Chapter 1

The night bus sighed to a stop beneath the fluorescent lights of the Red Mesa station. I had one boot on the pavement when a broad hand lifted between me and the terminal doors.

"Emma Hart."

Seven years had changed Luke Mercer in all the ways I had tried not to imagine. He was broader through the shoulders, harder around the mouth, and wearing a sheriff's uniform instead of the faded ranch shirts I remembered. The silver star over his chest caught the station light.

"Hello, Luke."

His expression did not move. "Hands where I can see them. Step away from the bus."

I looked at the folded yellow notice in his hand. "You're arresting me at my father's funeral?"

"I'm detaining you on an active county warrant. Unpaid traffic citation and failure to appear. Dated seven years ago."

I almost laughed. The sound never made it out. "That ticket was for a broken taillight. I paid it after I reached Colorado."

"The system still shows a warrant."

"Then your system is wrong."

He gestured toward his cruiser. "You can argue that at the station."

Fourteen hours on a bus from Fort Collins had left my back aching and my patience stripped thin. I could have made a scene. Half the station already recognized me; I could feel the stares landing like grit against my skin. Instead, I lifted my canvas bag and walked where Luke pointed.

Across the highway, a campaign billboard rose above the gas station. KEEP SHERIFF MERCER. Luke's official photograph filled one side. On the other stood Celeste Ward, smiling in a tailored navy suit, one hand resting on his arm. The smaller line beneath her name announced her campaign for the New Mexico House.

The diamond on her left hand was visible even in the printed photograph.

So that part of the gossip was true.

Seven years ago, I had left Luke at the altar with one sentence on hotel stationery: I never loved you. By sunrise, my father had told half of Red Mesa that I had run away with another man. I never corrected him. I never corrected anyone.

Tonight I had returned for Raymond Hart's funeral, the probate hearing, and the sale of a ranch I had spent years trying not to think about. Nothing more.

"Lead the way, Sheriff," I said.

Luke opened the rear door of the cruiser, then stopped. His jaw tightened. After a second, he shut it again and pointed to the front passenger seat instead.

"You're not under arrest unless the warrant checks out."

"Generous."

"Don't."

The drive to the sheriff's office passed in silence. Red Mesa looked smaller than it had in my memory: one grocery store, one diner, the water tower rising beyond the courthouse, and the dark line of ranch land beyond town. Every block carried a version of me I had abandoned.

At the station, Luke set my bag beside a metal desk rather than taking it from me.

"Sit."

"I'll stand."

"Suit yourself."

He turned to the night clerk behind the safety glass. "Run Hart, Emma Louise. Confirm the originating court and disposition."

The clerk began typing.

Luke stayed on the other side of the desk. "Seven years. Not one visit."

I folded my arms. "Is that part of the citation?"

"Not even for my mother's funeral."

That landed where he meant it to. Judith Mercer had been kinder to me than my own father most days. I learned about her stroke a week after she was buried because a forwarded letter followed me through two temporary addresses before reaching my student apartment. By then, the town had already decided my canceled wedding killed her.

I had never found a way to answer grief that arrived that late.

"Are we processing a warrant," I asked, "or are you using a badge to question your ex-fiancée?"

His eyes sharpened. "I'm asking why you vanished."

"And I'm asking whether I am free to go."

For a second, the man I once planned to marry looked ready to answer instead of the sheriff. Then the clerk cleared his throat.

I pulled out my phone while Luke turned away. A voicemail from Davis, my father's estate attorney, sat at the top of the screen.

"Ms. Hart, this is Aaron Davis. The probate court has set a forced sale date twenty-one days from now unless the estate resolves the secured debts and disputed claims. That includes the house, working acreage, cattle facilities, and attached water rights. Call me as soon as you arrive."

I closed my eyes.

Davis continued. "One of the disputed claims reaches beyond the Hart deed. It lists an interest in the Mercer Ranch east spring under an old joint-management agreement. I do not recommend signing any waiver until we review the original filing."

Mercer Ranch.

A week before my wedding, I had found a folder in Raymond's desk with Luke's signature at the top and a blank notary block at the bottom. My father had ripped it out of my hands before I could read every page.

I had spent seven years telling myself the contract died when the wedding did.

The clerk frowned at his monitor. "Sheriff?"

Luke walked to the glass.

"The traffic case was paid and closed," the clerk said. "The warrant was recalled six years and eleven months ago. There's no active hold."

The station seemed to go very still.

I looked at the yellow paper in Luke's hand. It was not a current warrant. It was an old printout, folded along softened creases.

"You checked this before you came to the bus station," I said.

Luke did not answer.

The clerk glanced between us and quietly pushed a release form through the slot.

I signed it, picked up my bag, and headed for the door. Behind me, Luke said my name.

I stopped without turning.

"Emma."

I looked over my shoulder at the sheriff who had just used a dead case to force me into the one conversation I had crossed three states to avoid.

"Tomorrow," I said, "you can explain exactly why you thought that was acceptable."
