After My Husband Ignored His Dying Father for His Mistress

8.8 / 10.0
Under the blinding glare of runway lights, a neurosurgeon sits beside a husband who hasn't moved in hours—while his mistress owns the catwalk in a fortune's worth of silk. She reads his stillness like a diagnosis: Hayes has already left her. Yet his dying father still calls. Her pulse holds steady at seventy-two as her world fractures, forcing a choice between love's wreckage and duty's last claim. A modern romance of quiet devastation and the moment everything changes.

After My Husband Ignored His Dying Father for His Mistress Chapter 1

The runway lights were blinding. I sat front-row at the Meatpacking District showcase, Hayes rigid beside me, and watched Carmen Herrera glide down the catwalk in a gown that cost more than most people's cars. The crowd applauded. Cameras flashed. I pressed two fingers against my inner wrist—pulse steady, seventy-two beats per minute—and made my diagnosis.

Hayes hadn't moved in two hours.

Not once.

I'm a neurosurgeon. I notice things. The micro-adjustments people make without thinking. The shift of weight. The crossing and uncrossing of legs. Hayes had chronic kidney disease, stage three, with complications that sent him to the bathroom every thirty minutes like clockwork. Dinners interrupted. Movies abandoned halfway through. Our honeymoon in Paris, a parade of public restrooms I'd learned to locate in advance like a tragic scavenger hunt.

But tonight, for Carmen's showcase, his body had cooperated perfectly.

I watched him watch her. His eyes tracked every step. His jaw was tight. His hands gripped the armrests of his seat like he was holding himself in place through sheer force of will. When Carmen reached the end of the runway and paused—one hip cocked, that practiced smile—Hayes leaned forward slightly. Just an inch. Enough.

The woman beside me whispered to her companion, "She's stunning."

She was. Carmen had that particular kind of beauty that photographs well and knows it. Dark hair in waves. A body that moved like it understood exactly what it was worth. She'd been Hayes's "sworn sister" for two years now. The friend he defended at every dinner party. The name that came up in every conversation. The woman whose calls he always answered, even when mine went to voicemail.

The lights dimmed for the finale. Music swelled. Carmen walked again, this time in something white and architectural that looked like it might collapse if you breathed on it wrong. The audience stood. Hayes stood. I stayed seated for three extra seconds—long enough to see him applaud without looking at me once—then rose and joined the standing ovation with a smile that felt like a surgical mask.

Backstage was chaos. Models changing. Assistants shouting. The designer accepting congratulations near a rack of garment bags. I followed Hayes through the crowd. He moved toward Carmen like she was magnetic north.

She saw him coming and lit up. "Hayes!" She threw her arms around his neck. He caught her, laughing, and spun her once. I stood six feet away and watched my husband hold another woman the way he used to hold me.

"You were incredible," he said.

Carmen pulled back but kept her hands on his shoulders. "You really think so?"

"Are you kidding? You owned that runway."

I stepped closer. "It was a lovely show."

Hayes glanced at me like he'd forgotten I existed. "Oh. Madeleine."

"Madeleine!" Carmen released Hayes and turned to me with that smile—the one that looked warm in photographs and cold in person. "I'm so glad you came. It means so much to have Hayes's support. And yours, of course."

"Of course," I said.

Hayes frowned. "You could sound more enthusiastic."

I blinked. "I said it was lovely."

"You said it like you were commenting on the weather." He crossed his arms. "Carmen worked for months on this. The least you could do is be supportive."

A runway assistant walked past carrying a tray of champagne flutes. I tracked her movement. Counted the glasses. Noted the exit behind the lighting rig. Old habit. Always know where the exits are.

"I am being supportive," I said.

Carmen touched Hayes's arm. A light touch. Fingertips only. "It's okay. Not everyone understands the bond we have. Some people just... don't get it."

Hayes didn't pull away from her hand.

I pressed my fingers to my wrist again. Seventy-four beats per minute. Elevated, but controlled.

"You're right," I said. "I don't get it."

I turned and walked away before either of them could respond. I moved through the backstage crowd with the same efficiency I used in the OR. Purposeful. No wasted motion. I found a quiet corner near the emergency exit and pulled out my phone.

Three texts from the hospital. One from my father's assistant. Nothing from Hayes, obviously.

I opened my bag and touched the pale cream envelope inside. The divorce papers. I'd drafted them six months ago. Carried them everywhere since. Not out of weakness. Out of patience. I was waiting for the right moment.

Tonight wasn't it. But it was close.

I stayed in that corner for exactly four minutes. Then I walked to the designer's assistant and asked where I could find a gift shop that was still open. She looked confused but gave me an address three blocks away. I thanked her and left through the side exit.

Twenty minutes later, I returned with a luxury gift bag. Cream-colored. Ribbon tied perfectly. I walked straight to Hayes and Carmen, who were still standing together near the champagne table, surrounded by admirers.

"Hayes," I said brightly. "I got you something."

He turned. "What?"

I held out the bag. "A gift. For both of you, actually."

Carmen's eyes narrowed slightly, but her smile stayed fixed. "How thoughtful."

Hayes took the bag. Opened it. His face went white.

Inside: a package of premium adult incontinence briefs. And a can of high-end puppy formula.

The runway assistant behind him choked on her champagne.

I smiled. "The briefs are for you, darling. Since sitting still for two hours must have been such a strain. And the formula is for Carmen—she seems to need so much nurturing."

Silence dropped like a curtain.

Hayes stared at me. Carmen's smile cracked. Actual fury flashed across her face—raw and unfiltered—before she caught herself.

Someone behind us laughed. Then someone else. Then the whole group was fighting to keep straight faces.

I touched Hayes's shoulder lightly. "I'll meet you at the car."

I walked out through the main entrance. The night air was cold. I got into the back seat of our car and told the driver to wait.

I sat in the silence. Opened my folio. Looked at the divorce papers again. My signature at the bottom, black ink on cream paper. I'd signed them the same day I drafted them. I'd been ready for six months.

But not yet.

The plan wasn't complete.

I slid the envelope back into the folio and closed it. Then I pressed my fingers to my wrist one more time and felt my pulse—steady, calm, and absolutely certain.
