Chapter 1

After ten years with my boyfriend, Brenton, I overheard him call me "ordinary" on my 28th birthday. He told his friend he'd regret marrying me because my middle-class background wasn't good enough for his wealthy family. The next day, he kicked me out of our home.

His mother then paid me to cater a party, serving the very woman she' d always wanted for her son.

Ten years of my life, erased. I was disposable, a placeholder they no longer needed.

That night, heartbroken and homeless, I did something crazy. I opened a dating app, found a quiet, dependable Marine from high school, and sent him a message.

His profile said: "Looking for a serious partner for marriage and family. No games."

So I typed out the words that would change my life.

"This might sound crazy, but if you're serious about getting married... would you consider marrying me?"

Chapter 1

Carley Sanchez POV:

Turning twenty-eight felt like hitting a wall. Not a physical wall, but one made of unspoken expectations and the ticking of a clock that only I seemed to hear. My mom had called that morning, her voice laced with the usual "When will Brenton finally propose, Carley?" It wasn't a question anymore; it was a demand wrapped in concern, a constant hum in the background of my decade-long relationship.

I pushed the thought aside, grabbing the small cake I' d brought. Brenton's office was just a few blocks from our shared condo. I wanted to surprise him for lunch, maybe finally get a moment that felt like ours, away from the endless society events and his mother's critical gaze.

The office was quieter than usual. I waved to the receptionist, who was busy on a call, and headed straight for Brenton's private office. The door was slightly ajar, and I heard voices inside.

It was Brenton's voice, low and dismissive. "She's just... ordinary, Mark. You know how my mother is. She expects someone with a pedigree, someone who fits into our world." The words were like a punch to my stomach. Ordinary. After ten years, that's what I was to him.

Mark mumbled something I couldn't quite catch, but Brenton cut him off. "It's not just my mother. It's the whole family. They see her as a freelance writer from a middle-class background. Not exactly the future Mrs. Jarvis they envisioned." My heart, which had been squeezing tighter and tighter, now felt like it was breaking into tiny pieces.

Then came the worst part. Mark asked, "So, are you going to propose or what?" Brenton sighed, a sound that ripped through me. "I don't know, man. It's complicated. What if it doesn't work out? What if I regret it?" Regret it. He regretted the idea of marrying me.

Ten years. A whole decade of my life. I had built my world around him, around us. I remembered the early days, the promises whispered in the dark, the shared dreams that now felt like a cruel joke. It wasn't about love for him. It was about status. About what fit, what was "socially appropriate." My entire being, my character, my love-it all amounted to being "ordinary" against his family's expectations.

I pushed the door open, a forced smile on my face, the cake feeling heavy in my hands. Brenton looked up, surprised, then smiled. "Carley! What a surprise." We had lunch. I picked at my food, the taste of betrayal far stronger than any celebratory sweetness.

Later, back in our condo, he tried to kiss me, to hold me. I let him, but my body felt like a stone. Empty. Silent. The words "ordinary" and "regret" echoed in my head, drowning out everything else.

He pulled back, his brow furrowed. "Carley? What's wrong? You've been so quiet all day. Is everything okay?" His concern felt hollow, a performance.

He moved away, a hint of annoyance in his voice. "Are you breaking up with me? Is that what this is?" He asked it like a statement, not a question, as if I was being unreasonable.

I looked at him, really looked at him, and saw a stranger. "Is it, Brenton? Are we over?" My voice was steady, betraying none of the earthquake happening inside me.

He hesitated for a long moment, then nodded. "Yes, Carley. I guess we are." The words were a soft blow, but they solidified everything. It was done.

He grabbed his jacket, already moving towards the door. "I have a charity gala tonight. I can't miss it." Just like that. Ten years, and a charity gala was more important than the end of our life together.

He was gone. And I wasn't crying. I wasn't even sad. There was just a vast, echoing emptiness where my heart used to be, a strange sense of quiet after years of shouting into a void.

My phone buzzed in my hand. Not a message from him. It was a notification from a dating app I'd downloaded months ago, mostly as a joke, but had never actually used. I scrolled through it mindlessly. Then I saw a profile I recognized. Jesse Morrison. A Marine Sergeant, just back from deployment. His profile clearly stated: "Looking for a serious, long-term partner for marriage and family. No games." Jesse. I remembered him from high school, a quiet, dependable guy.

My fingers moved without thought. I typed out a message. "Hey, Jesse. This might sound crazy, but if you're serious about getting married... would you consider marrying me?" I added, "No strings, no grand romance. Just a solid partnership. A fresh start. For both of us."
