After My Boyfriend Humiliated Me, I Married the Man Who Waited Novel Cover

After My Boyfriend Humiliated Me, I Married the Man Who Waited

For ten years, I gave Clyde Richards everything—my heart, my patience, eight proposals he never took seriously. On the eve of my thirtieth birthday, I reserved a candlelit table in Los Angeles, wore the green dress he once admired, and prepared to ask a ninth time. He arrived late, barely glanced at me, and set his phone face-up. That night, I saw the truth. When the wine arrived, I walked away from a decade of waiting—and into the arms of the man who had been quietly holding on for me. A modern romance about choosing yourself, and the love that waits.

Chapter 1

I booked the table at Lumière three weeks before my thirtieth birthday. It was a corner spot with candles and a view of the Los Angeles lights. I bought a new dress, dark green, the color Clyde Richards once said he liked on me.

Clyde showed up forty minutes late. He kissed my cheek without looking at me. His phone sat face-up beside his plate.

I had loved him for ten years. I had asked him to marry me eight times. Tonight would be nine.

I waited until the wine came. Then I covered his hand with mine.

"Clyde, I'm thirty today."

"I know. Happy birthday." His thumb kept moving on the screen.

"I want to build something with you. A home. A family. Are you ready now?"

He didn't look up. "Mara. It's not the right time."

"Then when is?"

"Don't do this here." He sighed like I was a bill he forgot to pay. "You know how stressed I am with the IPO."

His phone buzzed. A name lit up the screen. *Romina.* His executive assistant.

He was already standing. "Work emergency. I have to take this."

"It's my birthday."

"And I'm here, aren't I?"

He walked out. He didn't come back.

Around me, couples leaned close. A man laughed at something his wife whispered. The waiter set down a small chocolate cake with one candle. *Happy Birthday* was written in gold sugar. He saw the empty chair, and his smile wobbled.

I didn't cry. I was too tired to cry.

I watched the candle flicker. My thumb found the base of my left ring finger. I'd done that for years. Pressing the bare skin where a ring should be. Waiting.

The silence at the table used to feel like patience. Tonight it felt like a funeral.

I paid alone. I tipped thirty percent, because the waiter had been kind. Then I drove home. The city lights smeared across my window like wet paint.

---

Three days later, I collapsed at my desk.

I woke up in a hospital bed with an IV in my arm. The nurse said "severe exhaustion" like it was a confession.

Clyde came that evening. Romina Diaz came with him.

She was all glossy hair and Chanel No. 5. She held a bouquet of white chrysanthemums. Funeral flowers.

"For you, Mara." She smiled sweetly. "I thought these suited the mood."

My throat burned. "Get those out of my room."

"Oh! I didn't mean anything." She rested her hand on Clyde's arm. Her nails were perfect.

"Mara," Clyde snapped. "She's being nice. Apologize."

"Apologize? She brought me funeral flowers."

"You're being dramatic. In front of my colleague." His jaw went tight. "Say sorry."

The nurse by the monitor went still. Another one stopped in the doorway.

I looked at Clyde. Really looked. Something inside me cracked. Quietly. Like ice under the surface of a lake.

I said nothing. He left angry. Romina left smiling.

At midnight, I called my father in Seattle.

"Mara?" Everett Ford's voice was rough with sleep. He didn't ask why. "Whenever you're ready to come home, sweetheart."

I didn't answer. But I didn't hang up either. We just breathed on the line until my eyes closed.

---

Our anniversary came two weeks later. Clyde tossed me a blue pouch with his company logo on it. Inside was a cheap metal bracelet. The kind they handed out at trade shows.

"Thanks," I said. My smile felt like it was stapled on.

"Figured you'd like it. It's from the launch."

Four days later, I scrolled Instagram in bed. Romina's post was at the top. A Tiffany diamond necklace lay against her collarbone. The caption read: *From someone who knows my worth 💎.*

I stared at the screen. Then at my wrist.

I took the bracelet off and dropped it in the trash. It made a small, cheap sound.

---

On Saturday, I drove to Napa alone. Months ago, I had booked a vineyard for our wedding. A hopeful deposit. My little secret.

"I need to cancel," I told the coordinator.

"May I ask why? The date is still—"

"There's no groom."

She gave me a soft, sorry look. That look cost me more than the deposit.

On the drive back, my hands shook on the wheel. I pulled into a boutique hotel off the highway. I just needed a minute to breathe.

The corridor was hushed. Thick carpet. Dim gold lights. Then I heard a laugh. I knew that laugh. I'd heard it for ten years.

It came from behind a suite door.

"Mara is convenient, but God, she's boring." Clyde. "Like a golden retriever. Loyal, predictable, and honestly kind of desperate."

Romina giggled. "Poor thing."

I froze. My hand was raised to knock. My knuckles hung an inch from the wood.

I could scream. I could tear that door open and make him look at me.

I lowered my hand.

Then I turned and walked away. I didn't make a sound. Not one.

Outside, the sun was too bright. I sat in my car and didn't start it. My thumb drifted to the base of my ring finger.

For the first time in ten years, I didn't want anything there.
