Chapter 1

The marble bathroom was cold under my bare feet. I stood there in my silk robe, staring at the plastic stick in my hand. Two pink lines. Clear. Undeniable.

I blinked. Looked again. Still there.

My throat tightened. I pressed my palm flat against my stomach, even though there was nothing to feel yet. Just the knowledge. Just the impossible, miraculous fact that after three years of needles and waiting rooms and failed cycles, it had finally worked.

I set the test on the counter and gripped the edge of the sink. My reflection looked pale. Tired. The dark circles under my eyes were permanent now, souvenirs from all those early morning clinic appointments and hormone shots that left bruises across my abdomen like a roadmap of pain.

But this made it worth it. All of it.

I picked up the test again, careful, like it might disappear if I held it too tight. Nathan would be so happy. He had to be. This was what we'd been fighting for. What I'd been fighting for.

I found a small velvet jewelry box in the drawer—one that used to hold a bracelet he gave me years ago—and tucked the test inside. Tonight. I'd tell him tonight. Our anniversary dinner. Just the two of us. I'd slide the box across the table and watch his face light up the way it used to, back when he still looked at me like I mattered.

I spent the afternoon in the kitchen. Seared scallops, roasted asparagus, risotto—all his favorites. I set the table with linen napkins and the good crystal. Lit candles. Put on the dress he once said made me look beautiful.

The velvet box sat next to my plate, waiting.

Six o'clock came and went. Then seven. Then eight.

I texted him. No response.

I called. Straight to voicemail.

The candles burned down to stubs. The risotto congealed in the pot. I sat at the table alone, staring at the empty chair across from me, one hand resting on the velvet box.

At nine-thirty, my phone buzzed. Not Nathan. A notification from Instagram. Someone I barely knew had tagged him in a story.

I opened it.

A Lamborghini. Brand new. Candy-apple red. Parked outside a SoHo building I recognized. Two dozen long-stemmed roses on the passenger seat, wrapped in black silk paper. The caption: "Some people know how to celebrate 💕 @NathanMurray @KehlaniMorales."

I stared at the screen until it went dark.

Then I opened it again and looked at the price tag in my head. The car alone was worth more than every gift Nathan had given me in ten years of marriage. Combined.

He'd told me last week we couldn't afford a new coffee maker.

I set the phone down. Picked up the velvet box. Opened it. Looked at the two pink lines.

Then I took the test out, held it in both hands, and tore it in half.

The pieces fell onto the white linen tablecloth. I didn't cry. I just sat there, watching the candle smoke curl toward the ceiling, feeling something inside me go very still and very cold.

Nathan came home after midnight. I heard his keys in the lock, his shoes on the hardwood. He didn't call out. Didn't ask where I was. Just went straight to the bedroom.

I followed him. Stood in the doorway.

He had his back to me, phone pressed to his ear, voice low and soft. "I know, baby. I know. I'll see you tomorrow. I promise."

Baby.

He'd never called me that.

When he finally turned and saw me, he didn't flinch. Didn't apologize. Just ended the call and shoved the phone in his pocket.

"Where were you?" I asked.

"Work dinner ran late."

"It's our anniversary."

"I forgot." He pulled off his tie. "I'm exhausted, Ariel. Can we not do this right now?"

I could smell her perfume on him. Tuberose and vanilla. Thick and sweet and completely wrong.

"Who were you talking to?"

"A client."

"You called her baby."

His jaw tightened. "You're being paranoid."

"I saw the Instagram story. The Lamborghini. The roses."

He laughed. Actually laughed. "You're upset about a car I bought for a business partner? Grow up."

"You told me we couldn't afford—"

"I said I'm tired." He stepped past me, walked into the bedroom, and shut the door. The lock clicked.

I stood there in the hallway, one hand pressed against my stomach, listening to him move around on the other side of the door. Listening to him get into bed. Listening to the silence that followed.

I pulled out my phone. He'd blocked my number.

I went back to the dining room. Looked at the cold food. The burned-down candles. The torn pregnancy test on the tablecloth.

Then I walked to the living room, sat on the sofa, and stared out at the Manhattan skyline. The lights stretched on forever, cold and glittering and indifferent.

I rested my hand on my stomach again. This time it felt different. Not like a miracle. Like a weapon.

I opened my laptop and searched for divorce attorneys in Manhattan. Found one with a five-star rating and a reputation for taking men like Nathan apart in court.

I sent an email requesting a consultation.

Then I closed the laptop and sat in the dark, waiting for morning.
