Chapter 1

I've been standing in the rain since sunrise.

The Ironveil pack house looms three stories above me, every window glowing warm against the gray November sky. I can see shadows moving behind the glass—wolves going about their day, probably wondering who the idiot is standing in the cold. My coat stopped being waterproof around hour two. My boots are soaked through. My wolf flickers somewhere deep in my chest, restless and uncertain, like she can't decide whether to howl or go silent forever.

I tell myself I'm not hoping. Hope died two years ago on the night of my Come of Age Ceremony, when Alpha Bradley Cole—my fated mate, the wolf the Moon Goddess herself chose for me—looked me in the eye and said the words that severed our bond. "I, Bradley Cole, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Scarlett Nelson, as my mate." The pain was instant. Physical. Like someone reached into my chest and tore something vital loose. My wolf screamed, but no sound came out.

He chose Lana Gomez instead. His childhood companion. The girl with no fated claim but fifteen years of history.

I left as a rogue that night. My mother—Margaret Nelson, a retired Delta warrior who runs an herbal shop in the next town over—packed my bag without a word and pressed a silver-and-moonstone pendant into my hands. She didn't tell me it would be okay. She just looked at me with those steady, fierce eyes and said, "You're stronger than this pack deserves."

I spent two years proving her right. I built a life. I developed my healing work, earned respect from neighboring packs, learned to sleep through the night without dreaming about the mate bond that never was. I stitched every wound shut with my own hands.

Then three weeks ago, Bradley called.

His voice was soft. Careful. He said he'd made a mistake. He said his wolf had been howling for me ever since I left, that he couldn't sleep, couldn't think, couldn't lead the pack properly because the bond he severed was tearing him apart from the inside. He cried. Actual tears. I heard them catch in his throat.

He asked if I would come back. Not to the pack house—not yet. Just to talk. To see if we could fix what he broke.

I should have said no.

But part of me—the part that still carries the scar of that rejection like a splinter I can't extract—needed to hear him say it. Needed the wound acknowledged. So I said yes.

His Beta contacted me yesterday with instructions: come to the pack house at dawn. Bring nothing. The remarriage bond documents would be ready. We'd sign them quietly, then begin the process of rebuilding.

So here I am.

Standing in the rain.

Waiting.

No one has opened the door. No one has even looked out the window long enough to meet my eyes. My phone says it's nearly six in the evening now. Eleven hours. My fingers are numb. My wolf is so still I'm not sure she's even there anymore.

Then my phone vibrates.

Twice.

I pull it from my pocket with shaking hands. The screen is wet, but I can see the notifications clearly enough. The first is a video file from an unknown number. No message. Just the file. I press play.

The video is shaky, like someone filmed it from behind a column or a doorway. But the image is clear. Bradley stands in what looks like the Silverfang Pack's ceremonial hall—I recognize the carved wooden pillars. Lana is in front of him, her head tilted back, exposing her neck. Bradley's hands are positioned at her throat, his wolf's aura visible even through the phone screen. They're rehearsing a Marking Ceremony. The ritual is unmistakable. His canines extend slightly. She closes her eyes like she's already feeling it.

My wolf doesn't howl. She just… stops.

The second notification is a screenshot. A group chat. I recognize the names: Bradley's inner circle. His Gamma. His lead Delta. Beta Aidan Mills.

Bradley's message, timestamped two hours ago, reads: *"Let her stand in the cold. A few rounds of silence and she'll crawl back where she belongs."*

Someone replied with a laughing emoji.

I stare at the screen until the rain blurs the words. Then I lower the phone. I turn away from the Ironveil pack house door. I don't run. I don't cry. I just walk.

My car is parked down the hill, half-hidden in the trees where I left it this morning. I get in. Start the engine. Drive.

I book a motel room on the edge of Ironveil territory—the kind of place that doesn't ask questions and doesn't care about pack affiliations. The room smells like old carpet and disinfectant. I set my soaked bag on the floor, sit on the edge of the bed, and go very still.

My mother always said I blink slowly when I'm processing something too big for words. She's right. I blink now. Once. Twice. My wolf is silent, but it's not the silence of defeat. It's the silence of something breaking free.

Around midnight, something flickers at the edge of my mind. A mind-link thread, unstable and unauthorized. I recognize the signature immediately: Beta Aidan Mills.

I almost sever it on instinct. But something stops me. Maybe curiosity. Maybe the faint hope that one wolf in that pack house has a conscience.

The link stabilizes, fragile and guilt-heavy.

*"Scarlett."* His voice is rough, like he's been arguing with himself for hours. *"I don't know why I'm doing this. I should've done it weeks ago. Maybe months."*

I don't respond. I just wait.

*"Bradley's reconciliation—it's not real. It's never been about his wolf. It's about the bloodright clause."*

I go very still.

*"Grand Luna Eleanora—Bradley's grandmother—she embedded a clause in the Ironveil bloodright decree before she died. If Bradley doesn't complete a Mate Ceremony with his Moon Goddess-chosen mate by the winter solstice, the entire estate transfers away from him. The territory. The fortune. The Alpha seat. Everything. He's known for three months. Every apology, every tear, every word—it was all theater."*

The link wavers, like Aidan's struggling to hold it.

*"I watched you stand in the rain today. I watched him laugh about it in the group chat. And I—I couldn't. I can't. I don't expect you to forgive me. I just… you deserved to know."*

I take a slow breath.

*"Thank you,"* I send back. One word. That's all he gets.

Then I sever the link.

I sit in the motel room, rain drumming against the window, and for the first time in two years, I smile.

Not because I'm happy.

Because I'm finally, completely awake.
