Chapter 1

The fluorescent lights of Metropolitan Hospital buzzed overhead as I settled into the familiar routine of my prenatal appointment. Seven months pregnant, and I still felt that flutter of excitement every time I came here. Today would bring another ultrasound, another glimpse of our baby growing strong and healthy inside me.

"Mrs. Robertson?" The nurse's voice pulled me from my daydreaming. She held a clipboard, pen poised. "I just need to update your emergency contact information."

"Of course." I shifted in the uncomfortable plastic chair, one hand resting on my rounded belly. "Shepherd Robertson, my husband. His number is—"

"Actually, I'm showing some conflicting information in our system." The nurse frowned at her computer screen, fingers clicking across the keyboard. "We have a Shepherd Robertson listed, but his spouse is showing as... Dahlia Sullivan?"

The words hit me like ice water. "I'm sorry, what?"

"Dahlia Sullivan. She's listed as his wife and primary beneficiary on his medical insurance." The nurse's voice grew uncertain as she took in my expression. "There must be some mistake..."

My hands trembled as I gripped the arms of the chair. "Show me. I need to see those records."

"Ma'am, I'm not sure I can—"

"Show me!" The force of my own voice surprised me. Several patients in the waiting room turned to stare.

The nurse hesitated, then turned her monitor toward me. There it was, in stark black and white: Shepherd Robertson, married to Dahlia Sullivan. Insurance beneficiary: Dahlia Sullivan. Emergency contact: Dahlia Sullivan.

Not me. Never me.

The room began to spin. A sharp, cramping pain shot through my abdomen, so sudden and fierce that I doubled over with a gasp. "Oh God... the baby..."

"Mrs. Robertson!" The nurse was beside me instantly, her hand on my shoulder. "Are you alright?"

But I wasn't alright. Nothing was alright. The pain intensified, radiating from my belly in waves that left me breathless. Dahlia Sullivan. Shepherd's childhood friend. The woman who'd been calling the house lately, claiming she needed to discuss "old times" with my husband.

"I need... I need to sit down..." But I was already sitting. The world tilted sideways, and then I was falling, the linoleum floor rushing up to meet me as darkness crept in from the edges of my vision.

Voices surrounded me—urgent, professional, distant. Someone was taking my pulse. Someone else was calling for a wheelchair. Through it all, one thought echoed in my mind like a death knell: Dahlia Sullivan. Dahlia Sullivan. Dahlia Sullivan.

The emergency room was a blur of activity. IVs, monitors, concerned faces asking questions I couldn't focus on. But through the haze of medical attention, I heard it—Shepherd's voice in the hallway, talking on his phone.

"Mother, I can't keep doing this." His tone was weary, frustrated. "Dahlia is my real wife, and this situation with Violet has gone on too long. She was just a mistake from my past that I should have ended years ago."

Each word was a knife to my chest. I lay perfectly still on the hospital bed, my hand pressed protectively over my belly, listening to my husband—my husband—dismiss our five-year marriage as a mistake. Our baby as a complication to be resolved.

Footsteps approached. I closed my eyes, feigning unconsciousness as Shepherd entered the room.

"How is she?" he asked the doctor, his voice now carefully modulated with concern.

"Stable, but we're monitoring both mother and baby closely. The stress appears to have triggered some contractions."

I felt Shepherd's presence beside my bed, felt him take my hand. The same hand that had slipped a wedding ring on my finger five years ago. The same hand that had apparently signed another marriage certificate eighteen months ago.

"Violet?" His voice was soft, almost tender. "Can you hear me?"

I opened my eyes slowly, meeting his gaze. For a moment, he looked like the boy I'd fallen in love with in high school—concerned, caring, genuine. But now I knew better.

"I heard you," I whispered.

His face went pale. "Heard what?"

"On the phone. With your mother." My voice was steady despite the chaos in my chest. "About Dahlia being your real wife. About me being a mistake."

Shepherd's hand tightened around mine, but his eyes darted away. "Violet, you're confused. The stress, the medication—you must have misheard something."

"Don't." The word came out sharp, final. "Don't lie to me anymore. I saw the insurance records. Dahlia Sullivan is listed as your wife."

He opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again. No words came. His silence was confession enough.

The baby kicked hard against my ribs, as if sensing the tension. I placed both hands on my belly, a protective gesture that felt futile now. Everything I'd believed about my life, my marriage, my future—all of it built on lies.

"How long?" I asked quietly.

He couldn't meet my eyes. "Violet, please, let me explain—"

"How long have you been married to her?"

The silence stretched between us like a chasm. Finally, barely audible: "Eighteen months."

Eighteen months. While I'd been planning our future, talking about baby names, dreaming of our growing family, he'd been living a double life. The contractions started again, stronger this time, and I knew with crystalline clarity that nothing would ever be the same.
