Chapter 1

CASSANDRA P. O. V

The first whisper of the night was a shift in the wind, brushing against my window pane. Then came a soft thud, like a body hitting the floor, and my eyes flew open. My heart hammered in my chest, a frantic drumbeat against the silence.

The pale silver moon cast a long, eerie shadow across the room. And then I saw it, a flash of grey fur moving in the corner. My breath caught in my throat.

"Dean!" I screamed, my voice cracking. It was an instinctual reaction, calling for my husband.

But there was no response. Only the sound of heavy breathing and the scratching of claws against the wooden floor. I scrambled back, pressing myself against the headboard, my hand reaching out to feel the smooth, cold metal of my dagger.

Panic swelled in my chest. This couldn't be happening. We were safe here, protected by the pack. We had always felt secure, shielded by Dean's strength and the walls of our home. But now, a wolf was in our room, and Dean was nowhere to be seen.

A low growl echoed, and the wolf turned, its eyes burning with an unnatural intensity. I instinctively backed away further, pressing myself into the shadows. I could feel my heart pounding in my ears, drowning out any other sound.

"Dean!" I cried again, "Help me!"

A roar erupted from the hallway. I felt the bed tremble under me. It was Dean, his voice raw with fury. He was fighting.

I scrambled out of bed, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. The wolf was gone. I was still in my nightgown, cold and vulnerable, but I had to find Dean.

I found him in the hallway, his face a mask of rage and desperation. He was battling several wolves, their eyes glowing with a malevolent light.

But what shocked me most was who stood beside him, seemingly unharmed – Winona, our servant.

"Dean!" I cried, rushing to him, my body shaking.

He caught my eye for a split second, his face a storm of emotions. But then, his gaze flickered back to the wolves, his focus on protecting Winona.

"Get back," he growled.

Winona stood there, her face pale but resolute. I stared at her, my mind struggling to comprehend the scene before me.

Why was he protecting her, when I was the one he was supposed to protect?

A sharp pain exploded in my side, and I gasped, clutching my stomach. I saw the gleam of a wolf's teeth in the darkness, and then everything went black.

I woke up on my bed, a cold sweat clinging to my skin. The room was bathed in the soft light of dawn, and the air was thick with the scent of lavender.

My hand instinctively reached for my stomach. It was a dull ache, a constant reminder of the pain that had ripped through me. My breath hitched in my throat.

My baby…

I rolled over, trying to catch my breath, and that's when I realized it. The pain in my stomach wasn't just a dull ache. It was…empty.

Tears welled in my eyes, hot and stinging. I hadn't lost consciousness for long. The wolf had stabbed me, while Alpha Dean had saved Winona, but not me. And he had no idea we lost our child.

"Why didn’t you protect me?" I whispered, the words choked with pain and betrayal.

I felt the remnants of the attack still clinging to me, the fear, the vulnerability. The pain, not just from the wound, but from the betrayal.

The door creaked open, and Dean entered, his face weary and drawn. He looked at me, his eyes dark and troubled.

"Cassie, I’m so sorry," he said, his voice rough with emotion.

I stared at him, my heart filled with cold, hard anger. "You saved her, our servant, Winona. You didn’t even notice I was hurt until I was unconscious."

He looked away, his face turning ashen. "I couldn’t save anyone," he whispered, his voice strained.

My anger flared. "Is she more important than your mate?" I spat.

Dean’s jaw clenched, his eyes burning with a fury that matched mine. "Don’t you dare say that," he growled.

I didn’t flinch. "Why did you choose her over me? Why didn’t you even look at me?"

My voice cold and unwavering.

He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a mix of pain and something else...like fear?

My heart twisted a sharp pang of unease. Something wasn’t right. And then I saw it. A flicker of something sinister in his eyes, a dark glint that I had never seen before.

A cold chill crept down my spine. Are they cheating on me? I wondered. I felt a darkness growing, one that threatened to swallow us both.
