Chapter 5

ISLA’s POV

Matteo's ashes sat in the urn on the table, silent proof that my son was gone. And still, Javier refused to believe me.

But before I could unleash my anger, his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen-an important client, no doubt.

"I don't have time for this," he muttered, already walking toward the door. "I’ll be back in a few minutes. Don't do anything stupid."

And just like that, he was gone.

The door shut. Silence pressed in. But not for long.

The tap of stilettos against the tile.

I didn't need to look. I already knew it was Sofia.

She slid into the room with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. Her eyes flicked to the urn, then to me.

"Poor, poor Isla," she cooed. "One twin gone. One to go."

My breath hitched. "Don't you dare—"

"Oh, don't look at me like that." She sauntered closer, her perfume chokingly sweet. "You were always just a stand-in, a name to cover our love.

Javier was mine long before you, and he'll be mine again when you're locked away in that asylum where you belong."

I shot her a glare. "If you think I’m going anywhere, think again."

Her eyes glittered with a hunger that made my stomach turn. "Delusional as always. Soon, I'll be your daughter's new mother. Or maybe not. Maybe she joins Matteo."

She grabbed the urn. And before I could reach her, she snatched it up.

"No! Put him down!"

"If you want him back," she said, lifting her phone in her other hand, its camera blinking red, "you'll prove just how unfit you are. Beg. Bark. Crawl. Slap yourself. Show me the madness Javier and I already see."

My knees hit the cold tile before my pride could stop them. Matteo was balanced between her hands and the open window.

I pressed my palms together. "Please. Please give him back."

I did everything she said to look like I was crazy. She recorded every second. "Yes... that's it. Show me what a crazy bitch you are."

And then, with deliberate cruelty, she tipped the urn.

Ashes swirled out the window, vanishing into the air outside.

"No!"

I surged to my feet, blind rage taking over. My good arm slammed into her chest, driving her against the window frame. The phone clattered to the floor.

She struggled for balance, almost falling over the edge.

That's when the door burst open.

"Isla!" Javier's shout was thunder. His eyes took in the scene. Sofia dangling, me gripping her wrist.

And he didn't ask. He didn't think. He shoved me.

The back of my skull cracked against the dresser.

White-hot pain. Blood streamed down my temple.

My body crumpled, shaking.

Sofia stumbled forward into his arms, sobbing like a saint. "She attacked me. She tried to kill me—again!"

Through the ringing in my ears, I forced the words out. "She... scattered... Matteo—"

But Javier's glare silenced me. "Enough. One more act like this and I'll have you dragged to an asylum immediately. Don’t fucking test me."

He carried Sofia out in his arms. And I lay there, bleeding, alone.

That night, something inside me stopped breaking and started hardening.

I drove home in silence, the city lights flickering like distant stars.

Not as Javier’s wife.

Not as a grieving mother.

But as a woman who had nothing left to lose.

The divorce papers waited on the counter like a loaded gun—final, cold, already signed for sole custody of Amanda.

Next to them sat the USB drive: every recording, every photo, every secret Javier thought he’d buried.

I called Claire. “Get this to your contact,” I said when she answered.

“This file burns everything down.”

Her voice was steady. “Consider it done.”

While the house slept, I erased myself.

No clothes left in the closets.

No fingerprints on the door handles.

Every drawer stripped of my scent and memory.

Amanda’s transfer papers were ready—new hospital, new name, a quiet room where no one would connect her to me.

I triple-checked the forged passports Claire had arranged. The documents felt like freedom in my shaking hands.

Before sunrise, I sealed the envelope with the divorce agreement and custody claim and left it where Javier would find it first—on his precious mahogany desk.

A small Post-it rested on top, my handwriting calm and final: *Sign it or watch the world sign it for you.*

I kissed Amanda’s sleeping forehead, breathed in the last traces of the life I was leaving behind, and carried her to the waiting car.

By the time Javier returned, the house would be empty.

No wife to control.

No children to use as leverage.

Only a thick envelope, a trail of digital evidence ready to explode, and the echo of a woman he never really knew.

Tomorrow, the world would know the truth.

He thought I was unstable?

Let him explain that to the press.

Tonight, I wasn’t his wife.

I was the storm coming for him.
