Chapter 1

I had waited three years for this moment.

Three years of dreams, of hope, of believing that when I turned eighteen, everything would finally fall into place. Tonight, under the full moon's silver gaze, I would officially become Damon's mate. The Luna of the Shadowmoon Pack.

My fingers trembled as I fastened the delicate silver necklace around my throat—my mother's necklace, the only precious thing she'd left me before the rogues took her life. The pendant caught the moonlight streaming through my bedroom window, casting tiny rainbows across the mirror. I'd saved this moment, saved this piece of her, for tonight.

The white dress I'd chosen hugged my curves perfectly, its flowing skirt dancing around my ankles as I moved. I'd imagined this night a thousand times, pictured the way Damon's eyes would light up when he saw me, the way his hands would shake as he placed the Luna's crown on my head.

Tonight, I would finally belong somewhere. Finally be someone's first choice.

The Great Hall buzzed with anticipation as over three hundred pack members filled every available space. Candles flickered along the stone walls, their warm glow mixing with the moonlight that poured through the massive skylights above. The air thrummed with excitement, conversations rising and falling like ocean waves.

I stood at the edge of the crowd, my heart hammering against my ribs. Any moment now, Damon would appear, and our future would begin.

Then I saw him.

Damon emerged from the shadows at the far end of the hall, his broad shoulders filling out his ceremonial black jacket perfectly. His dark hair was slicked back, revealing the sharp angles of his face that had haunted my dreams for years. Even from this distance, I could see the authority that radiated from him, the natural power that made him our Alpha.

But something was wrong.

Serena walked beside him, her arm linked through his like they were attending a dinner party instead of my mating ceremony. Her golden hair cascaded over one shoulder in perfect waves, and she wore a flowing emerald gown that seemed to shimmer with each step. But it was her hand—her other hand—that made my blood turn to ice.

She was cradling her stomach. The slight swell was barely visible, but unmistakable.

The whispers started immediately, spreading through the crowd like wildfire.

"Is that...?"

"She's pregnant."

"But tonight is supposed to be..."

"Poor Iris."

My legs felt like water. This couldn't be happening. Not tonight. Not when I'd waited so long, dreamed so hard, hoped so desperately.

Damon's eyes found mine across the crowded hall, and for a split second, I saw something that might have been regret flicker across his features. But it vanished so quickly I wondered if I'd imagined it.

He stepped onto the raised platform at the center of the hall, Serena still clinging to his arm. The crowd fell silent, hundreds of expectant faces turning toward their Alpha.

"My pack," Damon's voice boomed through the hall, commanding and clear. "Tonight, under the witness of the full moon, I have an important announcement."

My heart stopped beating entirely.

"I, Damon Blackwood, Alpha of the Shadowmoon Pack, formally reject Iris Caldwell as my mate."

The words hit me like a physical blow. The mate bond, that golden thread I'd felt connecting us since my eighteenth birthday two weeks ago, suddenly snapped with a pain so intense I gasped aloud. It felt like someone had reached into my chest and torn out my heart with their bare hands.

"Instead," Damon continued, his voice growing stronger, "I choose Serena Whitmore as my Luna. She carries my heir—the future of our pack."

The hall erupted. Some pack members cheered, others murmured in shock, but the sound felt distant and muffled, like I was hearing it from underwater. The rejection burned through my veins like liquid fire, the severed bond leaving a gaping wound in my soul.

I stumbled backward, my vision blurring. The silver necklace felt like it was choking me, my mother's precious gift suddenly heavy as a chain.

My knees buckled, and I hit the cold stone floor hard. Pain shot through my legs, but it was nothing compared to the agony tearing through my chest. I looked up desperately, hoping someone—anyone—would help me, but the crowd had already turned away, their attention focused on their new Luna.

Serena stepped forward, her hand still protectively curved over her belly. She looked down at me with eyes that sparkled with cruel satisfaction.

"Oh, Iris," she said, her voice dripping with false sympathy loud enough for those nearby to hear. "I'm so sorry you had to find out this way. But honestly, I told you months ago—he was never really yours."

The words were like salt in an open wound. I tried to push myself up, but my arms shook with the effort.

"You see," Serena continued, crouching down so only I could hear her next words, "some of us are meant to be Lunas. And others..." Her eyes raked over my fallen form. "Others are meant to serve."

A shadow fell across us, and I looked up to see Margaret, my stepmother, approaching with what looked like concern etched across her face. But I knew better. I'd seen that expression before—the one she wore when she wanted others to think she cared.

"Oh, my poor stepdaughter," Margaret said, loud enough for the surrounding pack members to hear. She knelt beside me, her hand hovering near my shoulder but not quite touching. "I tried to prepare you for this possibility. I told you not to get your hopes up."

Laughter rippled through the crowd—not kind laughter, but the sharp, cutting kind that felt like knives against my skin.

"She actually thought she had a chance," someone whispered.

"With the Alpha? Her?"

"How embarrassing."

Two pack guards appeared at Margaret's subtle gesture, their faces impassive as they hauled me to my feet. My legs could barely support my weight, the rejection still burning through my system like poison.

"Perhaps it's best if Iris retires for the evening," Margaret suggested, her voice carrying the authority of someone who'd been Luna before my father's death. "She needs time to... process this."

The guards began dragging me toward the hall's exit, my feet barely touching the ground. The celebration continued behind us, the pack already moving on from my humiliation to toast their new Luna and future heir.

As we reached the doorway, a sharp pain shot through my lower abdomen. Instinctively, my hand flew to my stomach, fingers splaying protectively over the barely-there swell that no one had noticed beneath my flowing dress.

The twins. My secret, discovered just two weeks ago during a routine check-up I'd hidden from everyone. Damon's children, growing inside me even as he rejected me for another woman carrying his heir.

I pressed my hand firmer against my belly, feeling the fierce surge of maternal protection that had sustained me through the darkest moments of the past two weeks.

"I'll protect you both," I whispered, so quietly that even the guards couldn't hear. "No matter what happens, I'll keep you safe."

Behind me, I caught a glimpse of Serena and Margaret exchanging a look across the crowded hall—a look that spoke of shared secrets and plans yet to unfold. Whatever they had orchestrated tonight, I realized with growing dread, my public humiliation was only the beginning.
