Chapter 3

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse kitchen, casting long shadows across the white marble island. Nathan was standing near the espresso machine, dressed in his tailored charcoal suit, reviewing quarterly projections on his phone.

I poured myself a glass of water and leaned against the counter.

"Nathan," I said casually, keeping my voice light. "I’ve been thinking about what happened yesterday."

He glanced up from his screen, his expression immediately guarded. "What about it?"

"I think I’m finally ready to look forward," I said, meeting his eyes without a trace of resentment. "I want to reconsider fertility treatments. I called St. Jude’s this morning to request my full IVF medical history and the original genetic testing files from five years ago. I want a second opinion on why our transfers failed."

Nathan froze.

The silver spoon in his fingers slipped, clinking sharply against the ceramic saucer. For a fraction of a second, the calm, unshakeable facade cracked, revealing a flash of panic in his dark eyes.

He set the cup down with exaggerated care. When he looked at me again, his face had softened into a mask of tender concern.

"Claire, sweetheart," he said softly, walking over to place a gentle hand on my shoulder. "Why do this to yourself? You spent three years in agony over those failed cycles. Opening up old wounds will only break your heart all over again."

"I just want closure," I replied. "And the records."

"Let the past stay in the past," he murmured, his voice laced with practiced warmth. "Don't torture yourself. Focus on resting. We can talk about other options later."

I gave him a small, obedient nod. "Maybe you're right."

Two hours after Nathan left for the corporate headquarters, I sat down at my laptop in the guest room and accessed the hospital's private reproductive patient portal using my verified credentials.

I navigated to the biological archives and clicked on my patient ID: *#0419-C*.

A red system notification flashed across the screen:

*Error 404: System Override Detected. Patient Bio-Record Archive Corrupted. Files Purged via Administrative Master Key at 09:14 AM.*

He had wiped my history from the main server less than forty minutes after our breakfast conversation.

If I hadn't already secured Dr. Miller’s duplicate paper files, my medical history would have vanished from existence entirely.

By seven that evening, the penthouse was suffocatingly crowded.

Nathan had summoned both families for what he called an "urgent private summit." Eleanor sat in the center of the plush sectional, dressed in a lavender silk blouse, sipping chamomile tea with the cold dignity of an empress holding court. Sophie sat beside her, wrapped in a soft cashmere shawl, looking pale, fragile, and utterly innocent.

My father, Robert, sat in the armchair across from them, his hands resting heavily on his knees, his jaw set in a tight line.

I sat alone on the single chair near the window.

"We need to be practical about the reality of our situation," Eleanor began, setting her teacup onto the glass coffee table. She didn't look at me; she addressed the room as if announcing a board decision. "Sophie is carrying Nathan's child. The only child the Cole family is ever going to have."

"Eleanor," Nathan warned quietly, standing by the mantelpiece.

"No, Nathan, someone has to say it," Eleanor cut in sharply. She finally turned her gaze to me, her eyes devoid of warmth. "Claire, you’ve been a loyal wife for six years, but a marriage without an heir is a liability for an enterprise like ours. With Sophie’s pregnancy progressing, keeping up this pretense only creates legal confusion. When this boy is born, his legitimacy cannot be questioned."

"What are you proposing?" I asked evenly.

"A clean, uncontested divorce," Eleanor stated without hesitation. "Before the birth. You sign a standard non-disclosure agreement, we arrange a generous private settlement, and Sophie takes her rightful place as Nathan’s wife. It ensures the inheritance passes smoothly without dragging our name through the tabloids."

The room fell into an uncomfortable silence.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. Instead, I turned my head and looked directly at my father.

Robert had built his career in civil engineering before retiring on the dividends of my early stock allocations. He was the one who had taught me how to read contracts, the one who had walked me down the aisle six years ago and told Nathan to protect me.

"Dad?" I said, my voice steady. "Do you agree with this?"

Robert shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He looked down at his shoes, refusing to meet my eyes, clearing his throat once before he spoke.

"Claire," Robert muttered, his voice heavy with resignation. "Sophie grew up with nothing. After her mother passed, she didn't have your trust funds. She didn't have your education, your company shares, or your security. You've always had more luck in life."

A bitter chill settled deep into my bones.

"She's taking my husband, Dad," I said quietly.

"You're strong, Claire. You've always survived everything on your own," Robert replied, still looking at the floor. "Sophie is fragile. She has a baby to raise now. For once in your life... let your sister have something."

