Chapter 2

I almost didn't go.

I stood in the lobby of Vance Group headquarters for a full minute before I made myself move toward the elevators. The folder in my hands felt heavier than it should have—just documents, contracts Julian had left on the kitchen counter that morning, the ones Rosa had pointed at with a questioning look and a gesture toward the door. *He'll need these.* I'd understood. I always understood.

That didn't mean I wanted to be here.

The elevator doors opened on the fourteenth floor and I stepped out into the familiar cold of the executive wing. All glass and steel and controlled light, the kind of space that was designed to make you feel small on purpose. Julian's assistant, Marcus, was at his desk near the double doors. He looked up when he saw me, and something crossed his face—something quick and uncomfortable that he smoothed over almost immediately.

"Mrs. Vance." He stood. "Mr. Vance is... in a meeting right now."

I held up the folder and wrote on my notepad: *He left these at home. I'll just leave them with you.*

Marcus glanced at the glass wall behind him.

I followed his gaze before he could stop me.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass, I could see Julian's office clearly. The long conference table, the city skyline beyond the windows, and Julian himself—standing near the far end of the table, leaning slightly forward, his whole posture different from how I ever saw it at home. Relaxed. Open. The tension he carried in his shoulders like armor had simply... dissolved.

He was laughing.

I hadn't seen him laugh in so long that for a moment I just stood there, almost confused by the sight of it. The way his head tilted back slightly. The easy movement of it.

Then I saw the woman across from him.

She was beautiful in a way that was entirely effortless—dark hair, a tailored ivory blazer, the kind of presence that filled a room without trying. She was saying something, gesturing with one hand, and Julian was watching her the way you watch someone whose every word matters to you.

I knew her face.

Not from meeting her. From a photograph I'd found three years ago, tucked into the back of Julian's desk drawer when I was looking for a pen. A photograph I'd held for exactly four seconds before placing it back exactly as I'd found it, because even then, I already understood things I wasn't ready to name.

Victoria.

*She's marrying you because you look like her, Elena. You're a placeholder.*

My sister Claire's voice came back to me the way it always did—sharp and certain, the way she said everything. We'd been standing outside the church. I was in my wedding dress, holding a small bouquet of white peonies, and Claire had gripped my arm and looked at me with those serious eyes of hers.

*He's not over her. He's never been over her. You need to know that before you walk through those doors.*

I had walked through those doors anyway.

I remembered standing at the altar while Julian recited his vows in a voice that was steady and measured and completely empty of anything warm. *I, Julian Vance, take you, Elena Hart...* He'd looked at me the whole time, but his eyes had that quality they always had—present and absent simultaneously, like a window with the light behind it switched off. No *love*. No *cherish*. He'd said the words the officiant required and nothing more, and I had told myself it was just his way, that he wasn't a man who performed emotion for an audience, that what mattered was what came after.

Three years of what came after had taught me exactly what that was worth.

Julian looked up.

Through the glass, his eyes found me—and I watched it happen in real time. The warmth that had been on his face a moment before simply switched off. Like a door closing. He said something brief to Victoria, then straightened and moved toward the office entrance.

I made myself stand still.

He opened the glass door and stepped into the corridor. Up close, the tiredness was back in his face—that familiar absence. He looked at the folder in my hands, then at me.

"What are you doing here?"

His voice was flat. Not angry. Just... flat, the way a surface is flat. Nothing to hold onto.

I held out the folder and wrote on my notepad: *You left the Hargrove contracts at home. Marcus said you needed them this morning.*

He took the folder without looking at the note. Without looking at me. He flipped it open, scanned the top page, and tucked it under his arm.

No thank you. No acknowledgment. Just the transaction, completed.

Behind him, Victoria had appeared in the doorway of the office. She leaned one shoulder against the glass frame with the ease of someone who had stood in that doorway many times before. Her eyes moved over me with open curiosity—not hostile, not cruel. Something worse than that. The calm assessment of someone who already knows the outcome.

"Is this your wife?" she asked Julian. Her voice was low and clear, and I caught enough of the shape of the words to understand. "The one who can't hear?"

Something shifted in Julian's jaw. A small tightening.

"Yes," he said. "She's... convenient."

*Convenient.*

The word landed without drama. No sharp edges, no explosion. Just a quiet, thorough settling, like sediment dropping to the bottom of still water. I felt it move through me and kept my face exactly where it was.

Victoria smiled then—and it was a genuine smile, which somehow made it worse. She pushed off the doorframe and extended her hand toward me. Gracious. Unhurried.

"It's nice to finally meet you," she said, making sure I could read her lips. "Julian's told me so much about you."

I shook her hand.

Her grip was warm and firm and entirely confident, the grip of a woman who had never once questioned whether she belonged in a room. She held my gaze for a moment longer than necessary—long enough for me to understand what she wasn't saying. Long enough for me to see, clearly and completely, what I was standing in the middle of.

Julian hadn't stopped loving her.

He'd never stopped. Not when he'd married me, not in three years of silence, not once. And Victoria—standing here in his office, laughing with him, watching me with that calm and knowing smile—Victoria knew it too.

I was the placeholder. Claire had been right. I had just spent three years refusing to let myself believe it.

"It's nice to meet you as well," I said.

I don't know if my voice came out level. I couldn't hear it. But I held her gaze, and I held Julian's for exactly one second afterward—long enough to see the discomfort flicker across his face before it disappeared again—and then I turned and walked back toward the elevators.

I didn't look back.

The elevator doors closed, and I stood alone inside the small mirrored box, watching my own reflection stare back at me. My face was composed. My hands were steady. The folder was gone, delivered, the errand complete.

*Convenient.*

The elevator descended.

And somewhere between the fourteenth floor and the lobby, I made a decision I didn't yet have words for—just the quiet, certain feeling of something that had been bending for a very long time finally going still.
