Chapter 1

The morning light filtered through our penthouse windows, casting golden patterns across the Egyptian cotton sheets. I stirred slowly, consciousness returning in gentle waves. Seven years. Seven years of what I believed was perfect love.

"Happy anniversary, my only one," Gabriel's voice caressed my ear as he entered our bedroom, a silver breakfast tray balanced in his hands. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, giving him that boyish charm that still made my heart flutter.

"You didn't have to," I murmured, sitting up against the headboard as the scent of fresh croissants and coffee filled the air.

"For you, I want to do everything." He set the tray down and sat beside me, his fingers brushing mine as he handed me a steaming cup. No redness appeared on his skin, no hives, no shortness of breath—just the miracle of his touch, reserved only for me.

The condition that had brought us together. The medical mystery that made me special, unique—the only woman whose touch didn't trigger Gabriel's severe allergic reactions. Seven years of being his sanctuary, his only one.

"I still remember the day we met," he said, his voice dropping to that intimate tone that made me feel like we were the only two people in the universe. "How terrified I was to touch you, and how beautiful you looked when you didn't make me break out in hives."

I laughed softly, remembering the wonder of that moment. "Your doctor called it a medical miracle."

"You're my miracle, Madison." His lips brushed against mine, soft and familiar. "Tonight will be perfect. I've made reservations at Celestial."

Celestial—the rooftop restaurant where he'd proposed, where we celebrated every anniversary. The place where New York City became our personal constellation of lights.

"I love you," I whispered against his lips, believing every syllable.

---

The evening skyline of Manhattan glittered like a jewelry box of stars and streetlights as we settled at our table on Celestial's terrace. Gabriel looked devastating in his tailored suit, his jawline catching the ambient light in ways that still made my breath catch after seven years.

"To us," Gabriel raised his champagne flute, the bubbles dancing like tiny fireworks. "To seven more years of perfect love."

I raised my glass, the cool stem between my fingers, when I felt a presence beside our table.

"Madison, I need to speak with you." Olivia Chen, my best friend since childhood, stood there in a sleek black dress, her expression unreadable.

"Olivia! I didn't know you were here tonight," I smiled, though something in her eyes made my stomach tighten.

"Ladies' room. Now." Her tone left no room for argument.

Gabriel's brow furrowed. "We're in the middle of our anniversary dinner, Olivia."

"It'll just take a minute," I assured him, squeezing his hand before following Olivia through the restaurant.

In the elegant privacy of the restroom, Olivia's composed facade cracked. "I've been trying to find the right way to tell you this for weeks."

"Tell me what?" My voice sounded distant to my own ears.

Without a word, she pulled out her phone and showed me a photograph. The world tilted beneath my feet.

Gabriel. My Gabriel. His arms wrapped intimately around a woman with honey-blonde hair. Charlotte. My half-sister. The architect of my deepest trauma. And she was visibly pregnant.

But what struck me hardest wasn't the betrayal. It was his skin—pressed against hers, with no sign of the angry red hives that supposedly erupted whenever he touched any woman but me.

"When?" I managed, my voice a thread of sound.

"Last week. Outside a clinic in Brooklyn." Olivia's eyes were filled with fierce protectiveness. "I've been investigating for months. There's more, Madison. So much more."

The photograph trembled in my hand. Seven years of memories kaleidoscoped through my mind, fracturing into sharp, dangerous shards.

Gabriel's phone rang just as he approached us. His face changed when he glanced at the screen—a subtle shift I'd seen a thousand times but never truly registered.

"I need to take this," he said, already turning away. "Business emergency."

I watched him walk across the restaurant, his back straight, voice low and urgent. How many calls had been "business emergencies" over the years?

"Go home," Olivia whispered. "Pack what you need. I'll help you figure this out."

I nodded, numb, as I returned to our table alone. The champagne had gone flat in my glass, bubbles surrendered to gravity. Just like the fantasy I'd been living in.

Back at our penthouse—no, his penthouse—I stood in the center of our bedroom, heart hammering against my ribs. The man I'd devoted seven years to, the love I thought was unique in all the world, was built on an elaborate lie.

My fingers curled into fists as a new emotion cut through the shock.

Rage.

I would uncover every lie, every deception. And then I would make Gabriel Sterling pay for stealing seven years of my life.
