Chapter 1

I was making tea when the doorbell rang.

Tuesday evening. Six-thirty. I remember because I'd just turned off the stove. The kettle was still clicking as it cooled. I set the mug on the counter and walked down the hall. Through the frosted glass panel beside the door, I could see a shape. Small. Hunched forward.

I opened it.

A young woman stood on the front steps. Twenty, maybe. Pregnant. Her mascara had run in two dark tracks down her cheeks. Her hands were wrapped around her stomach. She was shaking.

"Mrs. Montgomery?" Her voice cracked on the second word.

I didn't know her. "Yes?"

"I need to talk to you. It's about Anders."

My chest tightened. "What about Anders?"

She opened her mouth. Closed it. Her face crumpled. "He—he did something to me."

The words didn't land right. I heard them, but they didn't connect. "I'm sorry, what?"

"He assaulted me." She was sobbing now. Full, heaving sobs. "I didn't want to come here. I didn't know what else to do."

I felt the floor tilt. "That's not—Anders wouldn't—"

"Laurel." Cassius's voice came from behind me. Calm. Controlled. I turned. He was standing in the hallway, still in his suit from work. His tie was loosened. He looked at the girl on the steps, then at me. "Step back."

I didn't move. "Cassius, this girl is saying—"

"I heard her." He walked past me. Stood in the doorway. Looked down at her with an expression I couldn't read. "What's your name?"

"Ariella." She wiped her face with the back of her hand. "Ariella Herrera."

Something shifted in his face. Not shock. Recognition. "Rosalie's daughter."

She nodded.

I felt the air go out of the room. Rosalie. The name I'd swallowed for ten years. The name that lived in the silences between us. And now her daughter was on my doorstep, pregnant, saying my son—

"When did this happen?" Cassius asked.

Ariella's voice was barely a whisper. "Three weeks ago. At his apartment."

"And you're sure it was non-consensual."

"Yes." Her chin trembled. "I told him to stop. He didn't."

I found my voice. "Where is Anders?"

Cassius didn't look at me. "Upstairs."

I turned toward the stairs. Cassius caught my wrist. His grip was firm. "Don't."

"Let go of me."

"Laurel." His eyes locked on mine. Flat. Empty. "Let me handle this."

I yanked my arm back. "Handle what? She just accused our son of—"

"I know what she accused him of." He pulled his phone from his pocket. Dialed. Held it to his ear. "I need to report an assault."

The world stopped.

He was calling the police. On Anders. Our son.

I grabbed his arm. "Cassius, wait—"

He stepped out of reach. Kept talking into the phone. Gave our address. Said the words "sexual assault" in the same tone he used to order coffee. Calm. Professional. Like he was filing a motion.

I looked at Ariella. She was watching him. Not crying anymore. Just watching.

"Cassius, please." My voice broke. "We need to talk to Anders first. We need to hear his side."

He ended the call. Slid the phone back into his pocket. "His side doesn't matter right now."

"He's your son."

"And she's pregnant." He gestured toward Ariella. "With his child."

The words hit like a fist. I looked at her stomach. At her face. She met my eyes and looked away.

Footsteps on the stairs. I turned. Anders was standing at the top, staring down at us. His face was white. "Mom?"

"Anders, don't come down here," I said.

He didn't move. "What's going on?"

Cassius turned. Looked up at him. "The police are on their way."

Anders's eyes went wide. "What? Why?"

"You know why."

"I didn't—Dad, I didn't do anything."

Cassius's jaw tightened. "Stay upstairs."

"I'm telling you, I didn't touch her!" Anders started down the steps. Cassius moved to block him. Anders stopped halfway. His voice cracked. "Mom, I swear to God, I didn't—"

"I know," I said. I didn't know. I wanted to know. I needed to hear it from him. But the look on his face—the terror, the confusion—that wasn't guilt.

Cassius turned back to me. "Laurel, take Ariella inside. Get her some water."

I didn't move. "I'm not doing anything until we talk to Anders."

"We're not talking to him until he has representation."

"You're his representation."

He shook his head. "No. I'm hers."

The words landed like a blade. I stared at him. "What?"

"I'm taking Ariella's case."

I couldn't breathe. "You can't be serious."

"I've never been more serious."

Sirens. Distant. Getting closer.

Anders made a sound. A choked, desperate sound. "Dad, please—"

Cassius didn't look at him. "Go to your room."

"Dad—"

"Now."

Anders stood frozen. Then he turned and ran back upstairs. I heard his door slam.

The sirens were close now. Cassius opened the front door wider. Two patrol cars pulled up to the curb. Four officers got out. Cassius stepped onto the front steps. Shook hands with the first officer like they were old friends.

"Evening, Counselor."

"Thanks for coming so quickly," Cassius said. He gestured toward Ariella. "This is the complainant. Ariella Herrera. The suspect is upstairs."

Suspect. He called Anders the suspect.

I grabbed Cassius's arm. "Stop this."

He looked down at my hand. Then at me. His face was stone. "Let go, Laurel."

"This is our son."

"And this is the law."

The officers moved past us. Into the house. Up the stairs. I heard Anders's door open. Heard his voice, high and frightened. "I didn't do anything. I swear I didn't—"

They brought him down in handcuffs.

He was crying. Eighteen years old. My son. In handcuffs.

He looked at me as they walked him past. "Mom, please. Tell them."

I reached for him. One of the officers stepped between us. "Ma'am, step back."

"He's my son."

"Ma'am."

They put him in the back of the patrol car. I stood on the front steps and watched the taillights disappear down the street.

Cassius was still standing beside me. I turned to look at him. Really look at him. The man I'd loved for ten years. The man I'd given up everything for.

He wasn't looking at Anders. He was looking at Ariella.

And for the first time, I saw him clearly.
