After surgery, she wakes to a devastating photo: her husband playing happy family with his first love, his mistress wearing the locket that belonged to her dying mother. A decade of marriage has cost her career and her son's affection. She moves in with her sister and files for divorce. Ethan insists she's nothing without him—until he discovers the deal his company desperately needs bears her signature. Her son can learn to apologize. Her husband can learn to kneel. But only one will get another chance.

My Husband Gave My Mother’s Last Gift to His Mistress at Disney World While I Was in Surgery Chapter 1

The nurse snaps the plastic band around my wrist and checks it against her clipboard.

"Olivia Cole, date of birth March ninth. Perfect." She tugs it once to make sure it's secure. "Someone from transport will be up in about forty minutes."

"Thank you."

She leaves, and I look at the chair beside my bed. It's the ugly vinyl kind, pale blue, pushed against the wall. Ethan said he'd drag it over the second he got here.

My phone buzzes on the tray table.

**Ethan:** At the airport. Nicole's been really down lately, so I'm taking her to clear her head for a few days. Leo wanted to come too. Calling now.

I read it twice. Then the screen lights up with a video call, and I answer before I can think.

The noise hits first. Rolling suitcases, a crowd, a woman's voice over a loudspeaker announcing final boarding for Gate 14. Then the picture steadies, and there's my son.

Leo is wearing a gray travel pillow around his neck, the one I bought him for the Seattle trip last summer. He's standing between Ethan and Nicole, and Nicole's hand rests lightly on his shoulder like it belongs there.

Nicole Price. Ethan's best friend since college. The woman who comes to every birthday dinner and calls my son "buddy."

"Hi, Mom!" Leo waves.

"Hi, sweetheart." My voice comes out thin. I look past him. "Ethan."

"Hey." He angles the phone toward himself. He's wearing sunglasses pushed up on his head. "So, it's a little last-minute, I know."

"You promised you'd be here."

"Liv—"

"Mom, you're just going to the hospital," Leo says, leaning into the frame. "The doctors will look after you."

He says it so easily. Like he's repeating something he heard in the car on the way there.

I keep my eyes on my husband. "I'm asking where you will be, Ethan."

He sighs, the patient, tired sigh he uses when I've asked for something unreasonable.

My hand finds my purse on the bed and slides inside without me deciding to do it. My fingers close around a tube of lip balm, still sealed in its plastic. Ethan put it there last night. He said hospitals dry your lips out. He kissed my forehead and said, *You'll see me when you wake up.*

"At least wait until it's over," I say. "It's three hours. You can fly out tonight. Tomorrow. Please."

Off camera, soft and close, I hear Nicole. "Ethan, they're boarding. We have to go."

He turns his head away from me immediately. "Hey, it's okay. We're fine. Give me one second."

His voice is gentle. I haven't heard that voice aimed at me in weeks.

When he turns back, the gentleness is gone.

"Nicole needs a break," he says. "You need to stop making everything a crisis."

"A crisis." I almost laugh. "I'm wearing a hospital wristband."

"It's routine surgery. You said so yourself."

"I told you about this operation two weeks ago. You put it in the calendar."

"And I'm sorry the timing's bad, okay? But I'm not doing this right now. We'll call you after."

"Ethan—"

The screen goes black. *Call ended.*

I stare at it. My own reflection looks back at me from the dark glass, hair pulled into a hospital-regulation knot, face washed of everything.

I open our shared calendar. There it is, today's date in blue, the reminder he set himself. *Liv's surgery. 9 a.m. BE THERE.*

He typed it in all caps. I remember him doing it at the kitchen counter, grinning at me like he deserved credit.

And then, because the black screen won't stop staring at me, other things start floating up.

His phone, face down on the nightstand every night for the last two weeks. The client dinners that suddenly happened three times a week. The way he started taking calls out on the back porch.

And Leo, last Tuesday, eating cereal and asking out of nowhere, "Mom, is it hot in Orlando right now?"

I'd said I didn't know. I'd asked why. He'd shrugged and said a kid at school was going.

None of it meant anything on its own. I let every piece slide past me because each one was small and I was tired and I trusted him.

Now they sit in a line, and the line points to Gate 14.

