Chapter 4

Ashenveil territory is colder than Silverfang. The lodge they assign me sits at the edge of the forest, small and functional, with a fireplace that smokes when the wind shifts. I arrive with two bags and a stack of alliance files thick enough to keep me occupied for months.

That's the plan. Work. Distance. Silence.

For two weeks, it works.

I draft territorial agreements. Review trade terms. Mediate a boundary dispute between two minor packs whose Alphas can't stand to be in the same room. The problems have solutions. I find them. My wolf stays quiet—so quiet I start to believe the flicker in Silverfang was nothing. A trick of exhausted nerves and too much alcohol. A moment that meant nothing because I decided it meant nothing.

Then, on a Tuesday evening when the rain is coming down hard enough to rattle the lodge windows, someone knocks on my door.

I'm not expecting anyone. Ashenveil's liaison dropped off supply updates yesterday. The next diplomatic session isn't until Friday.

I open the door.

Wyatt stands on the threshold, soaked through. Rain drips from his hair onto his jacket. In his hands, he holds a small paper bag from the tea shop two towns over—the one that imports the specific black blend I prefer, the one I never told him about.

For a long moment, neither of us speaks.

His scent hits me first. Cedar and rain-soaked earth, amplified by the actual rain, filling the small entryway like warm weather. My chest tightens. Deep inside, behind walls I thought I'd reinforced, something stirs. Wakes. Pays attention.

"Hi," he says quietly.

I stare at him. At the tea. At the rain running down his face. "What are you doing here?"

"Duskhollow housing crisis." His voice is apologetic, gentle, the same register he used when he first sat across from me in Silverfang's conference room. "Structural damage from the storm last week. We need a staging point for relief coordination. Ashenveil's the most logical location."

The excuse is transparent. Duskhollow is two territories away. There are three closer options.

I should call him on it. I should close the door. I should enforce the boundary I came here to rebuild.

Instead, I step back. "You're dripping on the floor."

He comes inside.

I take the tea from his hands and set it on the kitchen counter. He shrugs off his jacket and hangs it by the door. Water pools on the wood beneath it. He doesn't apologize. Just stands there, watching me with those steady eyes that have never once looked away when I needed them to.

"There's a towel in the bathroom," I say. My voice comes out rougher than I intend. "Second door."

He nods. Disappears down the hallway.

I stand in the kitchen and press my thumbnail into my palm. The wolf in my chest paces. Not speaking. Not yet. Just present in a way that makes my ribs feel too small.

When Wyatt comes back, his hair is damp but no longer dripping. He's rolled up his sleeves. The lodge suddenly feels smaller with him in it.

"How long?" I ask.

"How long what?"

"How long is this housing crisis going to require your presence in Ashenveil?"

He tilts his head slightly. "As long as it takes."

I should argue. I don't.

That night, we sit on opposite ends of the lodge's narrow sofa. I review alliance terms. He reads a book he pulled from his bag—something worn and dog-eared, the kind of book that's been read too many times to stay pristine. The fire crackles. Rain drums against the windows. Neither of us speaks.

But his shoulder is three inches from mine. And I can feel the space between us like a physical thing.

The morning braid starts again on day three.

I wake to his fingers in my hair, the same careful rhythm I told myself I wouldn't miss. He doesn't ask permission. I don't tell him to stop. When he finishes, his thumb brushes the base of my neck—just once, just barely—and the wolf in my chest rolls over like something basking in sunlight.

The coffee appears every morning. Black, one sugar, the blue mug I didn't bring with me. He must have packed it.

We fall into a routine that feels nothing like the contract and everything like something I don't have a name for. He works on Duskhollow logistics at the small kitchen table. I handle Ashenveil negotiations on the sofa. We cook together—badly, because neither of us is good at it—and eat in comfortable silence. Barnaby, the scruffy rescue dog Wyatt brought back from the human shelter near the border, sprawls across both our feet and snores.

Each night I sleep near him—separate beds, separate rooms, the boundary still technically intact—my wolf stirs harder. Not words. Not a voice. Just warmth. Just pull. Just the undeniable sense that something in me is waking up and I can't stop it.

I stop drafting dissolution documents.

One evening, we sit on the lodge steps watching the tree line fade into dusk. The air is cool and clean. Barnaby lies between us, his head on Wyatt's knee. The silence stretches long and easy.

"Why did you follow me?" The question slips out before I can stop it. Casual. Almost not a question at all.

Wyatt is quiet for a moment. When he answers, his voice has dropped the soft-puppy register entirely. It's just him. Just the truth.

"Because you didn't want me to."

I turn to look at him. His eyes are steady. No apology. No excuse.

"That's not a reason," I say.

"Yes, it is." He reaches down, scratches Barnaby's ears. "You ran because you felt something. I followed because I did too. And I'm not going to pretend I didn't just to make it easier for you to keep running."

The words land in my chest like stones. True and heavy and impossible to dismiss.

I don't respond. But I don't move away either.

We sit on the steps until the stars come out, and when we finally go inside, his shoulder brushes mine in the doorway. The wolf in my chest hums.

That night, Lilian's voice cuts through the mind-link like a knife.

*Your scent hasn't changed back.*

I'm lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. I don't answer.

*Charli. I can smell it from two territories away. You can run to the edge of the continent and it still won't change. That boy's wolf is in your blood now, and the only person who doesn't know it is you.*

I close the link. Pull the blanket up. Press my face into the pillow that smells like cedar and rain because Wyatt did laundry yesterday and folded my things with his.

I don't dispute it.

Because deep down, behind every wall I built, I already know she's right.
