Chapter 1

The wedding was imminent, but my fiancé wanted to marry the female college student I had been sponsoring.

It was all because she said her mother, back in the countryside, was gravely ill and hoped to see her daughter married before she passed.

But during the years when Gregory Muller was at his lowest, it was me who stood by his side, supporting him without complaint. This wedding was supposed to be mine.

When I confronted Gregory, my eyes red with frustration, questioning why he was turning his back on me, he only looked at me with reproach.

"You can't just let Lucy marry some random guy, can you? She treats you like a sister and yet you're being so selfish and heartless!"

He was so sure I wouldn't leave him and even had the audacity to ask me to wait for him for another two years.

On the day of his wedding to Lucy Mendez, Gregory was upset by my absence.

But his friends quickly informed him, "Rosalie got married. She's on her honeymoon with her new husband."

——

I called my mother that day. "Mom, I’m coming home. Let’s work together."

Surprised, she asked, "You’re not marrying Gregory?"

After a brief silence, I replied firmly, "No. I don’t want him." Why? Because my fiance, Gregory, was marrying another woman.

The door to my room opened abruptly and Lucy walked in with a smile. "Rosalie, will you come with me to pick out my wedding dress?"

I frowned. "Do you not know how to knock before entering someone else’s room?"

At my words, Lucy’s expression crumpled into one of feigned hurt. "Rosalie, I was just too excited. Please don’t be mad..."

I laughed coldly to myself. What a tired trick, feigning innocence. She truly was overjoyed.

“You don’t need to apologize,” I replied dismissively.

Before I could say more, a low voice came from behind her.

"You’re about to become the mistress of this house. You can do as you please."

It was Gregory.

Lucy flushed with embarrassment. "Brother Gregory, don’t say that. If Rosalie gets upset, she might refuse to come with me to choose the dress."

"She can come if she wants or not," Gregory replied coldly, wrapping his arm around Lucy’s shoulders. "I’ll go with you."

As I watched them leave, it felt like a lifetime had passed.

Just three months ago, it was me who was planning a wedding with Gregory.

We had met in college and fallen in love at first sight.

For him, I defied my parents and stayed in Edinburgh after graduation. We rented a shabby ten-square-meter apartment, waking at six every morning to catch the subway and returning home at nine at night.

Those days were hard, but we were happy.

Back then, Gregory promised to propose once he made a name for himself.

Later, I used my connections to help him start his business. When things stabilized, he promised we’d get married.

Two years later, when he became a multimillionaire, he promised me a grand wedding.

Early this year, he finally proposed.

At the time, I thought we were set to grow old together.

But then Lucy appeared and I realized how foolish I had been to silently sacrifice everything.

Lucy was a college student I anonymously sponsored. Somehow, she found out my address and came to Edinburgh after graduating.

Crying, she told me she had no one else to turn to and begged to stay with me for a few days.

Gregory, seeing her pitiful state, not only let her stay but also arranged an internship for her at his company.

At first, he complained often about her.

"A country bumpkin. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t bother with her."

But over time, I noticed him growing more and more attached to her.

Although he often scolded her for being clumsy and out of her depth, he personally rewrote her reports, ignored his colleagues’ gossip, drove her to and from work, let her nap in his office and even went out of his way to smooth over her workplace relationships.
