Chapter 3

The Nighthollow Pack's mountain lodge sits at the edge of the Cascade Range, all timber beams and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the forest like a painting. It's the kind of place Alphas choose when they want to remind everyone how much territory they control.

I wasn't planning to come.

But Dr. Isla Reyes from the Cedarfall Pack contacted me two weeks ago. She'd heard about my work with rejected wolves—herbal treatments that help stabilize a severed bond's physical symptoms—and wanted me to present at the cross-pack gathering. Professional opportunity. Neutral ground. A chance to build credibility outside Ironveil's shadow.

So here I am, standing beside a display table on the lodge's main floor, explaining the properties of valerian root to a Beta from the Silverfang Pack. My samples are arranged in glass jars with handwritten labels. Clean. Precise. The kind of presentation that makes people forget you used to be a rogue.

The Beta nods thoughtfully and moves on. I'm restocking a depleted jar when I feel it—the particular weight of an Alpha's attention. Not aura. Just focus.

I don't look up immediately. I finish arranging the jars. Then I turn.

Bradley stands ten feet away, dressed in dark slacks and a charcoal sweater that probably cost more than my rent. His expression is carefully neutral, but his eyes track me like I'm prey that wandered into range.

He doesn't approach. Not yet. He's waiting for me to acknowledge him first, to give him the opening.

I don't.

I turn back to my display and begin writing notes on treatment dosages for a Gamma who asked earlier. My handwriting is steady. My wolf is silent, but not absent. She's watching.

Fifteen minutes pass. The crowd shifts. Conversations ebb and flow around us. Then I hear his footsteps—measured, deliberate—crossing the hardwood floor.

"Scarlett."

I finish the sentence I'm writing. Cap my pen. Look up.

"Bradley."

His jaw tightens slightly at my tone. Too neutral. Not warm enough to be forgiveness, not cold enough to be dismissal. Just... nothing.

"Can we talk?" He gestures toward the observation deck—a wide balcony that wraps around the lodge's exterior. "Privately."

I glance at the deck. Through the windows, I can see at least a dozen wolves out there. Alphas. Betas. Ranked wolves from half the packs in the Pacific Northwest. Private is a word Bradley's using incorrectly.

"All right," I say.

We walk. He holds the door open—a small, performative courtesy. I step past him onto the deck. The air is cold and sharp, carrying the scent of pine and distant snow. Wolves turn to look. Some pretend not to. Others watch openly, curious.

Bradley positions himself near the railing, angling so his back is to most of the crowd but his voice will carry if he wants it to. Alpha habit. Everything is theater.

"I'll be direct," he says quietly. "The solstice is in two weeks. I don't have time for—"

"For what?" I ask. "Apologies? Herbal tea? Rehearsed tears?"

His expression flattens. The softness he wore at my cabin is completely gone. What's left is harder. Sharper.

"For games," he says. "You want me to grovel. Fine. I was wrong. I rejected you. I hurt you. I'm sorry. But we're past that now. This is about practicality."

I blink slowly.

He leans forward slightly, lowering his voice just enough that the wolves behind us have to strain to hear. "A paper-only Mate Ceremony. No marking. No bond. Just the legal formality to satisfy the bloodright clause. In exchange, I'll split the Ironveil territory with you. Fifty-fifty. You get half the estate, half the resources, and you walk away. No pack obligations. No Luna duties. Just the money and the land."

I look at him for a long moment. His eyes are steady. Calculating. This is the offer of a man who thinks everything has a price.

"No," I say.

His brow furrows. "Scarlett—"

"The Moon Goddess gave you a mate, Bradley." My voice is quiet, but I don't lower it. I let it carry. "You threw her in the rain. There is nothing left to split."

The deck goes silent.

Every conversation stops. Every wolf turns. I feel their attention like a physical weight—Alphas, Betas, witnesses from packs whose names I don't even know. They're all listening now.

Bradley's face goes pale. Then red. His Alpha aura flares—instinctive, defensive—but it doesn't touch me. My wolf doesn't even flinch.

"You're making a mistake," he says, and his voice has an edge now. Not quite a command, but close. "That estate is worth millions. The territory spans—"

"I know what it's worth," I say. "Your grandmother made sure I would."

His hands curl into fists at his sides. Behind him, I see wolves exchanging glances. Whispers start to ripple outward like stones dropped in water.

I turn away. Walk back toward the lodge door. My steps are measured. Calm. I don't look back.

Behind me, I hear Bradley say my name once more—"Scarlett"—but it's not a command. It's something closer to desperation.

I keep walking.

Inside, Dr. Reyes catches my eye from across the room. She raises an eyebrow—a silent question. I give her a small nod. I'm fine.

But my wolf isn't fine. She's awake. Focused. And for the first time since the Come of Age Ceremony, she's not interested in healing.

She's interested in building something that will outlast every wolf who thought we were disposable.

That night, back in my cabin, I pull out my sketchbook and begin designing the exhibition. Not just a display. A statement. A garden installation I'll call "Rebirth"—medicinal plants grown from seeds I collected during my rogue years, each one labeled with the name of a wolf it helped heal.

I work until dawn, my pen moving steadily across the page, and somewhere in the back of my mind, I hear the clock ticking down to the winter solstice.

Two weeks.

Bradley has two weeks to find another way.

I have two weeks to make sure the entire Pacific Northwest knows exactly what kind of Alpha he is.
