His Mistress Took My Bedroom, So I Reclaimed the House Novel Cover

His Mistress Took My Bedroom, So I Reclaimed the House

Vanessa, Evan's mistress, claimed my bedroom because the guest suite felt beneath her. He demanded I hand over my wedding ring, serve her at his gala, and stay silent while she destroyed my mother's belongings. So I quit fighting for a place that was never mine—and began reclaiming the house in my name, the shares I funded, the marriage he thought I'd never abandon. Julian, Evan's half-brother and fiercest rival, becomes the one man ready to stand at my side. What neither Evan nor Vanessa suspect: much of his empire still answers to me.

Chapter 3

The Apex Solutions anniversary event filled the Grand Hotel ballroom with investors, executives, and reporters.

I had not planned to attend.

Then David Mercer, our vice president of operations, called me that morning and said the board wanted every founder present because Evan intended to announce a major restructuring.

Founder.

The word mattered more than I had admitted.

Vanessa found me near the bar ten minutes before the presentation.

She wore the forest-green dress Evan had chosen for her. My emerald ring glittered on her right hand beneath the ballroom lights. A gold badge on her lapel read BRAND DIRECTOR.

So that was the restructuring.

"I'm surprised you came," she said.

"I was invited."

She held out an empty champagne flute. "Since you're standing by the bar, would you grab me another? I have to present my budget in a few minutes."

I looked at the glass.

Evan appeared behind her. "Don't start, Nat."

"I haven't said anything."

"The board is watching. Please act professionally."

"You want me to serve your new brand director champagne."

"I want you not to make a scene."

I took the flute from Vanessa.

She smiled.

Then I handed it to a passing waiter.

"She'll have another," I said.

Her smile vanished.

Evan leaned close. "You always have to make things difficult."

"No. I just stopped making them easy."

The ballroom lights dimmed.

David walked onto the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, before we discuss where Apex is going, we need to remember how it started."

The fifty-foot screen behind him illuminated.

My photograph appeared first.

NATALIE REED GALLAGHER

FOUNDING INVESTOR AND EARLY CLIENT STRATEGY

A murmur swept the ballroom.

Evan stiffened.

Vanessa looked from the screen to him. "I thought she just funded the first round."

"Quiet," he muttered.

David continued.

"Seven years ago, Natalie provided the initial two-million-dollar seed investment that kept Apex operational through product development. She also secured our first three enterprise clients and negotiated the infrastructure contracts that allowed the company to scale."

I walked toward the front table.

Several older board members stood to greet me.

Evan did not.

I pulled out the chair reserved for the largest individual shareholder and sat.

David glanced at his tablet.

"Next, our new Brand Director, Vanessa Miller, will present a proposal for a five-hundred-thousand-dollar expansion of the Q3 marketing budget."

Vanessa walked to the podium.

Her confidence returned as soon as the microphone was in her hand.

"We want Apex to become more than a software company," she began. "We want it to become a lifestyle brand."

A few board members exchanged glances.

She clicked to a slide showing private villas, yacht dinners, and influencer campaigns.

"We will host luxury retreats for potential clients and strategic partners. The projected budget increase is five hundred thousand dollars."

I pressed the microphone button at my seat.

"No."

Vanessa stopped.

The room went silent.

She gave a nervous laugh. "I'm sorry?"

"The budget is denied."

Her smile tightened. "Evan approved it."

I turned toward him.

"Did you?"

He adjusted his cuffs. "The executive office reviewed it."

"That wasn't my question."

His mouth flattened.

Vanessa gripped the podium. "You can't just veto a strategy because you don't like me."

"I don't care enough about you to build a budget around you."

A few people coughed to hide laughter.

I continued.

"Apex sells enterprise software. Your proposal contains no customer-acquisition model, no conversion targets, and no return-on-investment analysis. It is five hundred thousand dollars of photographs."

Evan leaned toward his microphone. "This is a board matter."

"Correct."

I looked at the directors.

"All in favor of adding half a million dollars to marketing without a measurable sales plan?"

No hands went up.

Vanessa stared at the room.

David cleared his throat. "Motion fails."

She gathered her notes too quickly. Several pages slid onto the floor.

Evan looked furious enough to crack a tooth.

I stood.

"I have no interest in embarrassing the company," I told him quietly as I passed. "Stop using it to impress your girlfriend."

"She is not—"

"I no longer care what you call her."

I reached the exit.

A tall man in a dark suit stepped into my path.

Julian Gallagher.

Evan's older half-brother had the same dark hair and none of the same need to be admired. He ran Gallagher Dynamics, the competitor Evan blamed for every bad quarter.

Julian held two glasses of bourbon.

"I don't drink bourbon," I said.

"I remember."

He set both glasses on a tray.

"That was entertaining."

"It was governance."

"Even better."

I moved toward the doors.

He stepped aside, then held out a matte-black card.

No logo. Just his number.

"When you stop protecting my brother," he said, "call me."

"I don't need help destroying Evan."

"I didn't say you did."

His gaze held mine for one second too long.

Then he walked away.

My phone vibrated before I reached the lobby.

Unknown number.

The message contained a photograph of a patient portal screen from Harbor Fertility Center.

My name appeared at the top.

NATALIE REED GALLAGHER.

Four cryopreserved embryos.

A new note had been added that morning.

CONSENT CHANGE REQUEST INITIATED BY E. GALLAGHER.

PATIENT SIGNATURE PENDING VERIFICATION.

My blood went cold.

A second message arrived.

Audio attachment.

I pressed play.

Evan's voice filled my ear.

"I don't care how you code it. I need the records to show I withdrew consent before the divorce filing becomes public."

A man's voice answered.

"Mr. Gallagher, you cannot authorize destruction or transfer without Ms. Gallagher's verified consent."

"Then find a way to make the file look closed until I can deal with her."

The recording ended.

I stood alone beneath the hotel chandelier, gripping the phone hard enough to hurt.

Evan had not stolen an embryo.

Not yet.

He was trying to erase the paper trail before I could protect them.

I forwarded the recording to my attorney.

Then I called Harbor Fertility Center myself.

"This is Natalie Reed Gallagher," I said when the administrator answered. "Freeze every instruction on my account. No destruction. No transfer. No access changes."

"Ms. Gallagher, we need to verify—"

"You will receive a court order within the hour."

Across the ballroom, Evan appeared in the doorway.

He saw my phone in my hand.

He knew.

For the first time that night, the smile left his face.