"Your father is being sensible," Eleanor said, nodding approvingly. "We can have the paperwork drawn up by Friday—"

"Ah!"

A sharp, ragged cry cut Eleanor off.

Sophie suddenly bent double on the sofa, clutching both hands against the lower curve of her swollen stomach. Her face turned an ashen shade of gray, beads of sweat instantly breaking out across her forehead.

"Nathan..." Sophie gasped, her breath coming in shallow pants. "The pain... it feels like tearing. Nathan!"

Nathan dropped his phone and rushed to the sofa, catching her before she slumped forward. "Sophie! What is it?"

"My lower back... and the cramps," she sobbed, burying her face into his chest. "It hurts so much. Please don't let anything happen to him!"

"Call the driver!" Nathan roared at Eleanor, scooping Sophie into his arms with frantic urgency. "Get the car downstairs now!"

Twenty minutes later, we were standing in the sterile, brightly lit corridor of the St. Jude Private Maternity Wing.

Sophie had been wheeled behind the double doors of the trauma evaluation suite, her muffled groans echoing down the hallway. Nathan paced back and forth, loosening his tie with trembling hands, his face pale with raw anxiety.

The double doors swung open, and the attending OB-GYN stepped out, holding a digital tablet.

"Mr. Cole?" the doctor called out, his expression grave. "Her vitals are unstable, and the fetal Doppler is showing signs of acute placental insufficiency. We also found markers that can be associated with inherited clotting disorders affecting placental blood flow."

"Is the baby safe?" Nathan demanded, stepping forward and grabbing the doctor's arm. "Fix it. Do whatever you have to do."

"We need the biological mother's complete family medical history immediately," the doctor explained rapidly. "Does she have a documented history of factor V Leiden mutations, autoimmune anti-phospholipid syndrome, or reproductive vascular complications?"

Eleanor stepped forward, flustered. "Sophie has always had mild anemia, but nothing like—"

"Don't look at Sophie's records!" Nathan snapped, losing all control in the panic of the moment. "Her family history doesn't matter!"

The doctor paused, frowning in utter confusion. "What do you mean? Sophie is listed as the biological mother."

"Use Claire’s medical history!" Nathan shouted into the quiet corridor. "The embryo is hers!"

The entire hallway went dead silent.

The doctor froze, his pen hovering above the screen.

Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she stared at her son in absolute shock.

Nathan realized what he had just said. His breath caught in his throat, his posture stiffening as the color drained completely from his face. He slowly turned his head to look at me.

I stood five feet away under the stark fluorescent lights, perfectly still.

The final piece of the puzzle fell into place.

Nathan hadn't just used an anonymous surrogate program. He hadn't been tricked by Sophie. He had known from the very second the catheter entered her body that he was stealing my child, my flesh, and my blood to hand to another woman.

"Mr. Cole..." the doctor began, clearing his throat uneasily. "Are you saying this is a gestational surrogacy?"

"Yes," Nathan choked out, his voice hoarse, his eyes glued to mine. "I have Claire’s 2019 thrombophilia panel in my secure files. Just save the boy."

The doctor nodded quickly and vanished back into the trauma room.

Nathan took a frantic step toward me, his hands outstretched. "Claire... wait. Listen to me. That didn't come out right. It’s not what you think—"

He reached out, his fingers trying to wrap around my forearm, trying to pull me toward him to soothe the damage.

I brought my hand down hard, smacking his arm away with a sharp crack that echoed off the linoleum floor.

"Don’t touch me," I said.

My voice wasn't loud. It wasn't shaking. It was cold, flat, and absolute.

Nathan flinched as if I had struck his face. "Claire, please. Let me explain why I had to do it. After Sophie delivers, we can raise him together—"

I didn't stay to hear the rest of his lies.

I turned on my heel and walked down the long, empty corridor toward the elevators. I didn't go home to the penthouse. I didn't pack a suitcase or shed a single tear.

As the elevator doors closed, cutting off the sound of Nathan calling my name, I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed the private direct line for Donald Briggs, the founding chairman of the Cole Group’s oversight committee.

The line rang twice before a deep, gravelly voice answered.

"Claire? It's past nine at night. What's going on?"

"Chairman Briggs," I said, my tone razor-sharp. "Activate an emergency board audit on the corporate innovation fund. And freeze Nathan Cole’s executive access before he gets back to the office."
