After My Husband Chose His Mistress, I Took Everything He Owned Novel Cover

After My Husband Chose His Mistress, I Took Everything He Owned

At 9:47 on a Tuesday night, Thatcher Cole shatters five years of silence. The husband who once chose his mistress claims he spotted a woman on Prince Street—her walk—and burned an hour on a corner hunting the right words. She reads it once, twice, a third time, barefoot on pale oak in her SoHo apartment, jasmine tea going cold on marble, every breath unsteady. His message is a dangerous door swinging wide: back toward the man who betrayed her, toward the hunger she buried deep, and toward a ruthless war for everything he once owned.

Chapter 1

The message lands at 9:47 p.m. on a Tuesday.

I'm barefoot on the pale oak floor of my SoHo apartment, a half-finished cup of jasmine tea cooling on the marble island. My phone lights up against the countertop, and I know before I look. Five years of silence has a very particular weight, and this notification feels heavier than the rest.

Thatcher Cole.

*I saw a woman on Prince Street today with your walk. I've been standing on a corner for an hour trying to figure out how to say hello.*

I read it once. Then again. Then a third time, standing very still, the way you stand when something delicate is balanced on your shoulder and one wrong breath will send it crashing.

Hollow. Rehearsed. He probably wrote three drafts.

Good.

I walk to the studio at the back of my apartment — the room I converted last spring, tall windows facing west, a single mirror against the exposed brick. I pull the tie from my hair. It falls to my waist. I turn on one lamp, the amber one, the one that makes everything look like honey. Then I press record and I dance.

Not for long. Thirty seconds. Barefoot, unhurried, a slow turn of my shoulders, hair swinging loose. I don't smile at the camera. I don't look at it at all. That's the point.

I send the video with no caption. No greeting. Nothing.

Then I power off the phone.

In the kitchen, I open a bottle of Burgundy I've kept in the wine fridge since the day I signed the lease on this apartment. A '15 Chambolle-Musigny. I've been waiting for a specific occasion to open it, and this — the first step of a long, patient descent — is exactly that occasion. The cork gives with a soft, clean pop. I pour one glass. Only one. I never drink more.

I raise it to the empty room.

"Welcome back, Thatcher."

---

He calls the next morning. I let it ring.

He calls again that night. I let it ring.

On the third day, at 4:12 p.m., with sunlight cutting across the polished floor of my gallery on Madison, I finally pick up.

"Florence." His voice cracks on the second syllable. Five years, and he still says my name like it belongs to him.

"Thatcher." I let a small silence bloom. Then, softer: "I wasn't sure I'd answer."

"I wasn't sure you would either."

I close my eyes. Isabelle passes by the office door, catches my expression, and keeps walking without a word. Bless her.

"Coffee," I say. "Just coffee. I'm not promising anything else."

"Anywhere. Any time."

"Friday. Maison Pickle at eleven." A place I've never been with him. Neutral ground. My rules.

He agrees before I finish the sentence.

---

Friday, I wear blush cashmere. A soft V-neck, a pale skirt, minimal jewelry. The look of a woman who has healed just enough to be curious, and not so much that she's dangerous. I've studied this outfit in the mirror three times.

He's already at the table when I arrive. He stands too fast. Almost knocks his water over.

God, he looks tired.

Gray at his temples now. A little heavier in the shoulders. His eyes drink me in like he hasn't eaten in a week, and I let him — I stand there half a beat longer than necessary, giving him the full portrait, before I sit.

"You look —" he starts.

"Don't." I lift my coffee. Smile just enough. "Let's not start there."

He swallows. "You're right. I'm sorry."

The apology is clumsy. I catalog it. I catalog the way his hand shakes when he lifts the cup, the way his eyes keep flicking to my mouth, the guilt lodged behind every sentence he doesn't quite finish. I've spent five years imagining this face across a table from me. The real thing is smaller than I expected. Easier.

We talk about nothing. His father's health. A gallery I opened last year. The weather turning. Beneath the surface, we are conducting a very different conversation, and we both know it.

When he asks if he can see me again, I take my time answering.

"Maybe," I say. "Let me think."

---

A week later, he's at my door with champagne and a speech.

I let him in. I let him say all of it — the *I was a coward*, the *I never stopped*, the *if there's any part of you that could* — and I do exactly what I've practiced. My hand finds his forearm. I look up at him with soft, wet eyes. I whisper, "I don't know if I can. But I want to try."

He kisses me like a drowning man.

I let him take me to bed. I make the right sounds. I keep my eyes closed, not from pleasure, but because if I open them I'm afraid he'll see what's actually behind them.

When the shower runs, I move.

His phone is face-up on the nightstand. His passcode is the same one he used seven years ago — our old anniversary. Of course it is.

I find her name. *Mallory ❤️.* I block the number. I create a new contact — *M. — contractor* — and paste her digits in. I set the phone back exactly where it was. Face-up. Angle unchanged.

Steam curls under the bathroom door. I slip into a robe.

On a sheet of my heaviest cream stationery, I write in careful ink:

*Last night was a mistake. I'm not ready. — F.*

I leave it on the pillow beside his head.

By the time he wakes, I'm three blocks away, coffee in hand, phone buzzing against my ribs. I don't answer until noon. When I do, my reply is seven words long.

Across town, in a townhouse I have never seen, Mallory Dean is beginning to notice her calls aren't going through.

And somewhere behind a bedroom wall, a small boy is holding his rabbit tighter, listening.
