Chapter 2

I killed three people.

I cruelly killed my own parents.

I received a bit of special treatment for my evil acts.

For example, I spent less time waiting. They brought me straight into the interrogation room.

The interrogation room door closed, and a searing white light from above dazzled my eyes.

I shivered slightly, and the officer sitting opposite me keenly sensed the change in my movements.

“Are you afraid of the light?”

I tried my best to control my shaking body and nodded slowly.

When Officer Ryan Zahn saw that, he continued to question me.

“Why is that?

“What did you experience in the past?”

When I heard those questions, I schooled my expression and tried for a casual disposition.

“I’m a psychiatric patient. I’ll be afraid of what I want. I don’t need to give you a reason.”

Ryan’s expression darkened again. He slammed his fist on the desk.

“Just answer the questions I ask. Why did you kill your parents and sister?

“Everyone says that your parents treated you like a princess. They cherished you. The news about them transferring the family enterprise to you just came out. Why did you repay kindness with ingratitude?”

For some reason, when I saw his furious expression, happiness bubbled up inside of me.

Ryan looked at the smile playing on my lips. He clenched his fists again.

“Mia, tell me. Have you really recovered from the mental illness you were diagnosed with?”

They discharged me. Did that not mean I had already recovered?

I was amused by his stupid question. A cold laugh escaped me.

“Ryan, if you ask a psychiatric patient whether she’s sick, she’ll obviously tell you she isn’t.”

Ryan’s face kept twitching, and he silently left in the end.

A while later, my psychiatrist came to see me.

I tried my best to control my expression, but under the desk, my legs still trembled uncontrollably.

Ryan immediately sensed that something was off about me. He ended the meeting after glancing at me.

After Ryan sent the doctor away, he went back to the interrogation room. This time, he looked much calmer.

The first question he asked was, “You were sent to the mental hospital when you were eight years old.

“Mia, this means that you’ve lived in the mental hospital for eighteen years.

“During this period, did your parents visit you? While you were there, were you aware that you had a younger sister?”

I shook my head. I tried to recall my days in the mental hospital, then answered him.

“Yes, they visited me once a month.

“Each time, they would bring me new clothes, snacks, and toys. If I casually mentioned certain fruits, they would appear on a beautiful fruit plate that would be promptly delivered to me.

“Regarding my sister, of course, I knew about her.

“At first, it was just the two of them who came to visit me. Then, they started bringing my sister along too.

“Ryan, you don’t need to beat around the bush. Didn’t you just want to ask if I killed my family because I only found out about my sister after getting discharged? You think I was envious that she got to live with my parents, don’t you?

“No, I was never envious of her because she also treated me very well.

“She cared more about me than I did. She never let me do anything, and she pampered me like I was a god.

“We never fought for our parents’ love. She was also completely aware of the transfer of ownership of Schmidt Corporation to me.”

When Ryan heard my explanation, he gasped. He could not help but clench his fists again. Then, he relaxed his hands once more.

After a long while, he looked up and met my eyes.

“The psychiatrist said you were well enough to be discharged. You met the criteria.

“Mia, if what he said is true, then you committed murder intentionally. Your struggle with mental health can’t be used as an excuse.

“Can you tell me why you wanted to kill the family who loved you on your birthday?”
