Chapter 3

I hadn't been caught, and I could still waltz in and out of the police station-- little did they know. In this cat-and-mouse game, who would come out on top?

Days went by without a word from the police, and just when I thought they might be giving up, my phone rang.

"Ms. Brown, this is the Silverwood City Police Department. We've made some progress on your case and would like you to come in if you can."

I was about to head out with Michael when the call came through. What could be more important than finally seeing the "killer"? I quickly filled Michael in, and despite his concerns, he insisted on coming along.

At the station, the same officers who had interviewed me were there. They led us to a waiting area, and I couldn't help but let my mind race with what might happen next.

Moments later, James walked in with some files and photos. "Ms. Brown, can you take a look at these and tell me if this is him?"

I examined the photos carefully, double-checking until I finally nodded. "That's him!"

James smiled at my certainty. "This guy is Daniel Anderson, a known thief. He admitted he planned to break into your home, mess with the circuit, and knock you out, but he didn't expect you to fight back."

As for the weird text message, they confirmed it was just spam. The number had been tracked down and reprimanded. Daniel Anderson and the message were purely coincidental.

I felt a mix of relief and disbelief. I had thought someone was impersonating me, but it turned out to be a misunderstanding. "I'm just glad you caught him. Sorry for all the trouble," I said, trying to sound genuine.

James waved his hands, his expression a mix of emotions. "No problem, Ms. Brown. Catching thieves is part of our job. It's a shame we still don't have any leads on the serial killer case, though."

I nodded, sharing in his disappointment. After chatting a bit longer, Michael took my hand, and we headed home.

I figured this would be a small bump in the road I'd soon forget. The truth was, not every day was filled with overtime; it was just my excuse for when I was... busy.

Michael didn't have a steady job, but I never pried into his income sources. We met a year ago after a traffic accident where I rear-ended him. We had a silly argument-- he said I wasn't paying attention, and I insisted he had slammed the brakes too hard.

Somehow, amidst all that back-and-forth, we found a spark.

I thought Michael was just a typical guy, but he turned out to be surprisingly thoughtful. He mentioned he had a gathering that night and had already made dinner for me.

Outside, the full moon hung in the night sky as I rested my chin on my hand, smiling to myself.

I eagerly opened a forum on my phone, clicking into a thread titled, "How Are Those Adopted Kids Doing Now?" I murmured to myself as I scrolled.

I sifted through posts, searching for something interesting. Finally, my persistence paid off when I stumbled upon a thread from a user named "Sarah's Sky."
