Chapter 1

The Grand Ballroom at The Plaza smelled like champagne and expensive perfume. Crystal chandeliers hung low from the ceiling, throwing warm light over hundreds of people in black ties and silk dresses. It was Hart Capital’s annual holiday gala.

My husband, Gunner Hart, stood near the stage. He was the CEO, tall and untouchable in his tailored tuxedo.

When the master of ceremonies tapped the microphone, the room quieted down.

"And now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for," the host said with a grin. "The grand prize holiday raffle. Ten thousand dollars in luxury travel. And the winner is… Mariana Ellis!"

Polite applause rippled through the room. My heart slammed against my ribs.

Earlier in the evening, after the winning tickets were drawn, the host’s assistant had brought the gold envelope to our table. I had slipped into the ladies' room ten minutes ago to do something reckless. Inside that envelope, tucked behind the travel voucher, was my sonogram. A plastic stick with two pink lines. And a small yellow Post-it note.

*Surprise, Daddy. Can we start over?*

Our marriage had been dying for a year. Gunner barely looked at me anymore. He worked late, he forgot dinners, and he spent every waking hour with his new executive assistant, Leighton Ortiz. But I thought this might save us. A baby. A fresh start.

My hands shook as I stood up. I smoothed down my velvet gown and stepped into the aisle, clutching the envelope tightly against my ribs. I rehearsed the words in my head. *I’ll take the mic. I’ll hand him the envelope. I’ll watch his eyes soften.*

I took five steps. Then a broad figure blocked the path.

It was Gunner.

He didn’t look at my face. He didn’t notice the tremor in my fingers. He simply reached out, clamped his fingers around the gold envelope, and pulled it clean out of my grip.

"Gunner?" I whispered.

He didn't answer me. He turned his back, stepped up onto the stage, and took the microphone.

"My wife is generous," Gunner announced, his voice smooth and commanding over the speakers. "She knows she doesn't need this trip. So tonight, this prize is going to someone who truly earned it. Leighton Ortiz. She’s had a rough quarter, and she deserves something nice."

The room erupted into loud, enthusiastic cheers.

Leighton sat at the front table. She let out a dainty gasp, covering her mouth with manicured fingers. She stood up, blushing, her silver dress catching the chandelier light.

Gunner walked down the steps, offered her his arm, and escorted her to the stage.

I stood frozen in the middle of the aisle. The spotlight glared off the brass fixtures. Around me, people clapped and raised their glasses, celebrating another woman. And in Leighton’s hand was the envelope containing the first picture of my child.

***

By midnight, a December blizzard had swallowed Manhattan.

The wind howled down Fifth Avenue, throwing thick sheets of snow against the pavement. Outside the hotel doors, Gunner whistled for Hart Capital’s private town car.

"Get in, Leighton," Gunner said, shielding her head from the sleet with his coat. "The roads are dangerous. I won't have you driving back to Queens in this."

He shut the door for her. He never looked back to see where I was. He didn't ask how I was getting home.

I walked three blocks in wet satin heels before I found an off-duty yellow cab willing to take me downtown. Cold slush soaked through my hem. By the time I reached our Tribeca penthouse, my lips were blue and my fingers were numb.

I unlocked the heavy front door and stepped inside.

A pair of wet snow boots sat in the foyer. Beside them were faint, wet footprints on the marble floor.

Then came the soft scuff of fabric.

Leighton walked out of the kitchen holding a mug of tea. On her feet were a pair of plush ivory cashmere slippers. My slippers. The ones with *M.E.* monogrammed in silver thread on the toes.

"Oh, Mariana," Leighton said, her voice dripping with sweet concern. "You’re soaked. Gunner said the roads were too dangerous, so he insisted I stay in the guest suite."

She looked down at her feet, then smiled slightly. "I hope you don’t mind. My feet were freezing."

I said nothing. I couldn't breathe.

Gunner walked out of the kitchen behind her. He had unbuttoned his collar and loosened his black tie. He smelled like bourbon and cold winter air. He walked past me as if I were a coat rack.

"What is that stench?" Gunner asked, frowning toward the stove.

On the kitchen island, a heavy ceramic pot sat on low heat. It was organic beef bone broth. I had spent eight hours simmering it that afternoon, checking recipes for prenatal nourishment.

"It's broth," I said quietly.

"It smells nauseating," Gunner said. He grabbed a kitchen towel, lifted the pot off the burner, and dumped the entire contents down the sink.

The rich, golden liquid splashed against the stainless steel and disappeared down the drain with a wet gurgle. Eight hours of work. Gone in three seconds.

He set the empty pot in the sink with a loud clang. Then he walked into the living room.

On the coffee table sat a tiny pair of pale yellow baby booties. I had hand-knitted them in secret over the last two months, hiding them in my closet until tonight.

Gunner’s hand swept across the table.

"Why is there always random junk lying around this place?" he muttered.

With one careless flick of his wrist, he swept the booties off the table and tossed them straight into the kitchen trash can. They landed directly on top of wet coffee grounds and greasy takeout boxes.

Leighton leaned against the marble counter, watching. Her lips curved into a tiny, satisfied smirk.

I stood in the dark archway of the hall. I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

Slowly, I brought my right hand up and pressed my palm flat against my sternum. Right over my heart.

The room felt completely silent, like the snow falling outside the window. And somewhere deep in my chest, the very last thread holding me to this man snapped.
