Chapter 4

The burn clinic smelled like antiseptic and stale coffee, same as every place I'd been forced into lately. A nurse named Priya unwrapped the gauze on my hands, tsking at the blisters that hadn't healed right. "These need a different ointment," she said. "You're not supposed to get them wet."

"I know," I said. I didn't explain how hard that was, washing dishes with hands wrapped like a mummy's.

She stepped out to grab supplies, leaving a folder open on the counter. I wasn't trying to look. I was just sitting there, staring at nothing, and my eyes landed on the tab.

Patterson, Azrael.

My whole body went still.

I knew I shouldn't. I knew if Priya walked back in and caught me, there'd be questions. But my hand moved anyway, careful with the bandages, and turned the folder toward me.

Congenital azoospermia. Complete. Irreversible.

I read it once and didn't understand the weight of it. I read it twice and started to. I read it a third time, my finger tracing the words like that would make them more real, and something in my chest cracked open.

He couldn't have children. Not now. Not ever. Not with anyone.

Which meant the baby under Lydia's hand, the one she rubbed for cameras and doctors and grieving mothers-in-law on the phone — that baby wasn't his.

It had never been his.

My hands weren't shaking from the burns anymore. Priya came back in and found me sitting very straight, very calm, folder closed and pushed back exactly where it had been.

"You okay, hon?" she asked, re-wrapping my palm.

"Fine," I said. "Just tired."

I wasn't tired. I was wide awake for the first time in five years.

---

I didn't say anything. Not to Azrael, not to Lydia, not to the housekeeper who probably already suspected more than she let on. I'd learned in that cell block what happens to information the second you open your mouth about it — it stops being a weapon and starts being a warning you've handed to the other side.

So I watched instead.

I learned Lydia's schedule the way I'd learned the guards' rotations. She took calls in the study most nights, door mostly closed, voice pitched low. She thought the penthouse walls were thick enough. She thought nobody paid that kind of attention to her anymore, now that I was just the maid who used to be somebody.

She was wrong about that.

I bought a cheap phone at a drugstore three blocks over, paid cash, and hid it in the lining of my coat. I waited four days before the right night came — Azrael out at a dinner, Lydia alone, the study door cracked two inches, just enough.

I stood in the hallway with my back against the wall and my thumb on the record button and I listened to her voice change.

It happened the second the door clicked and she thought she was alone with just a phone call. The syrup drained right out of her. What was left underneath was flat and fast and businesslike.

"Tell me the Whitfield contract went through," she said.

A man's voice, low, satisfied. Marcus Oliver. I knew that voice from board dinners, from the way he always adjusted his cufflinks like they itched.

"Signed this morning," he said. "Rival firm's thrilled. That's the third piece of IP we've moved this quarter. Nobody's noticed yet."

"They won't. He's not looking." A short, sharp laugh from Lydia, nothing like the breathy little sounds she made for doctors and mothers-in-law. "He's so busy punishing his little ex-girlfriend that he can't see his own house burning down."

"You're a piece of work, baby," Marcus said, and there was something in the way he said it — easy, familiar — that told me exactly what kind of relationship this was. Not business. Not just business.

"I'm the piece of work keeping this whole thing standing," she said. "He thinks I'm carrying his miracle. Let him keep thinking that."

My thumb stayed steady on the button. My breathing didn't. I made myself count — one, two, three — the way I used to count ceiling tiles at night in my cell, just to keep my hands from doing something stupid.

"You sure the doctor won't say anything?" Marcus asked.

"He's paid enough to forget how to talk," Lydia said. "Just like you're paid enough to keep smiling at board meetings and signing whatever I tell you to sign."

Marcus laughed again, low, and said something about dinner Thursday, and I heard the particular rustle of a woman shifting in a chair, settling in, comfortable, victorious.

I backed away from the door one slow step at a time, phone still recording, until I hit the far end of the hall and could breathe without the sound of it catching.

In my room, I stopped the recording and sat on the edge of the cot, turning the phone over in my bandaged hands like it might combust.

I thought about Azrael and his flat, cold eyes. His folder on the desk. His silence when my hands were burned raw.

I thought about the girl in the rooftop photo, laughing, so sure of everything.

Then I hid the phone inside a rolled sock at the bottom of my bag, and I went back to keeping my list.
