Chapter 5

Tripp moved into the guest room.

Not temporarily. Camden cleared out the closet and installed a small bed with navy sheets. He hung curtains. Put books on the shelf that looked like they'd never been opened. Made it look like a child's room even though the child who lived there didn't act like any child I'd ever seen.

Tripp didn't run. Didn't shout. Didn't leave toys scattered across the floor.

He sat.

He watched.

At breakfast, he'd take the chair closest to Camden. His back straight. His hands folded. He'd eat his cereal one spoonful at a time, his eyes moving between his father's face and mine like he was taking notes.

I tried.

God, I tried.

"Do you want to watch cartoons?" I asked the first morning.

He looked at me for three long seconds. "No."

"Do you like to draw? I could get you some paper—"

"No."

Camden's hand found my shoulder. Squeezed gently. "He's adjusting. Give him time."

But it wasn't adjustment I saw in Tripp's face. It was assessment.

Like he was measuring me for something.

The second day, I made lunch. Sandwiches cut into triangles the way my mother used to do for me. I set one in front of Tripp.

He stared at it.

"It's turkey," I said. Too bright. Too eager. "And cheese. Is that okay?"

He pushed the plate two inches to the left. Precise. Deliberate.

"You live here," he said. Not a question. A statement.

I nodded. "Yes."

"Why?"

Camden looked up from his laptop. "Tripp—"

"She's not my mother." Still that flat voice. No anger. Just fact.

My throat closed.

Camden stood. Came around the table. Crouched beside Tripp's chair. "Tessa is very important to me. She's going to have a baby. Your brother or sister. We're all going to be a family."

Tripp's eyes slid to my stomach. Then back to Camden's face.

"My mother is in London," he said.

Camden's jaw tightened. "Your mother is here in New York. You'll see her this weekend."

Something flickered across Tripp's face. Too fast to name. Then it was gone.

He picked up half the sandwich. Took a small, mechanical bite.

Camden straightened. Looked at me over Tripp's head. His expression said: *See? It's fine.*

But my hands were shaking under the table.

That night, I heard them talking through the wall.

Camden's voice low and patient. "I know this is hard. But Tessa is kind. She wants to know you."

Silence.

"Don't you want a brother or sister?"

More silence.

Then Tripp's small voice, so quiet I almost missed it: "I want you and Mom together."

"Buddy, that's not—"

"You're supposed to be together."

I pressed my hand to my mouth. Backed away from the wall.

Climbed into bed and stared at the ceiling until Camden finally came in hours later.

He slid under the covers. Pulled me close.

"He'll come around," Camden whispered into my hair. "Kids are resilient."

I didn't answer.

Because I kept seeing Tripp's face. That flat, empty stare.

And I kept thinking: *He's not adjusting. He's planning.*

The hospital called on Thursday. A follow-up appointment. Routine check on the baby.

Camden had meetings he couldn't move. "I'll reschedule," he said immediately.

"It's fine. It's just a quick scan."

He hesitated. Looked at Tripp sitting motionless on the couch with a book he wasn't reading. "I don't want you going alone."

"I'll be fine."

"Take a car. I'll have one waiting downstairs."

I nodded. Anything to get out of the apartment. Away from Tripp's watchful silence. Away from Camden's suffocating concern.

The appointment took twenty minutes. The baby was fine. Heartbeat strong. Everything progressing normally.

I stood on the Midtown sidewalk afterward, the ultrasound photo in my purse, and felt nothing.

Just empty.

I texted Camden. *Done. Heading home.*

His response came immediately. *Wait there. Tripp and I will meet you. Ten minutes.*

I looked up at the hospital entrance. At the people streaming past. At the traffic rushing by in an endless gray river.

Ten minutes.

I could wait ten minutes.

I moved to the curb. Found a spot away from the crowd. The light was red. Cars blurred past. Taxis. Delivery trucks. Bikes weaving between lanes.

I heard footsteps behind me.

Small footsteps.

"Tripp?" I started to turn.

Two small hands pressed into the small of my back.

Not a shove exactly. Just steady pressure. Firm. Deliberate.

I stumbled forward.

Off the curb.

Into the street.

The delivery truck's horn screamed.

I saw the driver's face. His mouth open. His hands wrenching the wheel.

Then impact.

Metal and bone and the sound of something breaking that might have been me.

I hit the pavement.

Pain exploded through my side. My head. Everywhere.

Voices shouting. Footsteps running. Someone screaming.

I tried to move. Couldn't.

Tried to breathe. Couldn't.

My hand found my stomach. Pressed there. Felt wetness.

Blood.

So much blood.

I turned my head. Saw small navy shoes standing on the curb. Perfectly still.

Tripp looked down at me.

His face showed nothing.

No fear. No regret. No surprise.

Just that same flat, empty stare.

Like he was watching something he'd already known would happen.

Sirens wailed in the distance.

Someone was holding my hand. A stranger. Telling me to stay awake. Stay with them.

But I was so tired.

And the last thing I saw before the darkness took me was Tripp.

Standing on the curb.

Watching.

Waiting to see if his equation had finally balanced.
