His Signature on My Freedom

7.9 / 10.0
For three years, I kept our marriage a secret while my elite architect husband, Grayson Vaughn, repeatedly broke his promise of a wedding reception. Twelve times, he abandoned me for his close friend, New York socialite Sienna Ford, leaving me in an empty wedding dress or waiting in vain. Dismissing my tears as mere scenes, Grayson insisted I was his wife and Sienna was just a friend. But after the twelfth broken vow, I’ve had enough. I hand him the divorce papers: it’s time to end this.

His Signature on My Freedom Chapter 1

My star architect husband, Grayson Vaughn, and I have been secretly married for three years.

To appease New York socialite Sienna Ford, he’d promise me a proper wedding reception—a gesture meant to keep me quiet.

Twelve times, he promised. Twelve times, he broke that promise.

The first time, Sienna needed an escort for an important charity gala on Wall Street.

I stood alone in a custom wedding dress in an empty venue, staring at the half-hearted apology glowing on my phone screen.

The second time, Sienna had a meltdown.

He was halfway to picking me up when he spun the car around and drove back to his Manhattan penthouse to comfort her.

After that, every celebration he promised was derailed by some new crisis involving Sienna.

I cried. I protested.

But Grayson’s answer was always the same. "Sienna's just a friend. You're my wife. Don't make a scene."

After the twelfth broken promise, I was done.

I pushed a divorce agreement across the table to him.

"Let's end this."

Grayson Vaughn skipped our eleventh planned wedding celebration for a gala celebrating his firm’s latest architectural award.

Sienna Ford had leveraged her family's connections to organize the event for him at Rockefeller Center.

At the party, investors and media alike assumed Sienna was his girlfriend.

"Mr. Vaughn and Miss Ford are a match made in heaven. Childhood sweethearts, you know!"

"What century are we in? Nothing wrong with celebrating the happy couple a little early!"

"Exactly! A toast to Mr. Vaughn and Miss Ford!"

Their words cut like shards of glass.

And I, his legally-wedded but never-acknowledged wife of three years, could only shrink into a corner with my champagne, watching as he pulled Sienna into an intimate embrace under the glare of the spotlights.

After the gala, I waited on the curb outside the hotel like a dirty secret, all to protect his “single star architect” persona.

A black vintage Porsche purred to a stop. The passenger window rolled down to reveal Sienna’s smug face.

Grayson glanced at me, his tone laced with its usual entitlement.

"Rachel, just take a cab home. I have to get Sienna back, she sprained her ankle earlier."

I dropped my gaze, saying nothing. The deep winter wind bit at my fingertips, turning them white.

Grayson was a control freak and a germaphobe; he never let anyone touch his prized vintage car.

Once, an oversight in one of his proposals had offended a major, notoriously difficult client.

To save his project, I had to entertain the client, drinking until I made myself sick.

Afterward, he’d frowned at me in disgust. "You reek of alcohol. Find your own way back."

That day, he left me on a bone-chilling street corner.

I trudged for nearly two hours in heels before I finally managed to flag down a cab.

And now, here was Sienna, with her conveniently "sprained ankle," nestled in his passenger seat with his tailored suit jacket draped over her shoulders.

So his rules, his germaphobia—they only ever applied to me.

A bitter smile touched my lips, and I fought to keep my voice steady.

"Is our Hamptons party still on for tomorrow?"

His grip on the steering wheel tightened for a second.

"I'll have to take care of Sienna tonight. I probably won't make it back by tomorrow. Let's reschedule."

An icy knot formed in my chest, but I managed a slight nod. "Alright."

After a beat, I pulled a stack of papers from my bag and handed them to him.

"Sign this. Just some routine paperwork for the firm."

Maybe it was guilt, but Grayson didn't even glance at it.

He grabbed a pen and scrawled his name.

His eyes met mine through the car window.

"I'll buy you your favorite cronut from that place in SoHo when I come home tomorrow," he promised.

With that, he sped off.

By the time Grayson got home, it was noon the next day. There were no cronuts.

He stood before the mirror, shrugging off the suit jacket, its lapels reeking of Sienna’s perfume.

He froze, his head tilting slightly as his eyes found my reflection in the mirror, where I sat on the edge of the bed.
