Chapter 1

The phone lit up on the bathroom counter while I was brushing my teeth.

Three photos. Then a fourth. Then a message.

I picked up the phone with wet fingers. The first image loaded slowly, like my brain was giving me one last second to stay in the world I'd woken up in that morning. Then it sharpened.

Colton. Arianna. A hotel room I didn't recognize. Her back arched. His hand in her hair.

I scrolled. The next photo was worse. The third was clinical. The fourth showed them laughing after, tangled in sheets, her head on his chest.

The message sat below them in a neat little bubble: *He chose me. He's been choosing me. Happy anniversary.*

I set the phone down. My hands were steady. I rinsed my mouth. Spit. Rinsed again. In the mirror, my face looked exactly the same as it had three minutes ago. That seemed wrong.

I walked into the kitchen. The reservation confirmation for Balthazar was still pulled up on my laptop. 8 PM. Table for two. Our third anniversary.

Colton came through the door twenty minutes later with his jacket over one arm and his tie already loosened. He smiled when he saw me. The same smile he'd had at seventeen when he used to wait for me after class.

"Hey," he said. "You're home early."

I held up my phone. "Explain this."

He crossed the room and took it. I watched his face. He didn't flinch. Didn't freeze. He scrolled through all four photos with the same expression he used reading quarterly reports.

Then he handed it back.

"It's fake," he said.

"Fake."

"Photoshopped. Someone's trying to sabotage me. Probably Mitchell's people. We've been undercutting their contracts for six months."

His voice was so calm. So reasonable. I almost believed him for half a second, the way you almost believe a dream is real when you first wake up.

"Arianna sent them," I said. "From her number."

"Then someone hacked her phone. Grace, think about it. Why would I—"

"Don't."

He stopped. His hands went to his cuffs. He straightened the left one. Then the right. The small silver links caught the light.

I'd watched him do that a thousand times. I'd never understood what it meant until now.

"If you pursue this," he said quietly, "it's going to get complicated. The accounts are joint. My legal team is very good. And you know how this industry works. One word from me and every design house in New York will—"

"Will what?"

He met my eyes. "Will hear that you've become unstable. That the pressure got to you. That you're making accusations you can't prove because you're not well."

The apartment was so quiet I could hear the refrigerator hum.

"Get out," I said.

He didn't move. "Grace—"

"Get out of this room. Sleep somewhere else. I don't care where."

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he picked up his jacket and walked down the hall. I heard the guest room door close.

I sat on the couch. The reservation reminder pinged on my laptop. I closed it.

I didn't cry. I'd already decided I wouldn't give him that.

***

I didn't sleep. I lay in our bed—my bed—and stared at the ceiling and did math.

Three years married. Six years together before that. Nine years of my life.

The penthouse was in both our names. The savings account was joint. My studio lease was cosigned by his company because I'd been twenty-five and banks don't trust twenty-five-year-old jewelry designers.

He knew people. He had lawyers who billed eight hundred dollars an hour. He had Marcus Webb, his chief counsel, who I'd watched dismantle a former business partner so thoroughly the man left New York entirely.

I had my work. My name. Diana.

It wasn't enough. Not yet.

When the sun came up, I got out of bed and made coffee. Colton's door stayed closed. I drank two cups standing at the window, watching the city wake up.

By nine AM, I was sitting across from my attorney.

By noon, she'd drafted papers.

By two PM, Colton's legal team had responded with a formal refusal and a counter-filing that used the phrase "erratic emotional state" three times.

I read it in a coffee shop in the West Village. Ordered a second espresso. Read it again.

Then I went home and started planning.

***

The call came on a Thursday.

"Grace, darling." Colton's voice was warm. Affectionate. "I've made us a reservation. The Plaza. Tomorrow night. Let's talk. Really talk. No lawyers. Just us."

I almost said no.

Then I thought about Arianna's message. *He's been choosing me.*

"What time?" I asked.

"Eight."

I wore black. Simple. No jewelry except the pair of studs I'd made in my first year at NYU, before I'd met him.

I arrived exactly on time.

Colton was already seated. So was Arianna.

She wore pale blue. Soft fabric that draped over the curve of her stomach. She was showing. Not much. Just enough.

Colton stood when he saw me. "Grace—"

I sat down.

The waiter appeared. I ordered the steak. Medium rare. A glass of the Bordeaux. I smiled at him and used his name.

Arianna's hand rested on the table near Colton's. She wasn't wearing a ring. Neither was I anymore.

"Grace," Colton said. "I wanted you to meet—"

"I know who she is," I said. "I paid for her education."

Arianna's eyes widened. The performance of surprise. I'd seen her do it a dozen times.

I ate. The steak was perfect. The wine was excellent. Colton talked. I didn't listen.

When I finished, I set my napkin on the table, thanked the waiter again, and stood.

"Grace," Colton said. "Where are you going?"

I looked at him. At the boy I'd loved at seventeen. At the man who'd straightened his cuffs while threatening me.

"Home," I said. "To pack."

I walked out. Got in a cab. Gave the driver our address.

By the time I reached the penthouse, I'd already started planning the gala.