When the nurse comes back to check my IV, I'm holding the phone so tightly my knuckles ache.

"Everything okay?" she asks.

"My husband won't be coming." I make myself say it plainly. "He was listed as my contact. I need to change that."

She doesn't ask questions. She just pulls a form from her clipboard and hands me a pen. *Emergency Contact / Alternate.*

I cross out Ethan's name. I write *Claire Bennett Dunn, sister,* and her number, and my hand only shakes on the last digit.

---

Transport is late. I lie on the gurney in the hallway outside pre-op, a thin blanket tucked to my chest, when my phone buzzes with a voice message.

It's from Leo.

"Hi, Mom. Um. Dad said you were upset." A pause, the hum of an airplane engine behind him. "Don't be mad, Mom. Nicole needs us. She's been sad for a really long time, and you have the doctors. Okay. Bye. Love you."

I play it once and don't play it again.

*Nicole needs us.* He's eight. He didn't come up with that sentence by himself.

I think about the night he was born. Thirty-one hours of labor, an emergency C-section, and when I woke up shaking and sick in recovery, Ethan was already there. He'd dragged the chair so close to the bed that the arm of it scraped the rail. He took my hand in both of his.

"When you need me, I stay," he said. "That's the deal. Always."

I reach out now without thinking about it, the same way I reached for him then.

My fingers hit the bed rail. It's cold metal, smooth and empty.

A man in navy scrubs appears at the foot of the gurney. "Olivia? I'm Marcus, I'll be taking you back. Anesthesia's going to meet you inside."

"Okay."

A second nurse walks alongside us with a checklist. "Any allergies?"

"Penicillin."

"Last time you ate or drank?"

"Nothing since ten last night."

"Any jewelry, dentures, contact lenses?"

"No." I hold up my phone. "What do I do with this?"

She produces a clear plastic bag with a zip seal and my name on a sticker. I hold the phone over it for a second. I could call him once more. Third time's the charm, isn't it?

I drop the phone in the bag and seal it.

"Please call my sister when I'm out," I say. "Claire. Her number's on the new form."

"We'll make sure she hears from us." She squeezes my shoulder.

The gurney starts to roll. Ceiling lights slide past overhead, one after another, white and slow, and I count them because it's easier than thinking. Eleven. Twelve. The doors swing open.

Somewhere over Georgia, my family is eating airplane pretzels.

---

My throat is the first thing I feel. It's raw and dry, like I swallowed sand.

I open my eyes to a dim room and the steady beep of a monitor. There's a cup on the tray table with a bendy straw sticking out of it. I reach for it.

Pain rips across my stomach, sharp enough that I gasp.

"Whoa, hey, easy." A nurse I don't recognize is at my side in two steps. She steadies the cup and guides the straw to my lips. "Little sips. You just had surgery, honey. Everything went well."

The water is lukewarm and it's the best thing I've ever tasted.

When I'm done, she smooths the blanket over me. My hospital gown is twisted and bunched under my arm, and she tugs it straight without comment.

"Your phone's been going off," she says, and hands me the plastic bag. "Figured you'd want it."

I tear the seal open with clumsy fingers.

One notification from Ethan.

Not *How did it go?* Not *Are you okay?* Not *I'm sorry.*

A photo.

Leo stands in the middle, grinning so wide his eyes are almost shut. Ethan is on his left. Nicole is on his right. All three of them are wearing Mickey Mouse ears, and behind them the castle glows pink against the evening sky.

Nicole's head tilts toward Ethan's shoulder. Ethan's arm stretches behind Leo and rests on her back.

Underneath, he wrote: *Best family trip ever.*

I look at it for a long time.

Then I look at the chair beside my bed. Same pale blue vinyl. Still pushed against the wall, exactly where it was this morning. No jacket thrown over it. No coffee cup on the floor. Nobody has touched it all day.

The nurse is writing something on the whiteboard across from my bed. She glances back at me.

"Is anyone else coming tonight? Husband, maybe? I can let the front desk know to send them up."

I think about the deal. *When you need me, I stay.*

"No," I say. "There isn't anyone else coming right now."

She nods and dims the light on her way out.

I don't reply to the photo. I don't type a single word.

I press my thumb on the image until the menu pops up, and I tap *Save*.
