I Found My Husband’s Affair Through My Tesla Chapter 1
The Tesla looked perfect in the morning sun. White paint, chrome trim, that clean electric-car smell still inside. I ran my hand along the hood and felt proud. Leon gave me this. A push present, he called it. Forty-five thousand dollars of thoughtfulness.
We were at brunch in West Hollywood. Outdoor table, mimosas for everyone except me—sparkling water with lime for the pregnant lady. My friends clustered around, phones out, taking pictures. The car sat in the parking lot behind us, gleaming.
"Shelby, oh my God," said Marissa, leaning back in her chair to get a better angle. "Leon is literally the gold standard."
I smiled. My hand rested on my belly. Six months along. The baby kicked, and I pressed back gently. "He surprised me yesterday. I cried."
"Of course you did," Lacey said. She sat across from me, sunglasses pushed up on her head, coffee cup halfway to her lips. "It's the sweetest thing I've ever seen."
Lacey Fox. My best friend since freshman year at NYU. My maid of honor. The person who knew me better than anyone except Leon. She smiled at me, warm and easy, and I smiled back.
"Let's go look at it up close," Marissa said, already standing.
We all got up and walked to the parking lot. I pulled the key fob from my purse and pressed the button. The Tesla chirped. Lights flashed. Everyone oohed.
"Can we sit inside?" asked Jen.
"Of course," I said.
I opened the driver's door and slid in. The seat adjusted automatically to my profile. Leon had programmed it for me. I touched the screen, and it lit up with my name: *Shelby's Tesla*. My chest felt warm.
Lacey walked around to the driver's side. "Let me see the door handle thing. I heard they're so cool."
She reached out and pressed her thumb against the handle.
The car chirped.
The door unlocked.
I blinked.
Lacey pulled her hand back and laughed. "Wait, what?"
Marissa leaned in. "Did you just unlock it?"
"I think so?" Lacey pressed her thumb against the handle again. Another chirp. Another unlock. She looked at me, eyebrows raised. "That's so weird."
I stared at her hand. My mouth opened, but no words came out.
"Must be a glitch," Jen said. She was already pulling out her phone to google it. "I read somewhere that Teslas have fingerprint bugs sometimes."
Lacey shrugged and smiled. "Technology, right?"
I forced a laugh. It sounded thin in my ears. "Yeah. Crazy."
But I kept looking at Lacey's hand. At her thumb. At the way she'd pressed it so casually, like she'd done it before.
The table moved on. Someone made a joke about Lacey stealing my car. Everyone laughed. I laughed too. But the sound felt far away.
I texted Leon right there in the parking lot, standing beside the car while my friends went back to finish brunch.
*Hey babe, something weird just happened. Lacey's fingerprint unlocked the car. Is that normal?*
He replied in less than a minute.
*LOL what? No that's definitely a software glitch. I'll call the dealership Monday. Don't worry about it.*
I read the text twice. Then a third time. His answer was smooth. Confident. Easy.
Too easy.
I walked back to the table and sat down. Lacey was talking about a work thing. Marissa was scrolling through the photos she'd taken. Jen was asking me about the nursery. I answered. I smiled. I sipped my sparkling water.
But something inside me had cracked.
That night, Leon came home late. He kissed the top of my head and said he'd been at the office. He smelled like cologne and mint gum. He asked how brunch was. I said it was great. I showed him pictures of the car. He smiled and said he was glad I loved it.
He went to take a shower.
I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at my phone.
The Tesla app was still installed. Leon had set it up for me yesterday, logged into my account, showed me how to check the battery and climate settings. I opened it now.
The car's profile loaded. Battery at 78%. Parked in our driveway. I scrolled down.
There was a tab labeled *Trips*.
I tapped it.
A map bloomed across the screen. Blue lines tracing routes across the city. I zoomed in. My hands were shaking.
Last Tuesday. 11:47 p.m. The car had driven from our house to an address in West Hollywood. I recognized it immediately. Lacey's apartment building. The car stayed there until 1:32 a.m.
Last Thursday. 10:15 p.m. Same route. Stayed until 2:04 a.m.
Last Saturday. 9:50 p.m. Same route. Stayed until 1:18 a.m.
I scrolled back further. Weeks of trips. Dozens of them. All to the same address.
All on nights Leon said he was working late.
I used both thumbs to screenshot every single one. My hands shook so hard I almost dropped the phone.
The shower turned off in the bathroom.
I closed the app. I set the phone face-down on the nightstand. I lay back against the pillows and stared at the ceiling.
Leon came out in a towel, hair damp, smiling. "You okay, babe?"
"Yeah," I said. My voice sounded normal. "Just tired."
"Get some rest." He kissed my forehead. "Love you."
"Love you too."
He got into bed beside me and turned off the light.
I lay there in the dark. The baby kicked. I pressed my hand against my belly and felt the small, insistent push of a foot.
I didn't sleep.
Around 3 a.m., I got up and walked to the nursery. The crib was half-assembled in the corner. We'd started putting it together last weekend. Leon had laughed when he couldn't figure out the instructions. I'd held the pieces while he used the screwdriver.
I sat down in the rocking chair we'd picked out together. White wood, soft gray cushion. I rocked slowly back and forth.
The baby kicked again.
I thought about Lacey's thumb on the car door. The chirp. The click.
I thought about the map on my phone. All those blue lines leading to her building.
I thought about Leon's text. *Don't worry about it.*
I sat there until the sky turned gray, and I understood, with a cold and terrible clarity, that my entire life had been built on a lie.
