Chapter 1

At a banquet, Winona Quinton’s stocking got snagged on something.

I moved to take her to the dressing room, only to see her male assistant reaching under her skirt.

I grabbed his wrist. “What does my wife’s torn stocking have to do with you?”

However, Winona shoved me away. “Stop overreacting,” she snapped. “Corey has even changed my underwear before. It’s just stockings.”

That night, news of the attentive assistant caring for his female CEO went viral.

By the end of the event, I was gone, leaving my resignation letter with the assistant.

Upon receiving it, Winona threw it aside. “Jared Strathmore has gone too far. Get him here immediately!”

I returned—this time with freshly drafted divorce papers in hand.

Winona Quinton frowned at the divorce papers in my hand. She seized them and threw them straight at my face.

“What do you think you’re doing?” she snapped. “I was just covering for him. You humiliated him in public, and it reflects on me too. How am I supposed to show my face in the industry after this?”

I stared at her in disappointment. “Marry him, then. I’ll step aside so you can spend your life covering for him.”

Winona rolled her eyes. “You’re only great at being jealous. How many times must I repeat myself? Nothing’s going on between us!”

I took a deep breath. “Winona, there’s no point explaining yourself any further. He’s just an incompetent intern, yet you insisted on hiring him despite my objections. On my birthday, you posted photos of a candlelight dinner with him on social media, and at every gala, he’s always your date. I’ve had enough. Let’s get a divorce.”

Winona froze momentarily before she turned and told Corey Marsh to leave.

Corey teared up. “Winona, I—”

Before he could finish, Winona cut him off sharply. “Get out!”

Corey finally left, albeit reluctantly.

After closing the door, Winona lifted her dress slightly, sat on my lap, and wrapped her arms around me.

“Honey, don’t be jealous. Since you’ve made it clear to me that you don’t like any of those things, I’ll do as you say. I’ll cut contact with him and make it up to you for your birthday. From now on, you’ll be my only date at events, all right? Honey, you have to believe me. My heart is yours.”

I pushed her off me and said curtly, “I don’t need it.”

“But—”

“I said I don’t need it. What part of that is unclear?”

I stood up and met her gaze. “Ever since he came into the picture, things between us have only gone downhill. Have you ever stood on my side?”

Winona rushed to explain herself. “There’s really nothing between us. It’s you who can’t stop doubting…”

I flung the divorce papers at her face. “Fine, let’s get divorced. I’ll have zero reasons left for any doubts.”

Winona stiffened, puzzled as to why I had escalated things this far.
