Chapter 1

The gavel fell at Regalia Auction House in Harbor City, and my late mother's Jeweled Tiara had just been driven to an absurd one billion dollars.

The ones bidding it up were my fiancé, Alex Harding, and the three childhood friends who'd sworn to protect me since we were kids.

I stared at the tiara on the stage. It was the only proof of my rightful bloodline in the Henson family.

Alex had his arm around Letitia Henson's waist. In full view of every guest in the room, he raised his paddle:“Lettie says her gown tonight is too plain and she needs an accessory. One point one billion.”

Laughter rippled through the crowd. Mocking laughter, aimed at me, the true heiress who'd only been brought home three years ago and couldn't even hold on to her own mother's heirloom.

“Give it up, Jocelyn Henson. You're never going to beat Letitia.” The three of them sneered at me from across the floor.

The entire ballroom was watching me like I was the evening's entertainment. But my father, Jerome Henson, had gone pale with fury.

None of them knew the Henson family had eyes on every move I made tonight.

If I touched my trust fund for this tiara, or if I got on my knees and begged Alex for money, I would lose my right to inherit Henson Group. Permanently.

I looked at those four men, each one throwing away a fortune for Letitia, and set down my bidding paddle.

That tiara represented the seat of the Henson matriarch.

——

I'd been lost to the family for twenty-two years. They only found me and brought me home three years ago.

Tonight was the first time I'd ever formally represented the Henson family at a charity gala auction. My grandfather's instructions had been clear: bring back my mother's heirloom.

Alex knew exactly what that tiara meant to me.

And he still raised his paddle. His eyes never once drifted in my direction.

The lights in the ballroom were blinding.

I sat in my bidding seat and watched Alex take the tiara from the presenter's hands, watched him place it in Letitia's hair with his own fingers, and my nails dug so deep into my palms I nearly broke the skin.

Camera flashes erupted across the room.

The whispers bored into my ears:

“Mr. Harding's making it crystal clear he's backing the future Mrs. Harding. Doesn't matter if she's the fake heiress. As long as he wants her, she's the real deal.”

“That so-called legitimate Miss Henson is pitiful, honestly. Came back thinking a name would be enough, and ended up losing the man and the heirloom in one night.”

Alex was leaning down, smoothing a strand of hair from Letitia's temple. His gaze was soft, indulgent, impossibly patient.

I'd known him for three years. The only side he'd ever shown me was cold restraint.

In his eyes, I was nothing but a schemer who'd clawed her way into a wealthy family. My pain, my tears, all of it was just leverage I used to get what I wanted.

Marlene Henson walked up to me, champagne in hand.

She was my aunt. A flock of socialites trailed behind her.

“Jocelyn, since Mr. Harding clearly doesn't care about you, what are you still doing sitting here?”

“If you ask me, some people just need to know their place. You can stick feathers on a stray bird, but it's never going to pass for a phoenix.”

“Letitia grew up in this family. She's the blessed one. The moment you showed up trying to push her out, even God decided to step in and send Mr. Harding right back to her side.”

Every word out of Marlene's mouth landed like a slap. The champagne glass in my hand trembled.

Before the auction started, Alex had promised me in the private lounge.

He said he would win the tiara for me, a gift for our third engagement anniversary.

I believed him.

To hold up my end, I'd turned down partnership offers from several other families.

But one minute before the tiara went on stage, Letitia had leaned into his ear and cried.

And just like that, Alex changed his mind.

He didn't just refuse to help me. He became the sharpest blade in Letitia's hand.

He knew about the family's internal review.

If I lost my composure tonight, or failed to secure the heirloom, the right to inherit Henson Group would tilt toward Letitia.

He wasn't ignorant of the stakes. He simply decided I was strong enough that I didn't need those shares.
