Chapter 4

I had every intention of pulling Milo out of Westbridge Academy this morning. My hand was literally hovering over the withdrawal form when Principal Helena Crest delivered her ultimatum. If I removed my son before he completed a mandatory on-site behavioral observation, the school would officially flag us as "non-compliant with evaluation" in their report to Child Welfare.

I couldn't afford to hand them another weapon to use against my family. To avoid giving them any new excuses, I agreed to stay in the campus library in a separate building, waiting out the clock. Before I left the classroom, I looked Ms. Gable directly in the eye and gave her one explicit instruction: Milo’s black wristband was a prescribed medical device. Under no circumstances was anyone allowed to remove it.

Less than an hour later, my phone vibrated against the library table.

"Ms. Vale," the school secretary said, her voice clipped and professional. "Milo had another episode."

I didn't wait for her to offer details. I dropped my phone into my bag, sprinted out of the library, and crossed the outdoor courtyard to the early childhood wing in seconds.

When I reached the classroom, Ms. Gable was hovering in the hallway, clutching her clipboard tight against her chest.

"Where is my son?" I demanded, scanning the empty corridor.

"He is de-escalating," she said defensively, shifting her weight to block my path to a heavy, solid wood door. "Theo snatched Milo’s bracelet during free play. He told the class that everyone should share. When Milo lunged to grab it back—which was highly inappropriate—I placed the item on my desk as a calm-down consequence."

My chest tightened, a cold dread pooling in my stomach. "You took off his medical seal."

"I removed a distraction," she corrected, raising her chin. "Unfortunately, while I was turned around, Theo took it from my desk. The other children egged him on, and he stepped on it. The plastic broke into pieces."

"Where is Milo?" I repeated, my tone dropping to a dangerous hush.

Ms. Gable flushed, tapping her pen against the clipboard. "He completely lost his temper. His temperature spiked, he covered his ears like he couldn't handle the noise, and he started making these awful, aggressive sounds. Like a dog growling. I applied yesterday's aggression protocol. I couldn't let him disrupt naptime for the other students, so I put him in the quiet room."

She pointed her pen at her behavioral chart. "I recorded that he refused to self-regulate. We waited until he threw up and stopped responding to my knocks before calling you."

I shoved her aside. I grabbed the handle of the solid wood door and threw it open.

The quiet room was nothing but a windowless closet lined with blue gym mats. The air inside was stifling, thick with the smell of panic and sick.

Milo was curled into a tight ball in the darkest corner.

I dropped to my knees. "Baby."

He flinched violently at the sound of my voice. When he looked up, the sight of his face nearly brought me to my knees a second time. His skin burned with a terrifying, unnatural fever. The edges of his dark pupils had bled into a glowing, pale silver. Stripped of his suppression seal, his heightened hearing was picking up every agonizing sound in the building, and his small body was vibrating with the raw instinct of a terrified pup.

He didn't cry. Instead, he immediately hid his hands behind his back, pressing himself harder into the corner.

"I was good, Mommy," he croaked, his voice raw and shaking. "I didn't bite anybody."

That sentence gutted me. It was worse than any physical wound. My five-year-old son was experiencing the terrifying rush of an unsuppressed aura, and his only concern was proving to these humans that he wasn't a monster.

I pushed down my fury. I used the absolute minimum of my Luna presence, pressing a fraction of my commanding aura against his frantic senses to suppress his early-shift reaction. His silver eyes widened, recognizing the absolute authority of his mother's scent, and his violent shivering finally began to slow.

I stripped off my denim jacket, wrapped it securely around his shoulders, and pulled him against my chest. He felt like a furnace. A thin cut marked his left wrist where the shattered seal had bitten into his skin.

I carried him out of the closet and into the hallway. Ms. Gable took a step back, finally looking alarmed by his physical state.

"Get the school nurse," I ordered.

"He just needs to learn to control himself," Ms. Gable stammered, crossing her arms again. "We use the quiet room for all—"

"A five-year-old with a fever was locked alone for how many minutes?" I asked, cutting her off.

The hallway went dead silent. The teacher opened her mouth, but the absolute venom in my voice kept her completely paralyzed. Nobody dared to answer.

When the nurse hurried down the corridor a moment later, I refused to let her take Milo from my arms. I sat on a bench, keeping him secured against my side.

"Use normal ice packs," I instructed the nurse. "Take his temperature. Document his exact isolation time. Document the vomiting. Write down every single minute of this incident."

While the nurse nervously fumbled with her thermometer, I pulled out my phone and dialed the encrypted Pack line. I turned my shoulder to shield the screen and spoke in a rapid whisper to the Pack healer. I reported the fever, the silver eyes, and the shattered seal.

The healer didn't sugarcoat the situation. "An Alpha pup's first shift is years away, Nadia. But losing total scent suppression, combined with extreme fear, can force the body to initiate early changes. That quiet room... the time he spent in there unresponsive means he endured his first loss of control entirely alone."

I ended the call, my jaw locked tight. I wanted to release my aura and shatter every window in this wing. But I held it back. I needed the nurse to finish writing the medical report. I needed an unalterable chain of evidence that no administrator could ever erase.

I stood up, adjusting my grip on Milo’s waist. As I stepped past the threshold of Ms. Gable’s classroom, a new scent hit the back of my throat.

I froze.

It wasn't the smell of cheap floor cleaner, and it wasn't the scent of human children. It was a sharp, distinct wolf scent. A stranger.

I flared my nostrils, tracking the invisible trail. It was heavily concentrated near the teacher's desk—right where the broken bracelet had been kept—and it trailed directly out the side exit toward the adult parking lot.

Someone else had been here. Someone who wasn't human had approached the classroom the moment Milo’s seal shattered.

"Ms. Vale," Ms. Gable said, holding out a clear plastic evidence bag. "Here are the pieces of his bracelet. As you can see, the plastic simply gave way."

I snatched the bag from her hand. Through the clear plastic, I counted the heavy black links. One, two, three, four, five, six.

The healer had been extremely specific when he forged the band. It required seven interlocking pieces to contain an Alpha-heir's aura.

The missing link was the one that had dug into Milo’s skin. The piece coated in his blood and carrying his raw, unfiltered scent.

Principal Helena Crest strode down the hallway, her heels striking the linoleum with practiced authority. She took one look at the situation and put on her diplomatic, polished smile.

"Ms. Vale, let's not overreact," Helena said smoothly. "I understand you are upset about the bracelet, but this is simply a property dispute between children. We can handle this privately."

I looked from the bag of broken links to the principal's perfectly composed face.

"There will be no private meetings," I said, my voice echoing off the metal lockers. "I am demanding an emergency board hearing tomorrow morning. Furthermore, I am issuing a formal, written ban on the destruction of any security footage, visitor logs, or door access records from this building. You will preserve everything."

Helena’s smile vanished. "You are making a massive mistake."

"The mistake was trusting you," I replied.

I turned my back on them and walked out the double doors, carrying my son into the cold afternoon air. Milo rested his hot cheek against my collarbone, his breathing finally starting to even out as we reached the car.

I stared across the empty parking lot, my grip tightening on his small frame. The stranger's scent lingered faintly on the asphalt, pointing directly toward the main road. We had stripped away our titles and lived in the shadows to protect him. We thought blending in with humans would keep him invisible.

But looking at the missing link in the plastic bag, I knew the terrifying truth. The very place I thought would hide him had just served him up to our enemies.
