My Husband Let His Ex Take My Place as Mom—Then I Took Back My Son and Walked Away Novel Cover

My Husband Let His Ex Take My Place as Mom—Then I Took Back My Son and Walked Away

For six years, Maya Bennett devoted herself to her quarterback husband's world; for three, she raised their son, Noah. Then Jace installs his ex—family therapist Olivia Hastings—inside their home, handing her Maya's life piece by piece: the house code, daycare access, Noah's medical records, and Jace's trust. When a falsified medication log brands Maya an unfit mother, Jace sides with Olivia and asks a court to limit her access to her own son. Maya refuses to plead. She abandons the marriage, rebuilds her career, and battles to reclaim her voice and Noah—while Jace learns, far too late, exactly who he chose to believe.

Chapter 4

"Sign the bottom line, Jace."

I slid the blue plastic clipboard across the granite island. The metal clip rattled sharply against the stone, breaking the quiet of the morning kitchen.

Jace stared at the printed grid I had drawn by hand. He picked up the pen, hesitating. "You are treating our kitchen like an interrogation room."

"I am treating Noah's health with accuracy," I replied, tapping my index finger next to the empty signature box. "Until Dr. Shaw verifies the hospital IT logs, I refuse to rely on the shared application. Every single dose gets a physical signature."

He scribbled his name next to the six o'clock timestamp, pressing the pen down hard enough to indent the paper.

Olivia stepped out of the hallway, holding her silver tablet. She wore a perfectly pressed beige sweater, looking entirely too refreshed for a woman staying in a house with a sick toddler.

"Physical records are an excellent backup," Olivia said, her tone smooth and practiced. "I can digitize this sheet and sync it to the main portal for you."

She reached across the counter for the clipboard. I snatched it off the granite and pressed it flat against my chest.

"The original stays with me," I stated.

Olivia offered a sympathetic smile, tilting her head. "Having clear records benefits everyone, Maya. It keeps the whole care team on the same page."

"Which is exactly why I am keeping the paper copy," I said, holding her gaze until she blinked and looked away.

Jace tossed the pen onto the island. "She is offering a simple data entry favor. You are overly hostile to any help."

"I do not need help writing down a number." I turned my back on both of them and walked toward the nursery.

At eight o'clock that night, Noah slumped against my shoulder. His skin felt cold and clammy. He refused his favorite dinosaur cup, burying his face into the crook of my neck and groaning softly. His stomach churned against my collarbone.

Jace paced the living room, his thumb flying across his phone screen. He stopped abruptly, his sneakers squeaking against the hardwood floor.

"Why did you give him another dose?" Jace shoved his phone toward my face.

The glowing screen displayed two entries for liquid ibuprofen, logged exactly forty minutes apart. The second entry bore my username.

"I gave him exactly what you signed for at six o'clock," I said, shifting Noah's weight against my hip. I grabbed the clipboard from the end table and pointed to his messy ink signature. "Look at the paper."

"You were alone with him all afternoon," Jace argued, his voice rising in panic. "The digital log says you administered a second cup at six-forty."

"I did not touch the medicine cabinet after six."

Olivia walked into the living room, carrying a thick white binder. "I did not want to bring this up, but the situation requires absolute transparency."

She placed the binder onto the glass coffee table and flipped it open to a heavily highlighted page.

"This is a Family Risk Observation Record," Olivia announced.

I stared at the printed grid. "A what?"

"Caregiver stress often leads to medication errors," Olivia said, tapping a manicured fingernail against a column of notes. "I documented your severe lack of sleep, elevated anxiety, and high defensiveness over the past four days. It is incredibly common for an exhausted parent to forget they already administered a dose."

"I did not forget anything," I shot back, turning my focus entirely to Jace. "She is fabricating a psychological profile to cover up a forged digital entry."

Jace stared at the open binder. His jaw tightened. "She is a certified professional, Maya. Her documentation matches the system."

"The system you gave her full access to," I reminded him, my voice dropping an octave. "We are waiting for the hospital to trace the IP address. Do not let her diagnose me in my own living room."

"I am not gambling with my son's liver while we wait for an IT department," Jace said. He held out his right hand, palm up. "Give me the key to the medicine cabinet."

The room went dead silent. The hum of the refrigerator echoed from the kitchen.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

"I spoke to my lawyer an hour ago," Jace said. He kept his hand extended, his expression hardening. "Until this discrepancy is cleared, I am taking over his night care. You are restricted from giving him medication alone."

My fingers curled into my palms. I looked at the man I married, realizing a fundamental shift had just occurred. He did not view me as an angry wife anymore. He viewed me as a threat to our child.

"You are using her fabricated notes to lock me out of my son's care," I whispered. "We need to wait for the original logs."

"Our child is not a gamble," Jace countered, his tone turning rigid. "You need to sleep in the guest room tonight. Hand over the key."

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the small brass key, and dropped it into his open hand. The metal clinked sharply against his skin.

The next morning, sunlight filtered through the kitchen blinds. I sat at the island, my laptop open. My phone buzzed against the wood.

I answered it immediately. "Tell me you reviewed the files, Dana."

"I reviewed them," Dana Brooks said through the receiver. The lawyer's voice sounded sharp and urgent. "Jace's attorney is filing an emergency temporary custody application. They attached a behavioral observation report from an Olivia Hastings, plus a digital log showing a medication overdose."

"They are trying to strip my unsupervised access," I said, staring at the blank wall ahead of me.

"Yes. They are framing you as an unstable caregiver."

"I am sending you the hospital printouts, my paper logs, the daycare permission emails, and the system screenshots I took three days ago," I told her, dragging the files into a new email draft. "Do not ask for a mediation. Prepare a defense."

I clicked send.

I ended the call and walked into the foyer. Jace stood by the front door, adjusting his jacket collar. He refused to meet my eyes, focusing entirely on a loose thread on his sleeve.

"Once your state of mind is stable, we will go back to normal," he said, grabbing his car keys off the hook.

"Does your version of normal mean Olivia playing mother?" I asked, keeping my voice completely flat.

He opened his mouth to respond.

The doorbell rang, cutting him off.

Jace pulled the heavy oak door open. A man in a gray polo shirt stood on the porch, holding a thick manila envelope.

"Maya?" the man asked, looking directly past Jace.

I stepped forward.

The man pressed the heavy envelope directly into my hands. "You have been served."
