Chapter 3

I heard his car in the driveway at eight forty. The engine cut. The door slammed.

I was standing at the kitchen counter. I'd been standing there for twenty minutes. My coffee had gone cold again. I hadn't moved to reheat it.

The front door opened. His footsteps came down the hall. Not fast. Controlled. Each one deliberate.

He stopped in the doorway.

I turned.

His face was blank. Not angry. Not anything. Just that smooth, professional neutrality he uses with difficult patients. The one that says he's already decided how this conversation ends.

"You went to the hospital," he said.

I nodded. "I did."

"You confronted Layla in front of her colleagues."

"I asked for my mother's necklace back."

He stepped into the kitchen. He set his keys on the counter. Aligned them with the edge. "You made a scene."

"I stated a fact."

"You embarrassed her."

I looked at him. At the man I'd married. The man who used to carry my books in the rain. The man who'd proposed on a terrace with lights and music.

"That necklace was my mother's," I said. My voice was quiet. Steady. "She gave it to me on my twenty-first birthday. It's the last thing I have of her. And you gave it to someone else."

He didn't deny it. He didn't apologize. He just watched me with that same blank expression.

"Layla didn't know," he said.

I almost laughed. "She knew."

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"I know she's been wearing my mother around her throat for weeks. I know you took it from our bedroom. I know you gave it to her like it was yours to give."

His jaw tightened. Just a fraction. The first crack in the mask.

"You're being paranoid," he said.

"I'm being observant."

"You're making accusations you can't prove."

I met his eyes. "The passenger seat in your car was moved. There's a handprint on the window. You started putting your phone face-down three weeks ago. And my mother's necklace is gone."

Silence.

The refrigerator hummed. Outside, a car passed.

Then Adrian stepped forward. Close enough that I could smell his aftershave. Close enough that I had to tilt my head back to hold his gaze.

"If you ever approach Layla again," he said, "there will be consequences."

I didn't move. "I want the necklace back."

His hand came up fast. Open palm. It caught me across the cheek with a crack that echoed in the quiet kitchen.

My head snapped to the side. Heat bloomed across my face. Sharp. Immediate. The taste of copper touched the corner of my mouth.

I stood there. I didn't lift my hand to my cheek. I didn't step back.

I turned my head slowly and looked at him.

He was breathing harder. But his expression hadn't changed. Still blank. Still controlled. Like he'd just corrected a surgical error.

"Don't make me do that again," he said.

I said nothing.

He picked up his keys. He walked past me. Down the hall. Up the stairs. The bedroom door closed.

I stood at the counter. My cheek burned. I could feel the exact shape of his palm printed on my skin.

I picked up my phone. My hands were steady.

I opened the bathroom door. Locked it. Sat on the edge of the tub.

The group chat notification lit up my screen. Holmes Family. Forty-three members.

Tiffany Holmes had sent the first message at 8:52 p.m.

*I'm heartbroken to share that Camille confronted a young nurse at Adrian's hospital today, making wild accusations and causing a scene in front of her colleagues. Adrian has been nothing but devoted to this marriage. I don't know what's gotten into her, but this behavior is unacceptable and hurtful to our family.*

The replies came fast.

Victor Holmes: *This is embarrassing. Adrian doesn't deserve this.*

Aunt Margaret: *Poor Adrian. He works so hard.*

Cousin Sarah: *Is Camille okay? This doesn't sound like her.*

Victor again: *It sounds exactly like someone who can't handle her husband's success.*

Tiffany: *I've tried to be patient. But Adrian is suffering. We all need to support him right now.*

More messages. More names. The thread scrolled and scrolled.

Not one person asked for my side.

I sat on the edge of the tub with my cheek throbbing and read every word.

Then I opened a new text to Reid.

I typed two words.

*Build everything.*

His reply came in seconds.

*Already started.*

I set the phone on the sink. I looked at myself in the mirror. My cheek was red. Swelling slightly. The shape of his hand still visible.

I touched it once. Lightly. Then I turned on the faucet and ran cold water over a washcloth.

I pressed it to my face and felt nothing.

No tears. No rage. Just that same cold, quiet stillness that had settled into my chest the night I found the handprint on the window.

Something in me had turned off. Or maybe it had turned on.

I wasn't sure which.

But I knew this: I was done being the woman who said *I won't*.

I was done being the woman who stood in doorways and said nothing.

Adrian had just made the biggest mistake of his life.

He just didn't know it yet.
