Chapter 1

"Are you here because you're qualified, or because Mercer got you in?"

Cole Harding's voice carried across the Westlake University training room.

Half the hockey roster stopped taping sticks.

I set my clipboard on the nearest treatment table and looked at the captain's right hip instead of his face. He was six foot three, broad through the shoulders, and apparently accustomed to people reorganizing themselves around his mood.

"Your right hip is rotating late," I said. "You're dumping the load into your lower back every time you push off. That's why you've been icing after practice."

Cole crossed his arms. "Who told you that?"

"Your gait did."

A rookie near the water cooler coughed into his fist to hide a laugh.

Cole stepped closer. "I asked you a question, assistant."

"And I'm telling you what I can actually prove." I pointed at the blue mat. "Get on the mat, or ask Dr. Harper for a different student assistant. I have three evaluations after yours."

The room went quiet enough for me to hear skate blades scraping the concrete in the tunnel.

"Sloane," my brother warned.

Jace Mercer limped over from the taping tables, the old hinged brace under his sweatpants making a faint click with each step. He had torn his right MCL and meniscus two years earlier during a playoff game and had spent nearly a season getting back to full speed. He hated the brace. He hated anyone mentioning the injury even more.

He put a hand on my shoulder.

"Back off, Cole. She's just helping out."

I stepped away from Jace's hand.

"I'm not just helping out. I'm a kinesiology student assigned to the athletic-training practicum. Dr. Harper approved my rotation."

Jace ignored me.

"She doesn't need your attitude," he told Cole.

"And I don't need my brother explaining my job," I said.

That earned an uglier silence.

Jace had spent twenty years calling interference protection. He picked my high school curfew, screened my dates, argued with my first driving instructor, and once emailed a professor because I came home upset over a grade. When I earned the Westlake rehabilitation scholarship, he celebrated by telling everyone his little sister was joining him on campus.

Not Sloane earned it.

Jace got Sloane in.

Cole looked between us.

"Fine," he said. "Show me the hip problem."

I asked him to perform three controlled single-leg squats while I filmed from the side. On the second rep, his pelvis dropped and his torso twisted to protect the right side.

"There."

He watched the playback.

His expression changed by maybe one degree.

"Could be fatigue."

"Could be. That's why I flag it to the certified athletic trainer instead of pretending I'm licensed. But if you keep skating through the compensation, you'll move the stress somewhere less forgiving."

The heavy door opened.

Dr. Mara Harper, Westlake's head athletic trainer, entered with a tablet under one arm.

"What did she catch?"

Cole handed her my phone.

Dr. Harper watched the clip twice.

"Good eye, Mercer. Cole, reduced lateral load today. We'll reassess after mobility work."

Cole looked at me.

"So I have to do the mat drills."

"Tragic," I said.

The rookie laughed openly this time.

Practice began an hour later.

I worked along the boards under Dr. Harper's supervision, logging minor complaints, cleaning equipment, and helping with recovery stations. Every few minutes, I caught Jace looking toward me instead of watching the drill.

"If you stare any harder, you're going to skate into the bench," I told him when he came off for water.

"Cole likes testing new people. Mason likes trouble. Luca hates losing. I don't want you getting dragged into team drama."

"Then stop dragging me into it."

He frowned. "I'm your brother."

"That's a relationship, not a job title."

A puck struck the boards beside us with a crack.

"Heads up, Doc."

Mason Reed coasted to a stop, dark hair wet with sweat and a grin that suggested rules existed mostly to entertain him.

"Student assistant," I corrected.

"Doc is shorter."

"Wrong is also shorter than accurate."

His grin widened.

Behind him, Luca Bennett skated a tight turn near center ice. He moved with the kind of control that made people stop talking. He was Westlake's transfer winger and the player Jace hated most in the conference.

Two years ago, Luca had delivered the legal check that sent Jace into the boards and started the long rehab on his knee. Jace had watched the replay enough times to memorize every frame. The referees had ruled it clean. He had never cared.

"Don't work with Luca alone," Jace muttered.

"Why? Does his hamstring know you're enemies?"

"I'm serious."

"So am I. Medical care isn't a revenge list."

Cole skated past and heard enough to stop.

"Mercer."

Jace turned. "What?"

"Go run your own drill. You're watching your sister more than the puck."

Jace's face hardened. "Stay out of it."

"You're the co-captain. If you lose focus because she speaks to another player, it becomes team business."

I should have appreciated the intervention.

Instead, I looked at Cole.

"I can tell him myself."

Cole raised both hands and backed away.

"Noted."

That was the first useful thing any of them did all morning.

After practice, Dr. Harper reviewed my documentation.

"You were right about Cole's hip. You were also right not to diagnose beyond your scope. Keep doing both."

She showed me how she converted my observation into an official treatment note. My name stayed in the student section. Her certification sat on the final plan. The distinction mattered. I was here to learn how good systems worked, not to play doctor because I had a sharp eye.

When I returned to the mat, Cole had finished every assigned mobility drill.

Jace was waiting near the door.

"I talked to Coach Miller," he said. "You can move to hydrotherapy this week. Less contact with the roster."

My stomach dropped.

"You did what?"

"I'm helping."

"No. You're rearranging my placement because you don't like me being around your teammates."

"Sloane—"

"Call Coach back."

He blinked.

"Tell him I never asked to move."

"I'm not doing that."

His hand closed around my elbow as if he could steer me toward the hallway.

"Let go of her."

Cole's voice was quiet.

It still stopped Jace cold.

Cole stepped off the mat and looked directly at my brother.

"She's assigned here. If Dr. Harper changes it, that's medical staff business. Not yours."

Jace released me.

I didn't hide behind Cole.

I faced my brother.

"Go ice your knee, Jace. And stay out of my workspace."

For once, he had no order ready.

I turned away before he found one.

Cole was already watching me, the earlier contempt gone from his face.

Something more dangerous had replaced it.

Respect.
