Chapter 2

My phone exploded with notifications the moment I hit send. The family group chat lit up like a Christmas tree, but it was Forest's reaction that made the walls of our bedroom vibrate.

"What the FUCK did you just do?"

Forest burst through the door, his face contorted with rage. The phone in his hand trembled as he thrust it toward me.

"You think this is funny?" His voice rose to a shout that made me flinch. "Posting private messages for everyone to see?"

I stood my ground, though my legs felt like water. "Those aren't private when they're about our marriage."

"Our marriage?" He laughed, a harsh sound that cut through the air. "You're making a fool of yourself over a misunderstanding."

"Misunderstanding?" I gestured at his phone. "The photos, Forest. The five million dollars."

He snatched his phone back, as if I might grab it again. "Callie needed money for her studies. You're being ridiculous."

"Studies? She hasn't been in school for years."

His eyes narrowed. "You don't understand her situation. She's trying to better herself."

"By sending you lingerie photos?"

Forest slammed his fist against the wall, making a framed wedding photo rattle. "You need to retract this. Now. And issue an apology to everyone in the family."

"No."

The word hung between us like a blade. Forest stared at me as if he'd never seen me before.

"What did you say?"

"I said no." My voice grew stronger. "I'm not apologizing for your secrets."

He grabbed a crystal cup from the nightstand and hurled it against the wall. It shattered, water and shards raining down on the carpet.

"You stupid, vindictive woman," he hissed. "You think anyone will believe you? You're nothing without me."

---

James Harrison's office smelled of leather and expensive cologne. The divorce lawyer sat across from me, his silver hair catching the afternoon light as he reviewed my documents.

"This prenuptial agreement," he said, tapping a manicured finger on the paper, "actually works in your favor."

I blinked. "It does?"

"Forest was so concerned about protecting his assets that he included clauses about infidelity and emotional abuse." James smiled thinly. "He didn't think you'd ever use it."

My hands trembled as I took the paper. "So what does that mean?"

"It means you can file for immediate divorce proceedings." James leaned forward. "No waiting period. No negotiations unless you want them."

I stared at the document, remembering how Forest had pushed me to sign it, telling me it was just a formality. "How long will it take?"

"With what you've shown me?" James closed his briefcase with a decisive click. "We can have you legally separated by the end of the week."

---

The offices of Russell Industries felt different today. Or maybe it was me who had changed.

I walked through the open workspace, ignoring the curious glances. My resignation letter burned in my hand like a live coal.

Forest's assistant tried to stop me. "He's in a meeting—"

I pushed past her and threw open the door. Forest sat at the head of the conference table, Callie perched beside him in what should have been my chair.

"Ember," he said, his voice cold. "This is a closed meeting."

I tossed my letter onto the table. "My resignation. Effective immediately."

The room went silent. Callie's lips curved into a smile.

"Is this some kind of tantrum?" Forest didn't touch the paper.

"No tantrum." I turned to leave, then paused. "Oh, and Callie? I hope you enjoy my office."

As I walked out, I heard her voice, sweet as poison. "Forest, darling, since Ember's gone, I should take over her projects. The Westbrook contract needs someone with vision."

"That's right," Forest agreed. "You can have her bonus too. You deserve it more."

I kept walking, my heels clicking on the marble floor. Behind me, I heard Callie's delighted laughter and the sound of Forest's hand patting hers.

In the elevator, I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes. My phone buzzed with a text from James: "Meeting with judge scheduled for tomorrow. We're moving forward."

As the doors opened to the lobby, I straightened my shoulders. Forest thought he'd won, giving Callie my office, my bonus, my recognition.

But he didn't realize I'd already won something far more valuable: my freedom.

And I was just getting started.
