Chapter 3

“I want to file for divorce. Immediately.”

The words hung in the silence between me and my lawyer, a silence that felt heavier than the past twenty-five years of my life.

“Mrs. Villaruel…” he said, his voice cautious, gentle like he was speaking to a fragile child. “Are you absolutely sure? Twenty-five years of marriage isn’t something you walk away from overnight.”

I closed my eyes and saw it all. Johann’s hand ripping that necklace from my throat, the blood trickling down my neck, Kate’s syrupy lies, Samuel’s hateful eyes. The picture of my family at the amusement park without me. And that envelope, mocking me with its promise of cherry blossoms I’d never see.

“Yes,” I said, my voice steady this time. “Draft the papers. Send them to me. I’ll make sure he signs.”

“Of course,” he said softly. “I’ll get everything ready for you.”

When the call ended, the quiet in the house felt alive — pressing against my ears, filling every corner with old echoes. I stood in the living room, the walls closing in, then went to the dusty cabinet where I’d hidden every photo album, every faded wedding picture, every birthday card and anniversary note I’d clung to like a fool.

I brought them all outside to the backyard.

The wind was cold against my face as I knelt in front of the metal bin. One by one, I fed the memories to the flames — a picture of our wedding day, my veil tucked under Johann’s chin while he grinned at Kate standing off to the side. A photo of Samuel as a baby in my arms, before his father and Kate’s poison turned him against me. Our first Christmas tree. The letter where Johann promised we’d see the cherry blossoms in Japan someday — someday.

My hands shook, but I didn’t stop. The fire crackled, devouring every lie I’d been told to believe.

Twenty-five years ago, I’d thought I was marrying my chance at happiness. Kate had gone abroad back then — off to pursue her dreams, leaving Johann heartbroken, abandoned. I was there to pick up the pieces. He turned to me, the shy half-sister always trailing behind Kate’s shine.

When he asked me to marry him, I thought I was his comfort, his peace. Maybe even his love.

And for ten years, I almost believed it. Until Kate returned — and with her, the slow rot I refused to see. Their secret looks, their private jokes. The business trips she just had to go on with him. The whispers that always stopped when I entered the room.

I was so desperate to keep what I had that I turned my head the other way even when Samuel started looking at me like I was the problem. Like I was the reason his father didn’t love us the way he used to.

A tear slipped down my cheek, hissing as it hit the flames. “No more,” I whispered.

I was still watching the last photos curl and blacken when I heard the front door open, the voices cutting through the calm.

Laughter. The clatter of shopping bags. Kate’s bright, false giggle. Samuel’s low grumble about traffic. And Johann’s voice, smug as ever.

When I stepped inside, I could still feel the heat of the fire on my skin.

Johann frowned the moment he saw the faint trail of smoke through the back door. “What the hell are you burning?”

I met his eyes without blinking. “Old memories.”

Kate raised an eyebrow, setting down her shopping bag. “Memories? Oh, Samantha, are you okay? You look pale. You should eat something.” She pulled a plastic container from her bag and held it out like an offering. “I brought you food.”

I peeked inside — stale rice, leftover bones, scraps that looked more fit for a stray dog than a wife.

I forced a smile. “It’s fine. No need.”

Samuel sneered. “Why are you so rude, Mom? Aunt Kate brought you that food because she cares. You can’t even say thank you?”

My fingers curled around the edge of the container. “Thank you,” I murmured.

Johann snorted. “Good girl. That’s the only thing you’re good for anyway, taking our scraps.”

Then he noticed the empty package on the side table. His eyes narrowed. “Did you open this?”

I swallowed. “I thought… it was for me. It had my name.”

He ripped the paper from my hands. “You thought? I didn’t tell you to touch this. This was for our trip. Our trip to Japan.”

“Can I come?” The question slipped out before I could stop it, the last flicker of that foolish girl who still believed cherry blossoms might save her.

Kate’s laugh was sharp and sweet. “Oh, that was actually from me. I forgot to change the name. I guess you could come… but you’d have to pay for your ticket and hotel, of course. This is mostly a business trip.”

Johann barked out a laugh. “As if she can afford that. She doesn’t have her own money. She’s been rotting here for years, living off us.”

Samuel rolled his eyes. “Just stay here, Mom. Guard the house. You don’t know anything about business, you’d just get in the way.”

Kate tilted her head, eyes sparkling. “Sorry, Samantha. They’re right. I’ll buy you a souvenir, okay?”

I didn’t argue. I didn’t cry. I just clutched the plastic container tighter, the cold rice digging into my palm.

“Never mind,” I said softly. “I’ll… go pack your things.”

I turned away before they could see my face crack.

In my room, I picked up my phone and scrolled to the name I’d never let fade. The only person left who would never forget me, who never replaced me, even when I replaced myself.

When he answered, I didn’t hide the way my voice trembled.

“Dad… it’s me.”

“Samantha? Is everything okay?”

“No,” I whispered. “I’m going to divorce Johann. I don’t want to be here anymore. I want to come home. Will you… will you take me home?”

A pause — the soft inhale of a father who still saw his daughter, even after all these years.

“Of course I will,” he said. “Come home, darling. We’ll go wherever you want.”

A tear rolled down my cheek but this time, it didn’t feel like grief. “I want to see the cherry blossoms, Dad. I still do. Please… pick me up.”
