Chapter 2

The courthouse steps felt cold beneath my feet as I smoothed down my cream silk dress—not white, never white again, but something clean and new. Walker stood beside me, his hand steady on my back as photographers from the society pages captured what they thought was a romantic elopement between childhood friends.

They had no idea they were documenting the funeral of my old life.

"Ready?" Walker's voice was gentle, his gray eyes searching my face for any sign of doubt.

I nodded, clutching the small bouquet of white roses he'd somehow procured in the two hours since my phone call. "More than ready."

The ceremony itself was brief, efficient. Judge Morrison, a family friend, spoke about love and commitment while I focused on Walker's hands—steady, warm, honest hands that had never betrayed me. When he slipped the simple platinum band onto my finger, I felt something shift inside me. Not love, not yet, but possibility.

"You may kiss the bride," Judge Morrison announced.

Walker's kiss was soft, respectful, nothing like the desperate passion I'd witnessed between Lincoln and Teresa. But it was real, and it was mine, and that was enough.

The small gathering of witnesses—carefully selected members of elite society who would ensure the news spread like wildfire—applauded politely. Mrs. Whitmore from the country club board was already reaching for her phone, no doubt preparing to share the "delightful surprise" with her extensive social network.

By evening, everyone would know. Lincoln and Teresa's affair would be the scandal of the season, while I would be seen as the clever woman who'd landed on her feet with an even better match.

"Mrs. Reed," Walker murmured against my ear as we walked down the courthouse steps. "How does it feel?"

"Strange," I admitted. "But good strange."

The ride back to the Hill estate was quiet, both of us lost in thought. I stared at my new ring, so different from the ostentatious diamond Lincoln had chosen. This was simpler, more elegant, more me.

We arrived to find chaos.

My brother Marcus's voice carried from the library, raw with fury. "Seven years, Teresa! Seven goddamn years you've been lying to my face!"

"It wasn't supposed to happen!" Teresa's voice was shrill, desperate. "It just... it was bigger than both of us!"

"Bigger than our marriage? Bigger than our family?"

Walker's jaw tightened as we paused in the foyer. "Should we—"

"No." I straightened my shoulders. "This needed to happen."

The library doors were slightly ajar, and through the gap, I could see Marcus pacing like a caged animal while Teresa sat huddled on the leather sofa, mascara streaking down her cheeks.

"You destroyed everything," Marcus continued, his voice breaking. "My marriage, my relationship with my sister, my trust in—"

"Your sister stole him from me!" Teresa's composure finally shattered completely. "She had everything—the family name, the respect, the perfect life—and then she took the one thing that was mine!"

"He was never yours!" Marcus slammed his hand against the mantle. "He was engaged to Ivory! You were married to me!"

"A marriage you arranged! A marriage I never wanted!" Teresa shot to her feet, her face twisted with years of resentment. "You think I don't know why you married me? To secure your father's business deal with my family. I was a transaction, just like Ivory was supposed to be for Lincoln!"

"That's not—"

"It is!" Teresa's voice turned venomous. "At least Lincoln chose me. At least what we had was real, not some boardroom agreement dressed up as romance."

The silence that followed was deafening. Through the crack in the door, I watched my brother's face crumble as the weight of her words hit him.

"Get out," he said quietly.

"Marcus—"

"Get out of my house. Get out of my life. I'll have divorce papers drawn up by morning."

Teresa's sob echoed through the room, but there was no sympathy left for her tears. She'd made her choice seven years ago, and now she would live with the consequences.

Footsteps approached the library doors, and Walker quickly guided me toward the staircase. We were halfway up when Teresa emerged, her face a mask of rage and humiliation. She spotted us immediately, her eyes focusing on my new wedding ring with laser intensity.

"Congratulations," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "How convenient that you had a backup plan ready."

"Teresa," Walker's voice carried a warning.

She ignored him, her gaze fixed on me. "You think you've won, don't you? You think you can just move on and pretend none of this happened?"

I met her stare steadily. "I think I've chosen happiness over bitterness. You should try it sometime."

Her laugh was sharp, unhinged. "This isn't over, Ivory. You may have fooled everyone else, but I know what you really are. And so does Lincoln."

Before either of us could respond, she swept past us toward the front door, leaving only the echo of her heels and the faint scent of her perfume—the same perfume that had clung to Lincoln's shirt.

Walker's hand found mine, his fingers intertwining with my own. "Are you all right?"

I looked down at our joined hands, at the simple band that marked my new beginning, and felt something settle into place.

"Yes," I said, and for the first time in days, I meant it. "I think I really am."
