Chapter 3

At eight o’clock Monday morning, I signed my employment contract.

“Lead Conservator, Genetic Archiving Project,” David read from across his desk. “Does the title work for you?”

“Perfectly.”

He unfolded the plans for the institute’s east wing. “The Amazonian ferns are losing moisture by noon. The contractors want another row of ground-level misters.”

“That will encourage root rot.” I rotated the blueprint. “Add reflective shading to the south glass and force airflow over the canopy instead of through the beds. Then schedule a finer mist every four hours.”

“Will the orchids lose their morning light?”

“Not if the panels sit at forty-five degrees.”

David wrote it down without interrupting or asking whether I was certain. The simple respect felt almost extravagant.

He took an identification badge from his desk and handed it to me. My photograph appeared beside my name, not beneath Michael’s company logo or the word SPOUSE.

“The archive team meets at nine,” he said. “I told them you have final authority over cultivation protocols.”

“You told them before I signed?”

“I hired you for your judgment. If I planned to overrule it for convenience, I would have saved us both the paperwork.”

I clipped the badge to my jacket. The gesture was small, but it restored something I had not realized I was still waiting to reclaim.

My phone buzzed with messages forwarded by Marcus Hale, my family lawyer.

Michael’s first read: The emergency sitter quit. Leo screamed for three hours.

The second: He needs that pressure massage you do.

The third: Stop playing games and call me.

“Trouble?” David asked.

“An adult having a tantrum.”

I replied through the portal: Follow the deep-pressure steps on page forty-two. If Leo refuses physical contact, offer the compression vest in his closet and reduce sound and light.

Then I messaged Marcus. “Keep all communication in the portal. No direct calls unless there is a verified emergency.”

“Understood,” he replied.

By two that afternoon, Michael’s domestic crisis had become a corporate one.

I was transferring a rare ghost orchid when Marcus called. “His firm served us with a cease-and-desist. They claim you maliciously interfered with business operations.”

“What failed?”

“They planted the flagship roof using commercial topsoil. Fifty thousand dollars in rare vegetation is dying.”

“The nitrogen concentration burned the roots. My revocation notice explicitly warned them not to proceed without a licensed soil matrix.”

“Their project manager calls it sabotage.”

“Refusing to surrender my property is not sabotage. Ignoring a written compliance warning is negligence.”

Marcus made a quiet sound of agreement. “Michael also emailed an offer to double your monthly allowance if you send the pH adjustments.”

I laughed once. “Allowance?”

“He still believes you’re a dependent.”

“Send his counsel my consulting rate and licensing terms. Five years, nonexclusive, with my authorship disclosed on every public filing. No access to the underlying genetic archive.”

The terms were not improvised retaliation. They matched the rates I had charged two university partners and included independent safety review, audit access, and termination for misuse. Michael had seen my work as free because he slept beside its creator. The market had never agreed with him.

“That is considerably more than his offer.”

“It is considerably less than the value of seven years of research.”

After the call, I finished settling the orchid. Leaving Michael did not require me to destroy his firm. It required him to pay for work he had treated as his by marital entitlement.

That evening, I unpacked technical manuals in the small third-floor apartment. A school notification appeared while I was lining up field journals.

Behavioral Incident Report—Leo Mills.

At lunch, he had panicked when someone packed his food in a crinkling disposable bag instead of his silent silicone containers. He had crawled under the cafeteria table, kicked a chair, and covered his ears until the counselor cleared the room.

I pictured his red face and shaking hands. Every instinct told me to call, apologize, and restore the system that had kept him comfortable.

But Michael had insisted I exaggerated Leo’s needs. Chloe had said love meant giving him whatever he wanted. If I quietly repaired every consequence, neither adult would learn to care for him.

I wrote to the school counselor instead: Please follow Leo’s documented sensory plan. Today is his father’s custodial day, so contact him about supplies. Copy me on the incident record.

The reply came quickly. We have contacted Mr. Mills and will use a quiet room tomorrow if needed.

The counselor called five minutes later to confirm the plan. She explained that Leo had recovered enough to finish lunch in her office and had identified the noise as the trigger without prompting.

“That matters,” I said. “Please praise him for naming the problem after he was calm. Do not frame the quiet room as punishment.”

“Would you like us to keep spare containers at school?”

“Yes. Ask Michael to deliver two tomorrow, since the containers at his house remain available to him. I will reimburse half the cost through the portal.”

It was the sort of practical exchange I used to manage alone, invisible to everyone. This time, the school recorded the request, Michael received it, and responsibility had a name other than mine.

I set down the phone. Trusting trained staff was not abandoning my child. It was refusing to be the only functioning adult in his life.

In the kitchen, I opened my canvas tote and found a blue silicone lunch container at the bottom. Leo must have slipped it in when I packed my field supplies before the party. His name, written in my handwriting, curved across the lid.

Pain pressed beneath my ribs.

I washed the container, photographed it, and sent Michael a portal message offering to leave it with school reception. No apology. No rescue mission. A practical solution, documented and contained.

Before he answered, my phone emitted the piercing double chime reserved for school emergencies.

I accepted the call.

“Mrs. Mills?” Nurse Davis spoke over a child’s ragged crying. “Leo is in the clinic with hives across his neck, and his breathing is becoming irregular. A woman who identified herself as his new mother brought him clothing that triggered the reaction.”

I was already reaching for my keys when the nurse added, “Her name is Chloe Adams.”
