Chapter 1

The pregnancy test sat on the bathroom counter, two pink lines sharp against white plastic. Six weeks. I pressed my palm against my stomach, feeling nothing yet but knowing everything had changed. A baby. Our baby. Mine and Wyatt's.

I spent the afternoon at the clinic on Madison Avenue, the one with the discreet entrance and waiting room that smelled like lavender. Dr. Chen confirmed what I already knew, printed out the ultrasound image—a tiny blur that would become a person—and sent me home with prenatal vitamins and a due date in late spring.

The apartment felt too quiet when I returned. I set the ultrasound photo on the kitchen island and started dinner, something special. Herb-crusted salmon, roasted vegetables, the good wine for him. Sparkling water for me now. I imagined his face when I told him. The way his eyes would light up, how he'd pull me close and press his forehead to mine like he used to when we first got married.

By eight o'clock, the salmon had gone cold. I covered it with foil and checked my phone. No messages. Wyatt's late nights at the office had become routine over the past year, but tonight felt different. Tonight, I had news that couldn't wait.

I opened Instagram to distract myself. Scrolled past vacation photos and food pics, double-tapped a friend's engagement announcement. Then the algorithm served me something new: a suggested account called "K&W's Secret Garden." The profile picture was a silhouette against a sunset, deliberately obscured.

The latest post stopped my breath.

An ultrasound image. Same grainy black-and-white quality as mine. Same measurements in the corner—6 weeks, 2 days. Same date stamp. Same clinic name printed at the bottom: Madison Avenue Women's Health.

The caption read: *Our little miracle. Finally, W and I are starting our family.*

My fingers went numb. I stared at the screen until the image blurred, then refocused, then blurred again. The phone nearly slipped from my hand. I caught it, thumb hovering over the profile, but my hand was shaking too hard to tap.

The front door opened. Wyatt's keys jangled as he dropped them in the bowl by the entrance.

"Miriam?" His voice carried that edge of exhaustion he always wore lately. "You still up?"

I locked my phone and set it face-down on the counter. "In here."

He appeared in the kitchen doorway, tie loosened, jacket slung over one arm. And there it was—that scent. Vanilla and sandalwood, clinging to his collar. Not my perfume. I wore bergamot and jasmine. But I knew that scent. I'd smelled it a hundred times at family dinners, holiday gatherings, Sunday brunches.

Kylee's signature fragrance.

"Long day," Wyatt said, not quite meeting my eyes. He moved past me to the fridge, grabbed a beer. "What's all this?"

I looked at the covered dishes, the unlit candles, the sparkling water in a wine glass. "I wanted to talk."

"Can it wait? I'm beat." He twisted the cap off his beer, took a long drink. "Big presentation tomorrow."

"Sure." The word came out flat. "Tomorrow."

He kissed my forehead—a reflex, nothing more—and disappeared down the hallway toward our bedroom. I stood in the kitchen, surrounded by cold food and unspoken news, my phone burning a hole in my peripheral vision.

I waited until midnight. Until his breathing went deep and even beside me in the dark. Then I heard it—the soft vibration of his phone on the nightstand, the shuffle of sheets as he reached for it. The bathroom light clicked on, a thin line of gold beneath the door.

I counted to thirty. Slipped out of bed. The hardwood was cold under my bare feet as I crept down the hallway.

His voice filtered through the bathroom door, barely a whisper. "I know, Ky. I love you too."

I pressed my spine against the wall, my heart a fist in my throat.

"Just give me a little more time to tell her. We have to be careful with the baby coming."

The baby. Not my baby. Not our baby. The baby from the ultrasound on Instagram. The baby that shared my due date, my clinic, my husband.

I walked back to the bedroom on autopilot. Grabbed my phone. Locked myself in the guest bathroom at the far end of the apartment where he wouldn't hear.

My hands steadied as I opened Instagram again. This time, I didn't hesitate. I tapped the profile. Scrolled through posts. Cryptic captions about "stolen moments" and "love in the shadows." A photo from two years ago—a hotel room with distinctive geometric wallpaper. I zoomed in, my mind cataloging details. I'd seen that wallpaper before. In a photo Wyatt had sent me from his Chicago business trip. "Missing you," he'd texted. "Can't wait to be home."

The bio had a link. "The Sun in the Shadows." I clicked it.

A blog. Years of entries. I scrolled to the oldest post, dated ten years ago. The month after our wedding.

*He married her today. I watched from the back row, invisible as always. But tonight, he's with me. He'll always come back to me. She's just the placeholder. The acceptable choice. I'm the one he loves.*

I read until dawn broke through the bathroom window. Read until I knew every detail of my husband's other life. Every lie. Every trip. Every moment he'd chosen her while I waited at home, trusting and oblivious.

The placeholder wife.

I pressed my hand to my stomach, where our baby—my baby—was growing. And I made a decision.
