continued down the shadowed street.

Then, from behind a darkened corner, a figure stepped forward-tall, broad-shouldered, his face obscured by the hood of his jacket. Lucas.

David immediately stepped in front of me, his stance protective, his body tense like a coiled spring.

"David," Lucas said smoothly, his voice calm but laced with menace. "You always think you can outrun the past. But the past... it always catches up."

I felt my chest tighten. "What do you want from me?" I demanded, my voice steadier than I felt.

Lucas smiled, a cold, cruel expression that made my skin crawl. "From you? Nothing... yet. From him? Everything. And I intend to get it."

David's eyes narrowed. "Step away from her."

Lucas laughed softly. "Oh, David... still so protective. Still so blind. You have no idea what you're dealing with."

"Try me," David said, his voice low and dangerous.

Lucas tilted his head, observing us like a predator. "Very well. Let's see how far your loyalty-and your love-truly go."

Before I could react, Lucas reached for something tucked into his jacket. David moved in an instant, pushing me behind him and intercepting the movement. A sharp metallic clang rang out, and my stomach dropped.

"What is he doing?" I cried, panic rising in my throat.

David didn't answer. He didn't need to. His every move screamed readiness, precision, and control. The tension in the air was unbearable, every second stretching like a wire ready to snap.

Lucas took a step back, hands raised slightly in mock surrender. "I'm not here to hurt you... yet," he said, his eyes never leaving ours. "But this is only the beginning. The game has started. And I always win."

David's hand tightened around mine, pulling me closer. "You'll leave her alone," he said, his voice dangerously calm. "Or I swear-"

Lucas smirked. "Swear all you want. You'll see. In the end... the past always wins."

And with that, he vanished into the shadows, melting into the darkness like a ghost.

I sank to my knees, my body trembling. David crouched beside me, brushing a strand of hair from my face, holding me close.

"Emma," he whispered, his voice soft but firm, "are you okay?"

I nodded, though my hands shook. "I... I think so."

He pulled me into his arms fully, holding me like he could shield me from everything-Lucas, danger, even my own fear. "We'll get through this. I promise. No one... no one is going to take you from me."

I buried my face in his chest, letting the warmth and strength of him calm the storm raging inside me. And for the first time since that night began, I felt something other than fear-a fragile, tentative hope.

But deep down, I knew the warning messages were right. The danger wasn't over. Not even close.

Lucas had made his move, and the game had only just begun.
