Chapter 2

The drive back to the suburbs took twenty-three minutes.

I pushed open the front door of the house Robert and I had shared for twenty-two years. The foyer was dark, nothing like the bright apartment where my husband and son had shut me out. I dropped my keys on the console and went upstairs without turning on a light.

My hard-shell suitcase sat on the top shelf of the walk-in closet. I dragged it down, threw it across the bed, and started packing. Blazers. Slacks. Underwear. The diamond bracelet my grandfather gave me when I turned thirty. I did not fold anything. I wanted distance more than order.

The front door slammed downstairs.

Robert took the stairs two at a time. He appeared in the bedroom doorway, breathing hard, still wearing the navy cashmere sweater I had bought him.

“What are you doing?” he demanded, flipping on the lights.

“Leaving.”

“You embarrassed Jason tonight.” He planted himself between me and the closet. “You showed up after he asked you not to come, started an argument in the hallway, and made his friends uncomfortable.”

“I brought dinner to my son’s housewarming.” I reached around him for my wool coat. “You brought your mistress.”

“Dana is not my mistress.”

“Then what is she?”

His jaw tightened. “She is someone who understands what I need.”

The answer hurt less than I expected. I had already seen her sitting on my table and pouring my wine. The affair no longer needed a confession. It had furniture, a guest list, and my son’s approval.

“What do you need, Robert?” I asked. “A younger woman who tells you every bad decision is brilliant? Someone who lets you pretend the money is yours?”

“You are proving my point.” He rubbed a hand over his face. “Every conversation with you becomes an audit.”

“Because every promise from you becomes an expense.”

He laughed bitterly. “You have not worked in more than twenty years. Do not lecture me about money.”

I stopped packing and faced him. “My inheritance paid the down payment on this house. My trust secured your first business loan. My credit backed Jason’s apartment and his car. You worked, Robert. I never denied that. But you built your success on my foundation, then acted as if I should be grateful for a room in the house I financed.”

“That money became marital property.”

“No. The inheritance remained separate. You know it, and your attorney knows it.”

For the first time that night, fear crossed his face.

He recovered quickly. “You are upset. Sleep in the guest room. We will discuss this tomorrow after you calm down.”

“I am calm.” I opened the bottom dresser drawer and removed a leather document case. Inside were copies of the trust agreement, the property deed, bank statements, and the prenuptial rider Robert had forgotten I kept. “That is why I am leaving now.”

He reached for the case. I stepped back.

“Do not be ridiculous,” he said. “Where will you go?”

“Somewhere I am allowed through the front door.”

My phone rang on the bed. Jason’s name lit the screen.

Robert glanced at it. “Answer him. He feels terrible.”

I put the call on speaker.

“Mom?” Jason said. Music and laughter still filled the apartment behind him. “Dad said you took the food.”

“I did.”

“Can you send money for pizza? The card keeps declining.”

Robert stared at me.

“Ask Dana,” I said.

“She already paid for the drinks,” Jason complained. “Come on. Everyone is hungry.”

“You told your friends she was your father’s wife.”

“It was easier.”

“Then let your new family feed you.”

I ended the call.

Robert’s face hardened. “Turn the cards back on.”

“No.”

“You cannot punish our son because you are jealous.”

“He is twenty-two years old. He can buy his own pizza.”

“He just graduated. He is finding himself.”

“He found himself at the door tonight. He chose to stand between me and a home I paid for.”

Robert grabbed the suitcase handle before I could lift it. “You are not walking out with family assets.”

I opened the document case and held up the trust schedule. “The jewelry listed here is separate property. The clothes are mine. The money I moved tonight came from my inheritance account. Touch this suitcase, and I will call the police.”

His hand fell away.

“You moved the money?”

“Every dollar that belongs to me.”

“You will destroy the merger.”

“You told me the Chicago trip was for the merger. Dana’s hotel receipt says otherwise.”

His silence was the only confession I needed.

I zipped the suitcase and pulled it from the bed. Robert followed me into the hall.

“Monica, listen to me. Dana is temporary. She is exciting, but she is not a wife. You know how these things work.”

I stopped at the top of the stairs.

“No,” I said. “I know how this worked. I paid. You lied. Jason helped. That arrangement is over.”

He tried one last time. “If you leave, do not expect me to welcome you back when this performance is finished.”

I looked at him across the house my money had bought.

“You still think I am performing for you.”

I carried my suitcase downstairs, opened the door, and stepped into the cold night. Behind me, Robert shouted my name. I did not turn around.

By dawn, I had signed a month-to-month lease on the only apartment available without a credit check. The building’s brick facade was cracked. One upstairs window had been patched with plywood. The lobby smelled of bleach and old cooking oil.

The property manager handed me a brass key and pointed toward the stairs.

“Unit 4B,” he said. “Elevator’s broken.”

Before disappearing into his office, he warned me the heat worked “most days” and that rent had to be paid in cash. I made him add both claims to the lease and initial the changes.

Then I stood alone in the lobby, listening to pipes knock inside the walls. The place was ugly, but no one there knew Robert’s name.

I tightened my grip on the suitcase and looked up four flights.

For the first time in twenty-two years, every step ahead belonged to me.
