Chapter 4

The penthouse dining room felt like a stage set. Crystal glasses caught the light from the chandelier, casting tiny rainbows across the white tablecloth. I sat across from Alessandra, watching her hands. She wore a cream dress that made her look fragile, delicate. Breakable. But her hands moved with surgical precision as she reached for her wine.

Elliot was at the head of the table, talking about quarterly projections. He didn't see when Alessandra stood, didn't notice when she came around to my side of the table with that practiced smile.

"Cadence, darling," she said, leaning in as if to embrace me. "You look lovely tonight. That bracelet—your mother's, isn't it? It's exquisite. May I?"

I hesitated. My mother's pearls. The only thing I had left of her.

"It's fine," I said, but Alessandra was already reaching for my wrist, her fingers cool against my skin.

She unclasped it with a soft click. Held it up to the light. "Beautiful," she murmured. Then she slipped it into her palm. Closed her fingers around it.

I felt my breath catch. "Alessandra—"

"Just admiring," she said, her eyes meeting mine. In them, I saw it again. The hunger. The certainty. The promise that this was just the beginning.

She returned to her seat. The bracelet disappeared into the folds of her dress.

I sat perfectly still. Elliot was still talking. He hadn't seen. Of course he hadn't.

Two hours later, as the dessert plates were cleared, Alessandra approached me again. This time, she pressed the bracelet into my hand with a smile.

"I've been meaning to return this," she said loudly enough for Elliot to hear. "I found it on the floor near your chair. You must be so careful with your things."

Elliot looked up. "What happened?"

"Oh, nothing," Alessandra said, her voice honey-sweet. "Just a small mix-up. All resolved now."

I clasped the bracelet back onto my wrist. My hands were steady. My voice was calm. "Thank you."

But inside, something had crystallized. She could take anything from me. At any time. And Elliot would never see it happening.

That night, after they left, I opened my laptop. Started a new folder. Began photographing every document I could find. Every transaction. Every piece of evidence.

I was building a file. A safety net. A weapon.

The Plaza's rooftop terrace glittered like a jewelry box. Fairy lights strung overhead. Manhattan's skyline providing a backdrop that cost more than most people's houses. I stood near the edge, watching the crowd.

Two hundred guests. Socialites. Business titans. The kind of people who could end careers with a whispered word. Alessandra had outdone herself.

She floated through the crowd in a white dress, touching arms, pressing cheeks, playing the perfect hostess. Her recovery from her "collapse" had been miraculous. Overnight, apparently.

I wore black. Simple. Severe. I'd left my hair down to hide the hollowness in my cheeks. The miscarriage had taken more than just my baby.

Diana was beside me, her hand steady on my elbow. "You don't have to do this," she whispered. "We can leave."

"No," I said. "I need to see what she's planning."

Alessandra made her way toward us. The crowd parted like water. She smiled when she saw me—that same empty smile.

"Cadence," she said, reaching for my hands. "You came. I'm so pleased."

I let her take my hands. Let her pull me into an embrace. Felt her fingers brush my wrist.

The bracelet was gone.

I stepped back. Looked down. "My bracelet—"

"Oh dear," Alessandra said, her voice rising just enough to draw attention. "Is it missing? When did you last have it?"

She turned to the crowd. "Everyone, please. Has anyone seen a pearl bracelet? Cadence has lost hers. It belonged to her mother. It's very sentimental."

People murmured. Looked around. Concerned faces. Helpful voices.

Then Alessandra gasped. Pointed to the decorative reflecting pool that ran along one side of the terrace. "There! Is that it? In the water?"

I looked. Saw the pearls glinting under the surface of the water. The pool was shallow, decorative. But it was still water. Still glass. Still a trap.

"Oh no," Alessandra said, her hand over her mouth. "How did it get there? Did you fall? Did someone bump you?"

Before I could speak, she turned to the crowd again. "Someone must have seen something. Did anyone notice? Did anyone see what happened?"

A woman I didn't know stepped forward. "I saw her," she said, pointing at me. "She was standing here, and she seemed upset. Then she stumbled. I thought she was going to fall in."

Another voice joined in. "I saw it too. She was unsteady. She bumped the edge of the pool. Maybe that's when the bracelet fell off."

Lies. All of them. But delivered with such conviction, such practiced sincerity, that the crowd began to murmur.

Then came the second act.

Alessandra moved toward the champagne tower set up near the center of the terrace. Diana was standing beside it, getting drinks.

I saw it happen in slow motion. Alessandra's hip brushed the table. Her hand "slipped." The tower wobbled.

Champagne cascaded down. Glass shattered. Diana screamed as the tower collapsed, drenching her in expensive champagne and leaving shards of glass scattered across the marble.

"Oh my God!" Alessandra cried. "What happened? Did someone push it? Did someone bump the table?"

She looked at me. The crowd looked at me.

"I saw her," a man's voice said. "She was standing near it. She must have bumped it when she turned."

"She was upset," another voice added. "Everyone saw how she was acting."

Diana stood there, dripping, surrounded by broken glass. Her eyes found mine. She knew. She knew this was orchestrated.

But the crowd didn't. The crowd saw what Alessandra wanted them to see: a jealous, unstable woman causing chaos.

And then Elliot arrived.
