Chapter 2

The first time I saw Victoria after that devastating day, I was reaching for a box of crackers in the grocery store, my swollen fingers struggling with the simple task. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in harsh, clinical white.

"Emma."

That voice. Honey-sweet and razor-sharp, exactly as I remembered from high school hallways. My hand froze on the shelf.

She stood at the end of the aisle like something from a magazine spread—designer coat draped perfectly over her shoulders, not a hair out of place despite the October wind outside. Her ice-blue eyes swept over my rumpled maternity dress, my unwashed hair pulled back in a messy ponytail.

"You look..." She paused, tilting her head with mock concern. "Tired."

The baby kicked hard against my ribs, responding to the tension radiating through my body. I forced myself to meet her gaze, my voice barely above a whisper.

"What do you want, Victoria?"

Her smile was all teeth and no warmth. "Just shopping. Though I suppose I should ask how you're managing. David mentioned you've been having such a hard time lately."

David. My husband who hadn't returned my calls in three days. My chest tightened.

"Don't worry," Victoria continued, stepping closer. "I'm taking very good care of things. He's been staying with me while he sorts out his... situation."

The crackers slipped from my numb fingers, hitting the floor with a sharp crack. Victoria's eyes followed the sound, and when she looked back up, her expression had shifted to something almost predatory.

"I'll be taking care of everything soon," she murmured, then walked away, her heels clicking against the linoleum like a countdown.

Two days later, she appeared outside Dr. Chen's office.

I was struggling to haul myself out of my car, one hand pressed against my aching back, when I spotted her sleek black Mercedes parked directly across from the medical building. She sat behind the wheel, designer sunglasses reflecting the afternoon sun, but I could feel her gaze tracking my movements.

Inside, Dr. Chen noticed my elevated blood pressure immediately.

"Emma, your stress levels are concerning," she said, her kind eyes crinkling with worry. "Is everything alright at home?"

I wanted to tell her everything—about David, about Victoria, about the way my world had imploded in the span of a week. Instead, I just nodded and mumbled something about normal pregnancy anxiety.

But when I emerged from the appointment, Victoria was gone, leaving only the lingering scent of expensive perfume in the autumn air.

The breaking point came on a Thursday.

Sarah had come over to help me sort through baby clothes, her presence the only bright spot in my increasingly dark days. We were folding tiny onesies when the doorbell rang.

The delivery man held a clipboard and gestured to an enormous box on my doorstep. "Emma Martinez? This is for you."

My hands shook as I signed for it. The return address was from the most exclusive baby boutique in the city—the kind of place where cribs cost more than most people's cars.

Sarah helped me drag it inside, both of us breathless by the time we got it to the living room. The box was pristine white with silver ribbon, like something from a fairy tale. But fairy tales didn't usually come with poison apples.

Inside was the most beautiful crib I'd ever seen. Hand-carved wood with intricate details, the kind of heirloom piece that gets passed down through generations. Nestled in tissue paper was a small white card.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

"For the child who will soon need a better home. —V"

The card fluttered to the floor as something inside me snapped. All the weeks of holding myself together, of trying to stay strong for the baby, of pretending I could handle this—it all crumbled at once.

I sank to my knees beside the crib, sobs tearing from my throat with a violence that scared me. My whole body shook, the baby responding to my distress with frantic movements that only made me cry harder.

"Emma, breathe," Sarah's voice seemed to come from far away. Her hands were on my shoulders, steady and warm. "Breathe with me."

But I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think past the rage and humiliation and bone-deep terror that Victoria was right—that I wasn't strong enough, wasn't good enough, that my child would be better off without me.

"We're returning this," Sarah said firmly, already reaching for her phone. "And we're documenting everything. Every gift, every encounter, every threat."

"It wasn't a threat," I whispered.

Sarah's expression hardened. "Emma, look at me. This is harassment. This is psychological warfare. And we're going to fight back."

As the delivery truck pulled away with the returned crib, I stood at my window watching Victoria's black Mercedes cruise slowly past my house.

She was accelerating her game, and I had a sinking feeling that the worst was yet to come.
