Chapter 1

My "best friend" Savannah had a talent for taking what was mine—my sponsors, my boyfriends, my spotlight. And she loved nothing more than to parade her latest victory in front of me, turning me into a campus-wide laughingstock.

Today at a cafe, she did it again, flaunting a painting that should have been a gift for me from my now "ex"-boyfriend.

She thought she had me cornered, broken, and humiliated as always.

But this time was different.

This time, I was ready for her.

And this time, I had an ace up my sleeve. His name was Julian Thorne.

1

Savannah stole my "ex-boyfriend" Rhys. And now, here she was at a cafe on the UCLA campus, flaunting the limited-edition painting that should have been mine.

"This painting just has so much more presence in my apartment," Savannah declared, tossing her hair over her shoulder. The vibrant colors of the contemporary art piece seemed to mock me, almost jarring under the bright California sun streaming into the cafe. I nearly snapped the paintbrush in my hand. Rhys had bought it at an auction last week, intending to give it to me.

"Savannah, you…"

"Oh, right. This was meant for you," she interrupted, a sickeningly sweet smile on her face that was equal parts feigned innocence and pure triumph. "But Rhys agreed. He said the painting… just suits my taste better. He even texted me last night, said he'd never met a girl as captivating as me."

The air in the cafe grew thick with tension. Students at nearby tables traded knowing glances.

Hailey, one of her loyal minions, murmured just loud enough for me to hear, "Here we go again."

"Savannah is such a good friend. She's always helping Avalon see these guys for who they really are," Madison added with faux sincerity.

"Exactly," Riley nodded. "If it weren't for Savannah testing them out, Avalon would have been played by some jerk by now."

My nails dug into my palms, crescents sharp enough to draw blood.

Savannah tilted her head, her eyes oozing fake pity. "Avalon, I know you're upset. But I just want to protect you." She sighed dramatically. "You're too naive, Avalon. You can't see men for what they are. They just want to play games. They're never serious."

"Yeah, Rhys didn't even remember your favorite artist," Hailey said, her face a mask of solemn concern. "A guy like that? It tells you everything you need to know."

I clenched my jaw, saying nothing. I knew the truth.

To every man who showed the slightest interest in me, Savannah would whisper the same poison: lies about a promiscuous past, always accompanied by a few carefully fabricated screenshots.

And every time, I was the one left looking like a fool. The men would inevitably pull away, citing some pathetic excuse, only to reappear on her arm a week later.

"It's not you, Avalon. It's me." "I'm just not ready for a serious relationship." "We can still be friends."

All lies. And every single man ended up as just another trophy on Savannah's social media feed.

But today… today was different.

"Avalon?" Hailey waved a hand in front of my face. "Hello? Anyone home?"

I blinked, pulling myself from my thoughts. "Sorry. I was just thinking."

"Thinking about Rhys?" Madison cooed, her words dripping with condescension.

"No." I pulled out my phone. "I was thinking about my date tonight."

Silence fell over the table. Savannah's triumphant smile froze.

"A date?" she repeated, her voice sharp. "With who?"

I held up my phone, showing them the calendar invitation from "J.T.": Tonight, 7 PM, Private Dinner.

"Who's J.T.?" Hailey asked, her brow furrowed in confusion.

"Oh." I tilted my head, perfectly mimicking Savannah's signature smug move. "Julian Thorne."

Dead silence. Every head in the cafe turned our way.

Julian Thorne. The name echoed in the sudden quiet. The tech titan of Los Angeles, founder of Thorne Dynamics. A man whose name alone sent tremors through Silicon Beach. He wasn't just wealthy; he was a dynasty. Handsome, intense, and moved with the predatory grace of a panther. Forbes estimated his company's worth in the tens of billions, but everyone knew that was just the tip of the iceberg.

"You're lying," Savannah said flatly, but a hairline crack appeared in her composure.

I just smiled and tucked my phone away. "Think what you want."

"Wait…" Savannah lunged, grabbing my arm. "Let me see that invitation again."

I pulled away smoothly. "Sorry. It's private."

Ring, ring, ring. My phone lit up the table. The screen flashed: Incoming Call - Unknown Number.

I answered, keeping my voice level. "Hello?"

"Avalon?" A deep, velvety voice flowed through the speaker, so magnetic it seemed to vibrate in the air. "It's Julian. I'm afraid I'm five minutes early. Hope you don't mind a man who's punctual."

The color drained from Savannah's face.

She snatched the phone from my hand. "Hi, I'm Savannah, Avalon's best friend," she cooed in her sweetest, most seductive voice. "She's just finishing up, but why don't we chat? I'm such an admirer of your work…"

"Put her on the phone." The voice on the other end turned to solid ice.

Savannah's smile faltered. "But, I just wanted to…"

"Now." The single word landed like a shard of ice.

Savannah's hand trembled as she thrust the phone back at me, her face ashen.

I took it, my voice softening. "Sorry to keep you waiting."

"No trouble at all, my muse," Julian's voice was warm honey once more. "I'm right outside."

I hung up.

The silence was deafening. Students who had been walking by had stopped, their eyes wide, staring at our table.

Savannah stared at me, her face a mask of pure, venomous jealousy. Her voice trembled.

"Your date… is Julian Thorne?"
