Chapter 5

The phone rang before I even had time to steady my breathing.

“Amara.” Marcus’s voice came through sharp, controlled—like tempered steel. “You swore you’d die for him. You cut us off for him. You handed him your entire life on a silver plate. And now you’re calling me? After Mom and Dad are gone? Seriously?”

I swallowed hard. “He forced me to terminate my pregnancy,” I said, forcing the words out. “He shoved me when I cried. He already signed the divorce, but he still keeps me like I belong to him. I don’t want freedom anymore… I want to disappear. I want him to lose me the way I lost my child.”

Silence stretched.

Then Marcus’s tone changed—colder, sharper. “Give me details. Location. Timing. I’ll take care of everything.”

“I know you’re angry at me,” I whispered. “I know I chose him over all of you. But I need to vanish before he decides how my story ends.”

A pause. Then the man who built operations from ruins and erased people from systems spoke with final certainty.

“Tomorrow at sunrise. You’re gone. Records, traces, identity—everything wiped. You won’t exist on paper anymore. You’ll be nothing but a ghost with a new heartbeat. And Amara…”

“Yes?” I breathed.

“This isn’t kindness. This is punishment—for him. He wanted you erased… now he gets to live with a version he can never find.”

Then the line went dead.

**

The next morning…

A taxi was already waiting outside. Nothing flashy, nothing noticeable—just a dark sedan with tinted glass and a driver who gave a single nod when I stepped out.

I left the house.

I slid into the backseat. My bandaged knees burned, but I didn’t let it show on my face.

“Ms. Carrington,” the driver acknowledged.

“Yes,” I answered.

“All systems are clear. Marcus has blacked out every signal within a ten-kilometer radius. Once we reach Marker Seventeen, the operation begins.”

I leaned my head against the window, cold glass pressing against my skin. The city drifted behind us like something already erasing itself from memory.

The road up the mountain was steep, lined with dense trees and air that tasted faintly metallic. Halfway up, the driver spoke again.

“The substitute is already in place. Female body, same height, matching proportions. Medical identifiers were prepared in advance.”

His tone never changed. “There will be an explosion. Controlled. Not suspicious. Just tragic enough to believe.”

I said nothing.

“Your belongings were replicated,” he continued. “Clothes, watch, crutches, even your perfume on the collar. Everything arranged. Your name engraved. Enough evidence for certainty. Enough for mourning.”

I let out a slow breath. “Marcus really planned everything.”

“He did,” the driver replied. “He said you don’t need comfort. Only closure.”

He glanced at me through the mirror—no emotion, just assessment.

“You stopped existing long before today, Ms. Carrington.”

Maybe he was right. Something in me had already died the moment Rafael chose someone else over me. Everything after that was just continuation, not life.

The trees thickened. Marker Seventeen appeared—faded paint on stone.

“Now,” he said.

The vehicle turned off-road into a narrow cut in the cliffside. A second identical car waited ahead, already staged. Same model. Same plates. Same dust layer on the windshield.

I stepped out. Pine and gasoline hung in the air.

“You know the procedure,” the driver said.

I nodded once. “Make it believable.”

“It already is.”

He led me to the second car. The silence inside it felt unfamiliar—almost clean.

“This is where you leave the version of yourself that begged,” he said simply.

“And the one that loved,” I added.

He closed the door.

The first car pulled away, returning to the main road.

I watched from the trees.

One minute. Then another.

Then the mountain exploded.

Fire tore upward, swallowing the curve of the road. Heat rolled through the forest like a living wave. Metal screamed. Debris scattered into the air. Somewhere below, a shepherd’s radio crackled in panic.

My watch. My bag. My crutches. My identification.

All placed perfectly in the wreckage.

The name remained visible through ash.

Amara Carrington.

Sirens began echoing through the valley.

Not rescue calls.

Recovery calls.

I leaned against the tree, knees aching, lungs steady.

For the first time since Rafael, since the salt, since everything he took and everything he destroyed, I wasn’t being hunted.

I wasn’t surviving.

I was gone.

Not lost.

Erased.

Rafael's POV

My phone rang while I was stirring honey into Nerissa’s tea.

I didn’t even look at the screen.

“What.”

The voice on the other end shook. “Sir… it’s Ms. Amara. There was a crash on the eastern mountain road. The car exploded on impact. We recovered a body. Identification matches her. The watch too.”

My hand stopped.

“What are you saying?”

A pause. Then, “It’s already on the news. Witnesses confirmed the fire. They’re calling it Mrs. Carrington.”

I stared forward, blank.

Then heat snapped through me.

“Don’t feed me that bullshit,” I snarled. “She’s not dead.”

“Sir… it’s everywhere,” he whispered. “Reporters are already on-site.”

Before I could respond, Nerissa’s voice drifted in—soft, trembling, perfectly timed.

“Stef… my chest hurts again. Can you come here?”

I ended the call.

No instructions. No acknowledgment.

I went to her.

I knelt beside her bed like I always did, adjusting her blanket, smoothing her hair as if nothing in my world had just cracked open.

“You’re fine,” I said quietly. “Just breathe.”

She clutched my wrist weakly. “Don’t leave me like this… I get scared.”

“I’m here,” I murmured, pressing a kiss to her knuckles.

Then the door slammed open.

My mother rushed in, pale, shaking, phone in her hand like it was a death sentence.

“She’s gone!” she gasped. “Amara—she died in a fire on the ridge! They’re showing it live!”

She shoved the phone into my chest.

On screen: burning wreckage, twisted metal, medics pulling out remains.

Then the headline voice:

“Confirming Amara Carrington, wife of Rafael Carrington, killed in a fatal explosion…”

I didn’t hear the rest.

The phone fell.

I stood.

And walked out.

“Prepare the convoy,” I said flatly. “Full unit. Now.”

A voice crackled through comms. “Sir… Nerissa—”

“She can survive without me,” I cut in. “Move.”

No one questioned me after that.

---

The crash site looked like a burning grave pretending to still be alive. Smoke curled through the trees, thick and slow.

Everything stopped when I arrived.

Fire crews stepped back. Cameras were blocked. Drones forced down. My men cleared the perimeter.

I walked through ash and shattered glass until I reached the center.

A medic approached cautiously. “We recovered what we could.”

He handed me a sealed tray.

Her watch.

Still intact. Still engraved.

Alongside a half-burned wallet—her name barely surviving the fire.

Silence swallowed everything.

Then my knees hit the ground as the body bag was zipped behind me.

“No…” I choked. “No. No—”
