Chapter 3

The call came at six in the morning.

I was already awake. Sitting in the library with cold coffee and the trust documents spread across the table. Numbers I'd memorized years ago. Signatures I recognized. Every line of credit. Every guarantee. Every invisible hand that built the empire Rohan called his own.

My phone lit up. Seventeen texts. All from Nadia.

I didn't read them. I knew what they said.

The cars arrived at seven-thirty. Two of them. The Aston Martin and a black SUV I didn't recognize. I heard the gravel. The doors. Voices rising before they even reached the house.

I stood. Smoothed my sweater. Walked to the foyer.

The front door slammed open.

Rohan came through first. His face was red. His hair uncombed. He looked like he'd driven straight through the night. Behind him, two men in suits I didn't know. Then Nadia. Her face was swollen. Bandages visible under her open coat.

Rohan stopped three feet from me. His chest was heaving.

"What did you do," he said. Not a question. An accusation.

I looked at him. This man I'd loved since I was eighteen. This man I'd built from nothing.

"I gave her what she gave me," I said quietly.

"You're a monster."

The word hung in the air. Sharp. Final.

I said nothing.

"A psychopath," he continued. His voice was getting louder. "A cold-blooded dynasty machine who thinks money gives you the right to—to torture people—"

"I didn't torture anyone."

"You mutilated her!"

His voice cracked. One of the men behind him shifted uncomfortably.

I kept my hands clasped. My face neutral. I'd learned this from Grandfather. You let them scream. You wait. Eventually they run out of air.

Rohan was shaking. "She's twenty-four years old, Adalynn. She made a mistake. A stupid, thoughtless mistake. And you—you had her held down and—"

"She wasn't held down."

"Bullshit."

"She chose to lie on that table. Just like I chose to lie on hers."

Rohan stared at me. Like he was seeing something he'd never seen before. Something he didn't recognize.

"You've lost your mind," he whispered.

From the adjoining sitting room, a sound. Soft. A whimper.

Nadia appeared in the doorway. She was holding the frame like it was the only thing keeping her upright. Her face was pale. Mascara smudged. The bandages stark white against her skin.

"Rohan," she said. Her voice was small. Broken.

He turned. Crossed the room in three steps. Caught her as her knees buckled.

"I've got you," he said. "I've got you."

She buried her face in his chest. Started crying. The kind of crying that shakes your whole body.

I watched from across the foyer. Felt nothing.

Then Nadia lifted her head. Looked at me. Her eyes were red and wet and filled with something that looked almost like triumph.

"I'm pregnant," she said.

The words dropped like stones into still water.

Rohan went rigid. His arms tightened around her.

"What," he said.

Nadia's hand moved to her stomach. "I'm pregnant. With your baby."

Silence. Complete and absolute.

I looked at Rohan. Watched his face change. Confusion. Then understanding. Then something else. Something that looked like purpose.

He straightened. Kept one arm around Nadia. Looked at me.

"I'm choosing them," he said. His voice was steady now. Clear. "My child. My future. I'm choosing love over—over this." He gestured at the foyer. The marble. The portraits of dead Hicks men on the walls. "Over your cold, empty legacy."

Nadia sagged against him. He bent. Lifted her. Carried her like she weighed nothing.

He walked past me. Didn't look back.

The men followed. The door opened. Closed.

I stood alone in the foyer.

The sound of the door echoed. Bounced off marble that had been here since 1847. Off walls that had seen three centuries of Hicks decisions.

I touched my chest. Two fingers. Light pressure. The scar beneath my sweater.

Then I walked upstairs.

---

Grandfather's study smelled like leather and old paper. He was at his desk. Reading the Financial Times with a fountain pen in his hand. Red circles around items of interest.

He looked up when I entered. Set down the pen.

"Sit," he said.

I sat.

He opened a drawer. Pulled out a bottle of Macallan and two glasses. Poured two fingers in each. Slid one across the desk.

I picked it up. Didn't drink.

"He's choosing her," I said. "And the baby."

Grandfather nodded. Like this was expected. Inevitable.

"I need the trust documents," I said. "All of them. Every collateral agreement. Every credit facility. Every guarantee with the Hicks seal."

He opened another drawer. Pulled out a folder. Thick. Bound with string. Set it in front of me.

"And I need your authorization," I continued. "To revoke the trust. At a time of my choosing."

Grandfather looked at me. Really looked. The way he used to when I was seven and learning chess. Evaluating. Measuring.

Then he picked up his fountain pen. Uncapped it. Pulled a single sheet of letterhead from his desk.

He wrote four lines. Signed his name. Dated it. Blotted the ink.

Slid it across the desk.

I read it. Simple. Declarative. Final.

Authorization to revoke the Edwards Trust, in full, at the discretion of Adalynn Catherine Hicks, effective immediately upon her instruction.

I looked up. "Thank you."

Grandfather picked up his glass. Took a sip.

"Your grandmother," he said quietly, "would have done the same thing."

I felt something crack inside my chest. Small. Hairline.

I stood. Picked up the folder. The authorization.

"I'll let you know when," I said.

He nodded. Returned to his newspaper.

I walked to the door. Stopped with my hand on the frame.

"Grandfather," I said.

He looked up.

"He called me a monster."

A pause. Then:

"Monsters," Grandfather said, "don't wait seven years to bite."

I left. Closed the door behind me.

Walked down the hall with the folder under my arm.

Outside, the sun was cold and bright.

I had work to do.
